Elopement, what to wear?

I’m eloping in April, just to a local registry office with my partner of a decade. Probably going to bring my teenagers as witnesses. All very low key, will probably go for a nice lunch after but that’s it.
I do want to wear something at least vaguely nice, definitely not a full on wedding dress but something I can look nice in pictures. I have no idea where to start. I don’t want to spend more than a couple hundred max. I’m late 30s, average height, slim but a bit of a mum tum to hide and I’ve broad shoulders so some styles won’t work on me.
Would love any suggestions or anecdotes!
Thanks!

We all know what the OP means - the word is definitely now used for minimal-fuss, just two witnesses, registry affairs (whether you like it or not).

Yes indeed, but unfortunately it also means the loss of a word that signifies a real elopement.
How should we describe a marriage where two people have to marry in extreme secrecy due to familial or societal disapprobation?
'we had to elope to get married.'
''Sounds great -- did you have a proper old knees up in the pub after? "
Errr...

OP could have gone for, stallion, sugarplum, honeywump, pumpkinmuffin…
Now those are genuinely awful! But partner?

I think it is time for us to bring back golden oldies like "swain" or "paramour."

As long as it isn’t swine… not quite as loving 😂

I hope you have a lovely day and admire you for having a simple ceremony. The two couples I have known who had small weddings like you are still together over 30 years later. So I hope like you a good omen.

Oh and I like what you have chosen.

I got a lovely pale pink Ghost dress which have fabulous tailored cuts and quality material. Hehe I didn’t buy it from there though I got it at TK maxx for £30. I did get a veil and elbow length gloves off Amazon because cba getting my nails done and made my own bouquet. I’m only planning on getting married once and I it’s not often you get to proper dress up, so I took the opportunity!

Both lovely. LOVE the second one, that’s right up my street! Thank you for the suggestions, never thought of Monsoon.

That dress is so elegant and would be very flattering. Also perfect for April and maybe a nice meal afterwards with your family.

CompetitionMyArse · 06/02/2026 14:03

I usually love a 'help me find a wedding dress' thread but on the basis that you are calling this an elopement when it's not, I refuse to join in. 😂

It's one of my pet peeves. I find it intensely annoying.

UnemployedNotRetired · 06/02/2026 17:00

Check your teenage kids are old enough to be witnesses! Think it's 16 in England but 18 in Scotland.

This has been covered several times. It's 16 in Scotland - you can still get married in Scotland at 16.

Some English registrars will accept 16, some say 18.

I bought my wedding dress in TK Maxx for £20, you'd never have known.

I wore this Coast one to my local registry office wedding in Sept 25. Just me, him and the 2 kids. They are only 4 and 6 so we had to invite a workmate and his partner to sign for us. Then went and told family.

Call it an elopement, call it whatever u want. Some people on this site just wake up in the morning with a twisted look on their face, looking to spoil others people's day. Must be a terrible way to have to live but don't let it put a dampener on your excitement!!!

That’s so lovely!

FriendsinNameonly · 06/02/2026 20:40

Wear something that makes you feel fabulous, whatever that might be. I got married in dark blue, because that's my colour.

Christ almighty I know what a “proper” elopement is 😂 it was just an easy word to convey the tone of the day.

@Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink yeah it’s good advice. I looked at some lovely vintage Laura Ashley dresses and did consider something non-bridal but like you I think I’d regret it. It may be a low key affair but I’d like a dress I can keep and look back on, I don’t think something non-bridal will be the same.

I did think you were very young and off to Gretna Green!

Basically it's a small wedding, where you've not told anyone else, with no guests other than your children.

Have fun!

Tootiredcantsleep · 07/02/2026 00:27

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/02/2026 11:57

I feel the best outfit for a 'proper' elopement is camouflage clothing and a balaclava (the ones with two eye holes).

This maybe, but when a cape obviously!

I would second TH&TH, I have a civil ceremony before my French wedding and I have gone for the Cecelia dress, I cannot tell you how stunning it is for the price. Really really great quality I actually considered using it for my main wedding but I had already bought my main dress. I ordered a few options and the Camilla is gorgeous also. They have lots of ivory options that could work for elopement. https://thandth.com/collections/ivory

@user593 just got it for £170 in the sale with the code as well. Haven’t stopped thinking about it so will see if it lives up in real life!

im aware its not a “real” elopement but its a wedding that’s tiny and secret from everyone. Im not telling my kids til just before and not telling anyone else til after. Both teenagers are over 16 so fine to witness where we are.

thank you all for the advice and suggestions!

Have an amazing time 💖 bit late to the party sorry but I did the same nearly two years ago. We got married on a remote beach on the west of Scotland, miles from anywhere. Just us, our 4 teens and the dog. It was incredible. You'll have a wonderful time, enjoy x ps my dress was from Coast, they do some lovely stuff that's weddingy enough but not the full shebang IYKWIM

Ooh, that sounds lovely! Which beach?
We are trying to find a suitable spot for later this year. 2 teens - I hadn’t thought to include the dog!
