Jeans - end of my tether

I cannot seem to find jeans that fit me properly at all. I am 5'8 and have a 30 inch waist, 45 inch hip and thick legs.

I prefer high waisted as low rise give me a builders bum. Problem is they all have a huge gap around the waist if they fit my bum and thighs - i mean seriously big enough to put a 3 month old baby in with room to spare. Even if i size down and buy stretchy. Even with a belt, there is SO much excess fabric that bunches up especially in the fupa area, and looks awful and is uncomfortable.

I wear skinny style as sensory-wise, looser fabrics flapping about irritates me, I only wear form fitting clothes.

I have spent hundreds on jeans in the past, mainly ordering online now as all the mainstream shops i struggle to find high waist long leg skinny in stock without rips. they arent in fashion these days I suppose.

I am not so flush for cash and could really do with spending £80-100 on 3 pairs of decent jeans (black, navy, light) and calling it a day.

I have worked hard to lose weight and feel good in my body and not being able to find jeans or trousers in general that fit is making me feel like shit to be honest.

Has anyone been in my situation and found decent jeans that fit well?

Is it not obvious that you need to buy the size to fit your largest measurement, and then have them altered to fit the rest of your body?

Sorry if that’s too blunt! But mass produced clothes are never going to work for every shape. The only way to get a satisfactory fit if you’re outside a very basic standard model is to find a good alterations service and be prepared to take everything that needs it to them.

It is extra expense, of course. But way less frustrating than being made to feel like shit by your wardrobe, surely?

Skinny jeans are the worst for this problem ime. I had a friend who would get hers tailored at the back of the waist. I now prefer a straight or mom jeans as they naturally have more room in the bum/thigh - they are quite close fitting on a bigger leg and don’t ‘flap’. I particularly like new look Hannah or M&S mom high waisted.

You won’t get three pairs of decent jeans for £80 . I would buy one pair of Levi’s and take them in at waist

Nicecatneighbour · 09/02/2026 11:23

I struggled with jeans too. They always gape on me. To save my sanity I ended up with jeggings from next. More comfortable, and with a bit of stretch.

Have you tried buying from a curve range? Lots of brands (particularly American brands) do them. Some UK brands use curve to mean plus sizes but often in jeans it means that the waist is in smaller proportion to the hips. The idea being that they don't gape on hourglass figures. Levis have a range but I'd suggest having a look at Abercrombie and Fitch because they are great for leg lengths.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/02/2026 11:54

I think you need a good seamstress or tailor.

I was going to suggest trying barrel leg styles until you said you only wear form fitting clothes. Denim jeggings is a good suggestion.

edit for typos

I agree with the curve range. Also get one pair which is expensive the others you could get from F&F at Tesco, Tu Sainsburys, Primark, new look, Matalan, river island etc. don’t discount asos too, they have loads of styles.

InconvenientlyMaterial · 09/02/2026 12:50

You could try Lucy and Yak Addison jeans. They're ideal for hourglass and pear shapes.

They have a very fitted, very high waist (measured in inches so you'd take size 30 -although there's a bit of inconsistency between colours sometimes). The hips are very generous, as are the thighs. The legs are a little tapered so roll up nicely. It's quite a retro shape I guess.

I don't think you'd find the size 30 very baggy although they're not tight. If you search for pictures of them being worn, you have to bear in mind they're always fitted to the waist size. So the style looks much more fitted on your shape than it does on a person with a proportionally larger waist measurement. They look baggier on straight up and down shapes, regardless of actual body size.

Ohthatsabitshit · 09/02/2026 12:53

As others have said, buy for your hips and get the waist taken in. I do this for all my “adult” children and it’s fairly straightforward.

I've heard good things about the Abercrombie Curve jeans.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/02/2026 13:20

Where are you going to get three pairs for £80?!

Levis for a pair that fits.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/02/2026 13:25

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I did think about tailoring but most of those in my area bafflingly won't have me come in and they do the measurements themselves. They want me to do them and post them in, which I'm nervous to get wrong and pay £££ and ruin a good pair of jeans (and would have to be quality jeans rather than supermarket to withstand the level of altering).
Hence why I was hoping to find some online that i could buy at not too expensive a price, find a discount code and maybe find them second hand on vinted.
I am going to start by taking a look at Levi's (never been in the store as too ££ for my budget but we have one locally) see what fits and then try and find on Vinted.

@freakinthespreadsheets
Have a look at Next hourglass fit jeans. They have a smaller waist vs hip compared to standard fit jeans. Not too pricy either.

Dd has a small waist and big bum. She loves Abercrombie and Fitch Curve jeans.

soupyspoon · 09/02/2026 15:04

Cant you just get them to fit your hips and then wear a belt?

Also I noticed on the Pottery Throwdown there is a girl on there who has quite a slim waist but large hips, she was wearing jeans and I clocked it because I thought those jeans look very well fitted and wondered where she got them from.

whattheysay · 09/02/2026 15:24

I saw on Instagram ambela jeans have a thing at the back of the waist which pulls the waist in, this type would be good for you although I don’t know how far they pull in

Eucatastrophilia · 09/02/2026 15:36

So find different tailors … 🤷‍♀️

(Honestly a good one is worth gazillions.)
