Cotton Traders - for what age group?

I'm 39 and ended up buying a few tshirts and jumpers from Cotton Traders recently. Just basics in the sale, in colours that I know suit me.

Was commenting to a friend a few years younger than me and she seemed horrified, saying that's clothing for over 50s.

I'm not really into fashion or fancy brands and am quite practical about clothing. CT just seemed like a good choice for wardrobe basics for running errands or working from home.

Are they going to make me look like I'm in my 50s? Have I committed a terrible fashion faux pas?

Late 30s is hard with clothing. I can't really do the PLT and Fashion Nova stuff I was wearing 10 years ago so I just default to simple basic jeans and tshirts.

I've even heard it from medical professionals.

A couple of years ago, a male dentist in his 50s or early 60s called me into his room and said: I nearly didn't spot you - I was looking for a little old lady, not someone in jeans and boots. I was so thrown by his comment that all I could think to mutter was "I don't do 'little old lady'." I should have asked him what he thought 'little old ladies' look like.

Would he have commented on how a younger woman was dressed? Would he have commented on how a man in his 70s was dressed?

That's appalling. I would call out the medical professional on a remark like that. Unacceptable.

I used to order from Cotton Traders when I was in my mid 20s actually, but I don't bother so much now.

I did too but tbh my taste in clothes is better now in my 60s than it was then 😅

So much ageism 😮

I live in rural Norfolk. We have little Cotton Traders and Seasalt outlets in most garden centres. I buy the odd thing from them if I think it’s nice - I also shop on asos, h and m, Zara, all sorts. I’m 45. Norfolk is muddy, messy and we do a lot of walking outside through fields etc. CT and Seasalt etc cater to that, I’ve been buying stuff from them for years since we moved from London to Norfolk. A lot of it is down to where you live and what you do. When I lived in London and worked in an office I doubt I would have been buying a waterproof coat from CT or Seasalt to stand in the tube going to Liverpool Street!

Seasalt has some lovely clothes if you are picky. I have a gorgeous summer dress from there and a lovely electric blue skirt I wear a lot.
Yet other items have ghastly frumpy patterns. Same with CT. I just bought three cotton teashirts from them that are perfect for layering. I always wear a teashirt under my nice jumpers so they don't have to be washed as often.

I associate Seasalt with teachers in their 50s although I was one of them and I wouldn't have worn their stuff 😅

Music Video Wtf GIF

Come on now - teacherism 😂

We ger enough rain in London, believe me. I love my Seasalt Janelle coat and find it perfectly practical and stylish too. Same with one of the lighter waterproof jackets that I use in spring/summer. Tbh I have never been hung up on coats really - they get you from A to B and then you take them off anyway.

Cotton traders in the 90s had a concession in our local Debenhams- I brought stuff from there in my 20s! I think they are trying to appeal to a younger audience as they has that Alex Jones (off the one show)
modelling their jumpers. I will say the shops concessions are very different to the whole range they sell online. Much better and appealing online.

I read this thread over the weekend and was sadly not surprised at the ageism and snobbery.

But thanks to the thread and someone mentioning Seasalt I had a look on there and found a lovely v necked cotton cardigan, two cotton T-shirts and a pair of dark wide legged jeans. And spotted a nice rain jacket on Cotton Traders. Looked then at M&S, John Lewis, Uniqlo and H&M for one but didn’t see anything I liked so I think I’ll order the Cotton Traders one.

I’m 61 and just buy what I like and I seriously don’t care where my clothes come from. As long as I like them. I shop at a range of places. Although I have walked out of a couple of large H&Ms recently due to the smell. An overwhelming chemical smell which I assume is the cheap fabrics.
