I’m looking for a face serum for daily use. I am in my late 50s with good skin but some sun damage. I have inherited good skin but want to keep it that way. I have no idea where to start! I moisturise daily with liz Arden, this has and SpF in it and I’m not looking to change my moisturiser. Please help!!

Mornings I use a vit c serum or a hylauronic serum
evenings I would suggest a peptide serum after some retinal

This is a good serum. It’s mild enough to use daily in my experience - https://www.boots.com/caudalie-vinoperfect-brightening-dark-spot-serum-30ml-10342457?srsltid=AfmBOoqmspY7rtlx5-yLxslUB9R-PmCjMHgd9K6XsEoMYy9QbU2XFDUX

Or you could try a vitamin C serum as your moisturiser already has sunscreen in it - Medik8 make good ones.

No 7 Future Renew serum is excellent, but I would have a good think about your moisturiser. Unless you use an absolute ton of it, it’s very unlikely you’ll be getting enough spf from it.

You’d be better off with a good serum, followed by a moisturising spf.

Have a watch of Nadine Baggot on instagram or YouTube. She offers very good advice on routines and is a huge advocate of not spending lots of money on products.

Thanks all. Am looking at the suggestions. Bit shocked at the cost!!

I'd look carefully at the evidence base for them. Many have a hefty price tag for ingredients that won't make a long term impact.

What does have evidence behind it is a high percentage vit c serum in the AM and a retinoid in the night. Different companies like skin & me and dermatica offer prescription tretinoin, or you can start with medik8 retinol and work your way up the strengths.

Lostsadandconfused · 04/02/2026 03:05

If you only want one serum and are concerned about sun damage, Vitamin C in the morning. I assume you’re already using a retinol at night?

And use a dedicated sunscreen if you already have sun damage. SPF50+

CherryPie21 · 04/02/2026 04:28

The best thing you can do for sun damage is proper suncream. The amount of sunscreen in moisturiser is minuscule and you would need to apply half a tube to get enough SPF on the skin to actually give it protection. So before any serums, get a dedicated SPF!

Ok. Can you recommend a high percentage vit c cream?

I have had good results with the Garnier vit c range. I stopped using the serum to try 2 other ones and have seen a decline so will be going back to it. I use the moisturiser after the serum and the face wash in the shower. https://www.boots.com/garnier-3-5-percent-vitamin-c-niacinamide-salicylic-acid-brightening-and-anti-dark-spot-serum-30ml-10305123

Active ingredients is where you should spend a little bit more. Skinceuticals CE Ferulic is the original holy grail vitamin c. It is very expensive though. Geek and Gorgeous do a very good copy and can be bought on Amazon or in Superdrug.

For a Vitamin C to be effective, it needs to be between 10 and 20 %. Most things you find on the shelves in boots will be less than 10% and not really worth the effort.

Gatekeeper · 04/02/2026 14:43

This vit C one was recommended on here several months ago and I chanced it. It has made a massive difference to the look/texture and feel of my skin. Just started my 2nd bottle and would definitely recommend

I follow a pharmacist online who recommends products based on the ingredients. She's highlighted several very expensive products that really aren't worth the money when you drill down to what's in them. She recommends a good vitamin c serum in the mornings, and her best budget recommendation is the Inkey List 15% one. It's also got growth factors in it which are very good for the skin. Because of that you need to let it really sink in before you add any other products on top (just telling you this in case you're in a rush in the mornings!) Her spendy recommendation is the Medik8 one. I've been using the Inkey List one for about 6 months now and I really like it so I don't feel the need to spend any more money on one.

She also insists everyone needs a standalone SPF rather than one in a moisturiser. If you need it you can add a separate moisturiser over the vitamin C and then apply the SPF but unless you have very dry skin you shouldn't need to. For SPF I'd recommend the Beauty of Joseon one it doesn't irritate, sits well under makeup with no white cast and gives excellent factor 50 protection. I use tretinoin most nights so wouldn't dream of not wearing SPF50 each day.

At night I use a peptide serum, again the spendy recommendation is Medik8 but I use Geek & Gorgeous "power peptides" which has a decent ingredients list and is much more affordable!

bigchanges1 · 04/02/2026 18:22

This is so interesting.

I use medik8 vitamin c serum in the morning, cerave moisturiser & spf50.

Then in the evening twice per week Tretinoin from dermatica, the other 5 evenings cerave moisturiser with a small amount of almond oil on top.

Is the advice to use peptide serum in the evenings too? If so, on tret evenings or not as I use that alone usually?

Sweetiedarling7 · 04/02/2026 18:31

I have been using the Nivea Cellular Expert Filler Serum and really like it. Now at the end of my first bottle and my skin is definitely improved.
Cost about £20 but frequently found on half price offers.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 04/02/2026 18:32

If I have time I'll put the peptides serum on, leave it to do its thing for half an hour or so and then use the tret. Again if I have time I'll add a moisturiser on top about half an hour after that but mostly I just stop at the tret. Once or twice I week I skip the tret altogether and use a richer moisturiser to give my skin a boost.

FuzzyPuffling · 04/02/2026 18:34

Lidl do a Vit C serum which i really like. It's about £3 a bottle.
