The Naughty Corner – Influencing, Alternatives & Things That Actually Worked

Whowhatwerewolf · 04/02/2026 09:04

This thread is the naughty corner offshoot of the de-influencing thread.

If you:

  • want to suggest cheaper or better alternatives
  • bought the thing and were glad you did
  • want to talk about products that genuinely worked
  • feel the urge to say something positive about an item being discussed elsewhere

…this is the place for it.

The original de-influencing thread is deliberately for talking people out of buying things. This one exists so those conversations don’t drift into recommendations and shopping there.

So please:

  • post alternatives and “this was actually good” comments here
  • use this thread if you want influencing rather than de-influencing
  • consider this a pressure-release valve for good buys and success stories

That way we get two useful threads instead of one muddled one.

Welcome to the naughty corner. I'm going to try to stay out of here if I can because I'm trying to reduce my spending, but if you're naughty and you know it please crack on.

The original de-influencing thread is here https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/style_and_beauty/5482885-de-influencing-thread-reasons-why-not-to-buy-things

I love the suggestion ❤️
I wear boots in winter and sometimes cardigans (you can actually see my daily outfits in the shopping my wardrobe thread) but I equally often wear compression socks under my trousers so you have an opportunity to admire them when I try something on.

You're probably missing out on an OnlyFans compression sock- & Celine skirt-wearing (very) niche audience - you could make a fortune!!! 😁

Someone in the main thread has been looking at a cotton collarless quilted jacket and another poster mentioned a TU one. Here's the TU one which gets good reviews and is on sale. Polyester, though 😭

Thanks @Whowhatwerewolf
That is a pretty good dupe. It’s the old cotton versus polyester thing though, I tend to favour natural fabrics. £29 v £85 though

Hi, can you confirm tbis would be a good buy:
https://www.celticandco.com/product/waxed-cotton-utility-jacket?cat=2140&colour=59&type=1

  1. i havent got a jacket and i need one (i have one coat and two blazers)
  2. price is ok
  3. i used to have a barbour wax coat and loved it
  4. I have lots and celtic &co stuff and im happy with the quality
  5. i look a little bit like the model, blonde-ish, fair skin, slim-ish (but 50yo, and less pretty and a size 12)
  6. i dont like the belt and i could either remove it or tie it at the back
  7. i do have the money(just about)

is it a yes? Or a yes? (Happy to consider alternatives in the same (discounted) price range) thanks in advance

This H&M cardigan:
https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1305448003.html

Yes, thank you I can read: It's polyester, acrylic, 5% wool (what's the point of 5%?) and it'll look like a dishcloth after a couple of washes. I still love it so nerr.

I think it was mainly the slightly large but not cartoonish collar that sold it to me but I even like the short sleeves cos it fits under a jacket without bulk. My only dilemma is whether to buy a second so I'll have a spare when it turns to rags - it kind of feels like rewarding shoddy work, but I might.

Oh and I like brown too.

I think wool is so magical that there is a point to that 5%! One of my fave jumpers (can't link as it's about 10 years old) has almost identical composition to yours, also H&M, was £5 in a sale and still going strong! It's a different knit though - almost like a crochet, can see through it slightly? But I'm convinced that wool content does something positive as it's really warm and doesn't smell after one wear like lots of synthetic knitwear.

I wouldn’t buy anything at this stage of the winter. I personally would hang on to the money at this point, stash it away and add to it between now and September/October then buy another Barbour. If you loved the real thing you’ll never be happy with a knock off. And the one you’ve linked is too short.

I’ve had a stackers set for a few years and they’re great for organising your jewellery. The only thing I’d say is you need to be very gentle with it as the top layer of mine (with the lid) is looking slightly tatty, and I certainly haven’t abused it!

I’ve had stackers for about 20+ years and yes It’s great but I agree that you need to be careful with it. I’ve look after mine really well and it’s starting to look a bit tatty (though that’s not bad for a quarter of a century I guess!)

I just enabled myself!

one of my acquaintances is an actual influencer, and her post today included the VBxMango trench from a couple of years ago. It’s gorgeous! Trenches are very this season! I wanted it!

And then I found one at a bargain price on Vinted. £80! So I leapt on it. And now it’s mine!

This is not my usual thing. I’m not a fashionista! But it’s just lovely and I can’t wait to wear it!

TragicMuse · 03/04/2026 11:42

Oh lawks, I’ve done it again! Lipstick this time!

An insta historian I follow - Dr Kate Lister - always has an amazing lipstick game and is currently searching for a new one. And an American brand sent her their WHOLE range! It is immovable! It looks fantastic! I have bought some!

It’s going to take weeks to get here!

I am ridiculous. I can’t wait!

All right spill. What is this wondrous indescribable lipstick? I need it.

It’s called Lip Ink! There’s high postage from the US, but I found a code which gave me 35% and a free gift so that balanced the postage. SPRING35
