After being with the sane salon for years ice changed because I get my hair coloured abd the salon used loreal which is very harsh and the salon doesn't test every 6 months which I read online is illegal. I've now found a new salon and they use kevin murphy dye which is ammonia free. I dont get why my old salon said its not necessary to test every 6 months and continue to use a harsh dye

L'Oreal is one of the best professional hair colour bands so I guess that's why they still use it.

The salon requirement as I understand it is to do a patch test behind the ear a minimum of 48 hours before dyeing, IF it’s a new dye to them or to you. I’ve not heard of every 6 months but surely they could just give you a patch test every 6 months to put your mind at rest.

I have very fine hair and I found the L’Oréal colours were a bit harsh & drying for me, I can’t complain about the colour result from it that was fantastic, but since switching salons who use Milkshake dyes, it’s really helped with the condition.

salons should perform a patch test every 6 months as a standard safety precaution to identify potential allergies to hair color, tints, or products.

I have been having my grey hair dyed for about five years and haven’t had a patch test since I started. I’ve never heard of people testing every six months, and would find that a huge inconvenience.

Well the Internet says hairdressers should test every 6 months, and 3 salons I contacted also said the sane There must be some truth in it you can react to something after being fine for years I am now alergic to gold plated jewellery. I never used to be so I now only wear gold or silver otherwise my skin itches.

I would be happy to have a patch test regularly

So ask for a patch test more often if you’re so worried. I’m not honestly sure of the point of this thread, you weren’t happy with your hairdresser, you changed hairdresser, now you’re happy. Great. Get on with it then!

BauhausOfEliott · 07/02/2026 11:03

OK. You’ve changed hairdressers now, though, so what’s your issue?

BauhausOfEliott · 07/02/2026 11:04

Oh, wait, I’ve just realised what poster this is…

But having your hair coloured is a patch test of sorts? I’m assuming you have your hair coloured more than every 6 months? If you don’t react when they dye your hair then you don’t need another patch test unless it’s been longer than the recommended gap between tests

Screamingabdabz · 07/02/2026 16:43

Actually having your hair coloured is the ultimate ‘patch test’ so if you’re having that done every few months without issue there is no need to test.
