What do others wear?, I've lost weight tbh I was 22 but wearing a 20 looking for new ideas im 14 to 16 now, I have shirt dresses but what else could I try? I'm an hourglass and normally use vinted but finding it harder now to find my size or even what I should be looking for, please help

I’m the same size. 36D with small waist but carry weight disproportionately on my lower stomach and hips. 5’7. For me:

Wide leg, high waist trousers to help balance silhouette- skin tight jeans/jeggings not our friend at size 14/16

Tie waist midi dresses - there are lots out at the moment where the “tie” is only a couple of tongues of material at the front, (so not a cord all the way around) that are very flattering if you have a small waist (the ties often also obscure lower tummy)

bias cut midi skirts are a god send for skimming my stomach. I wear with chunky jumpers in winter. T shirts in summer.

Three quarter or longer sleeves I find more flattering. Thin strapped vest tops not very good on me. Long bell sleeves sleeves look great I think- esp if you’re curvy, as again help add some balance to the silhouette

DaphneduM · 03/02/2026 10:52

Wide leg or barrel shape high rise jeans. Wide leg silk or linen trousers for the summer. Boxy or slim tops to the waist or tucked in - this gives you shape. Shirt dresses with a belt at the waist. Also longsleeved shirts to tuck in. Short blazers and jackets. Short knitwear to the waist or tucked in. I wear silk blouses with jeans a lot in the summer and usually add a toning leather belt for definition at the waist.

Fashion is your friend right now as wide or barrel legs are really flattering. Clever layering on top really helps too - I’ll wear a relatively slim fitting jumper for example, but with a white tee just visible at the bottom.

look Flattering especially on curves

I’m not sure I agree that current fashion is friendly to hourglass figures. Maybe with tweaks, but not big wide legged jeans and short boxy tops. The entire silhouette works against a curvy hourglass. Perhaps a bootcut jean and more fitted polo style top?

Tight fitted stuff if best for hourglass figure in my opinion

Overtheatlantic · 03/02/2026 11:46

Yes, otherwise you run the risk of looking frumpy and larger than you are.

OffToSeaInABlizzard · 03/02/2026 11:47

Surely the whole point of losing weight (from plus size to not) is that you can now choose to follow the whims of fashion, rather than simply buying what fits?

Why not have some fun experimenting with everything that appeals to you, rather than encouraging posters to hem you in with a set of rules?

Don’t just look on Vinted. You need to know what’s current and being sold in shops, so you have a good idea of what to search for pre-owned.

Shirt dresses are quite neutral so don’t tell us much about your style, or your wardrobe requirements. What do you need to dress for on normal days? And with your new freedom to choose, what sort of impression do you want to convey with your clothes?

I would like to work with my curves, I wear uniform at work so need to decide what I would wear for going out for a coffee, at home, or meal out, I'm going abroad, Greece in the summer so need to decide good shapes for this going in June

Wide leg are good but not in jeans they swamp me I can go to m and s and try on barrel leg but they don't appeal when I've seen them

I’m a 12-14 and I like midi dresses, belted, vintage (Mandy Marsh), not that keen on shirt dresses to be honest.

I also like fitted or semi fitted pencil/knee length skirts, worn with either a fitted top or knitted top/cardigan.

Currently wearing barrel jeans (Tu Sainsbury’s), fitted black jumper with exposed zip at back neck (Zara) and black, white and gold stripy cardigan (Oliver Bonas). Last night when out at a concert I wore the same outfit but with an All Saints black cat (Tiger?) t shirt.

gototogo · 03/02/2026 14:12

I wear a 16 and find barrel leg really unflattering, I personally prefer a straight leg trouser/jean and things that are more shaped as straight down makes you look bigger

wishingonastar101 · 03/02/2026 14:20

I dress from shoes up... pick your perfect footwear and work up! Finishing with earrings.

winnieanddaisy · 03/02/2026 14:31

I’m 72 and have gone from a size 22 to a fourteen . I have 36c bust , a flabby belly and no hips with skinny legs . I look terrible in any baggy trousers . I also can’t wear bias cut skirts or dresses because of my lack of hips . I find boot cut or slim leg jeans and trousers look best on me . Practically any tops are ok for me . When I wore a pair of baggy trousers my son was skitting me saying I looked like the man out of the tv program The Office 😂. Cheeky sod . I’ve not worn the offending article since .

Vintage styles are good for curves.

Any kind of dress with a belt. Fit and flare dresses are particularly good with tights and chunky boots / shoes.

Skorts with tights and boots with fitted tops

Jeans have never suited me cause all my weight is on my hips and thighs.

Wide leg pants are ok as long as the top you wear is tight.

I like tights from Snag as they have loads of cool styles.

I know this has been mentioned on here before but Kibbe body typing my body has made a massive difference to how I view the clothes I have in my wardrobe and knowing now what works and why it works for me. Even down to why a certain shirt style doesn't suit me but another one does.

This is a great starter video on it and she also covers things like what jeans are best for your body shape but also says don't be a slave to it and consider the outfit you are wearing. I think seeing the different body shapes she is referring to helped me understand it all. I am double curve, my shoulders are as wide as the drawing in proportion to my body at around 7 minutes in but definitely watch it all and then decide what you are. She does recommend taking a photo of yourself so you can draw lines on the image but I just stood in front of a full length mirror and compared where my shoulders were to my hips in width etc.

Once I figured out what I am (romantic, which is hourglass and fleshy) someone has timestamped the videos in the comments so you can pick your shape easily from Aly's videos. It is a little time consuming but it means now I know what I am looking for when buying clothes. I hope this helps.

I agree, wide leg/barrel style can make you look heavy.
I am petite, 5ft and large chested, i have excess stomach weight after 3 csections. I prefer jeggings and then a baggier top or shirt. I also recommend cycling shorts in summer!

ReadingCrimeFiction · 03/02/2026 17:13

I think if you've lost that much weight (brilliant work by the nway!), you need to be wondering into actual shops and trying on anything and everything that vaguelly appeals to you - without stopping to think "will this suit me?" Because you have no idea! And then see what does work and what doesn't. You don't have to buy necessarily, but it gives you a sense of what you like NOW and what suits you NOW.

I'd be taking a day at your local large shopping centre/town and really just get busy trying on things!

Julimia · 03/02/2026 19:05

Wear whatever you fancy. In the right size of course!
