Help - uniqlo puffer coat washing issue!

Wonderbug81 · 07/02/2026 16:03

I put my puffer coat in the wash. I don't have a bath, just a shower so it's tricky to hand wash something so big. My last Uniqlo coat was fine to handwash so I didn't see the label on this new one that says not to soak the coat in the washing machine etc.

I put it on delicate wash and very low spin (400) but when I opened the washer there's still a fair bit of soap sud. Now rinsing it again on 600 spin but still seems to be soapy.

Do I just rinse again?

I know its a bit late but ive killed several puffas by washing them so I just do spot cleaning now.

OhDear111 · 07/02/2026 16:11

Or dry clean if allowed. Machine wash? Never.

SoScarletItWas · 07/02/2026 16:14

Well, it’s wet now so no harm giving it a good rinse.

I guess the issue will be the down ‘puffing’ inside will now be saturated and flattened.

Do up the zip all the way. Fasten the cuffs closed eg with hair tie bobbles. Dry from the inside with your hairdryer on a low heat.

That will help dry and redistribute the filling.

Keep shaking and fluffing as you go.

Thank you. I did zip and wash inside out so hopefully the second rinse will sort. My old coat was identifical and was fine but this one must have a different filling.

Thank you. Lesson learned. Old coat always washed fine but filling must be different.

Hope it survives, @Wonderbug81. My suggestion was for drying it rather than washing it. Good luck!

Yes sorry I understood was just saying hopefully it survives this wash first.

To puff it back up, try taking to a laundrette and drying with a tennis ball in the drum. Worked for a North Face jacket that I thought I’d ruined.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/02/2026 16:36

Did you use a technical down wash, or ordinary laundry detergent?

Never even heard of that which tells you all you need. Used a delicates mild detergent. I used to use Fairy pods on the old coat in the washer and it was totally fine.

Some detergents can strip down of its natural oils, which stop it lofting (fluffing up) as much as it should, and might become brittle and break down.

Soap flakes, or specialist tech wash products (NikWax make them) are gentler.

I have had this issue with a down coat. The feathers seems to trap suds and then there are weird soapy marks left. I would put it on a rinse and spin again (fast spin) to get rid of any soap that's left. Don't use any detergent.

Tennis balls in the machine is what I’ve heard I’ve not washed mine just sponged it over.

mathanxiety · 07/02/2026 17:53

You should take it to a laundrette, wash a couple of times with no detergent, and put it in a big dryer with three tennis balls.

Puffer coats need tennis balls to be machine washed and dried, whether the filling is down or polyester.

The tennis balls go in the dryer.

I wash my uniglo jackets all the time.
The down clumps so I let them dry them sit and pull it apart and move it around
Then wear them for a few hrs and if all settled down fine

Sofachick6 · 07/02/2026 17:59

i have similar drying issues with North Face, I low tumble try and take out a few times to help puff up. It all works out in the end .

HostaCentral · 07/02/2026 18:00

I always get my down coats professionally washed. Just like duvets.

Gosh some of you WASH your puffer coats? I have two - one shortish, one long. One charcoal grey, the other black. Honestly I have them three or four years now and I just wipe them over with a baby wipe, collars cuffs and pockets given special attention! The odd time put oxy stain remover spray on the wipe if there's anything stubborn there. They look and smell absolutely fine. I'm never washing them now especially after reading this thread!

Thank you. My old coat was also Uniqlo (like this one) and I washed it all the time. Assumed this would be fine too. Hopefully once it's dry it will be OK again.

I was out on a muddy (cold) football pitch and ended up with mud on it. But yes I have washed my puffer coats without issue so far.

I washed my Uniqlo puffer on a delicates wash and then chucked it in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls -it came out fine.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 07/02/2026 20:35

once you’ve got the suds out, tumble dry with a couple of tennis balls, until well past when you think it’s dry, to get the feathers puffed up again.

I have a Uniqlo puffy and we also have a few Patagonia down jackets, this is the treatment they all get and all seem fine.

I wash my down filled coat several times every winter.

Three tennis balls in the dryer and it comes out nicely puffed every time.
