First of all, you have to take care of your skin. There is lots of info out there about the ingredients that actually work, especially retinol/tretinoin. But the basics are a cleanser, a moisturiser and an spf that suit you.
I use a Superdrug cleansing balm or Cerave cleanser, with a clean flannel daily. For moisturiser, a very plain lotion from Face Facts (v cheap) or Cerave in a tub. For spf, Hello Sunday or La Roche Posay Anthelios. I avoid fragranced products where possible.
I do have other products but these are the basics.
You need some kind of gentle exfoliation, from something like glycolic acid. I also
dermaplane (shave) my face as it’s getting fluffier and this provides exfoliation and a nice canvas for makeup. Be careful not to overdo it and damage your skin barrier.
I find it beneficial to do an old-fashioned clay mask now and again, which seems to give my pores a clear out. This may help with skin texture too.
Makeup wise, the basics are concealer, foundation or tinted moisturiser or BB/CC cream. I like Loreal True Match for foundation and concealer. I apply very lightly only where needed with a kabuki type brush. The main areas that need a little coverage tend to be nose and chin area.
It’s helpful to have an understanding of colour correction. I use a Pixi undereye colour corrector not to cover dark circles but to just neutralise the colour a little. Incidentally the best thing I’ve found for my dark circles is regular aerobic exercise.
I use a blusher or lipstick high on my cheekbones, temples and bridge of nose for very natural colour. Again I like Pixi for this. It helps to know your colour ‘season’ to ensure you choose a natural looking shade.
I have my eyebrows threaded now and again, and use gel on them to keep them in place. Mascara is the other essential. I do use powder sometimes (NARS, one of my few ££ choices) but setting spray is arguably more useful.
Everything else is extra imo, and you’ll discover what works for you and what you like using. I hate taking time on makeup and like looking natural so my routine is very simple.
I think the key things are to understand and take care of your skin (including diet and exercise), ensure your brows are brushed/groomed, and understand your colours. Individual products and brands are very subjective, so what one woman swears by can be useless for another.
I hope this helps! I’m 50 and menopausal by the way, so not posting from the perspective of dewy youth 😁
