Hot Brush

I am looking for something I can use on nearly dry hair to remove the need for straightening. Something that will just smooth out my hair and add a bit of volume.

I’ve seen loads of people recommend the Revlon one step but there seems to be a few variations. Are people generally talking about the all in one unit that doesn’t come with extra bits? Any other recommendations?

Amother option is something like a GHD Glide? I understand these are for dry hair

Are any of these options actually any better than using straighters? Of course I already do and will continue to use heat protector.

Thanks!

I picked up a basic One Step from TK Maxx, not expecting much, but it did a great job. I literally looked like I just stepped out of a salonnnn!k

I didnt even have to go over my hair with the GHDs afterwards, and I always have to do that when I straighten it with a hair dryer and round brush.

I have the Babyliss Big Hair. Love it. Rough dry to 90% then finish off with the babyliss. Takes a bit of practice to perfect the technique but once mastered it’s quick and easy and end result is like a bouncy blow!

Revlon One Step, it's great, makes my hair really smooth after I've blow dried it.

Try the Shark Smooth Style Hotbrush, it's been great and I am rubbish at doing my hair

I love a hotbrush! The type that don't use hot air, but are basically a paddle brush with a heated plate behind the bristles.

I had a Babyliss one for ages, but eventually it fell apart, so I replaced it with a Revamp one from Boots. It is excellent. This one

Perfect if you want to smooth your hair but don't want the poker-straight straightener look. You can also turn under your ends quite easily. I have shortish bobbed hair, but it is slightly greying, so prone to frizz.... I dry with a hairdryer then go over with a hotbrush to smooth. I do it in two layers, clipping up the top section and doing the underneath first.

I use the babyliss big hair on my chin length bob, like you I'm grey now and my hair has changed after Chemo.
The only worry I have is my hair going "yellow".
Obviously I use heat spray etc, but previously straighteners would make my hair yellowish.
Is the hot brush cooler than straighteners?

I have this Revamp hot brush, it’s excellent. Retractable bristles, adjustable heat, makes my hair look like it’s had a salon blow dry - it’better than the GHD one that l’ve also got. I use it everyday. My test generally is if it were broken would I buy it again, and this I definitely would, I’ll qualify that either way it is only £39.99!

The brush i have has a variable temperature setting, and it works fine on my hair on the lowest setting. The plate does get hot, but because your hair isnt "clamped" to it, it does seem kinder. It's very much designed to smooth rather than straighten, but that's what I'm after.

Thank you for all of these helpful replies! I actually had the Revlon one in the house already so gave it a try this morning. The results weren’t awful but weren’t great, I feel my hair still just looks like it’s been dried and then left. Maybe I’m just too use to the sleekness of straightening?

The ends at the front are the main issue and just want to kick out (not in a cute way!) so I bought some rollers and once I’ve used the one step I think I’ll stick those bits in rollers for a while to see if the shape keeps a bit better.

Hopefully my technique will improve over time too! I really can’t keep straightening it all the time.

In my experience a lot of the results depend on your hair texture if you have hair which is fine you'll get a good results from a hot brush but if you have coarse or frizz prone hair you need a lot of tension to remove the frizz. This can be done by a very skilled stylist manipulating your hair during a blow dry or by brute forcing it with straighteners but I have never been able to mimic the sleekness of straighteners even with my Dyson Airwrap. However, straighteners do a lot of damage which increases frizz in the long run so I only use my straighteners for special occasions (and I will straighten for sleekness before curling for a big event) and just live with some frizz the rest of the time.

I think it takes some time to get the technique right. I find that what I put on my hair before I begin makes a big difference (currently using colour wow money spray), it shouldn’t be very wet or too dry, then in sections I do each section for quite a while if I want it to look sleek. I have babyliss - I imagine the revlon is v similar - and my hair is so much better condition than when I used straighteners.

Iamthesecrettraitor · 05/02/2026 17:25

Hopefully as my hairs condition improves the look I’m achieving with the hot brush will improve too. It’s certainly no quicker than straightening!!
