Composite Bonding

Hi everyone, I'm thinking of making an appointment to discuss having composite bonding on my two front teeth which have discoloured. Would I be right in thinking that the procedure would make the teeth more bulky - noticeably bulkier than the adjoining ones?
If you've had this done, would you recommend it?

I have been provisionally quoted £300 per tooth but haven't been seen by any dentist as yet - I'm thinking this seems to be a standard and acceptable cost as long as my teeth won't look any different in size; only whiter.

I've had mine done. They weren't bigger or thicker and they looked great as I didn't go too white. The bottoms of mine felt a bit rounder as they were quite thin and brittle at the bottom.

I have this and it’s not bulky at all. Much cheaper than porcelain veneers and doesn’t involve any shaving of the teeth.

Thank you both, that's really helpful and encouraging. How long did it take from first appointment please?

Just had mine done. Paid £200 per tooth. Definitely doesn’t look bulkier. Took an hour to do both teeth.

FastFood · 30/01/2026 07:19

I had it, ir's brilliant.
I think the sensation of slightly bulkier teeth subsided after a couple days, and in my case, if I remember correctly, it was mostly the canines that felt bulkier, because they'd been totally reshaped after being eroded by years of bruxism. Now they look like canines.
Anyway, it's awesome, I'm very happy I went for that rather than veneers.

I booked an appointment specifically and they showed me a colour chart. Took about an hour. As pp above says they don't shave teeth down. It's sort of like the equivalent of painting your nails. If they get stained after a few years you can just get a clean or a top up.

I had a tiny big added to the bottom of my front two to reshape as they were brittle.

Well worth it. Brightens your look without any really obvious changes.

Wow, thank you all! I am going to ring a few surgeries and ask for an initial appointment - all excited now! I'm glad to hear such positive opinions.
£200 per tooth seems a good price so I shall shop around.

I have an appointment on Monday to discuss - thanks again all who posted.

If the teeth are discoloured then tooth whitening may be more appropriate.

Have the teeth been root filled or have they been filled a lot?

Starlightwarrior · 30/01/2026 17:53

I have the proper whitening kit provided by my dentist which has worked to some extent but want to take things a step further now.

I’m planning to get this done once I’ve finished my Invisalign treatment. Top 4 incisors (middle two are chipped from where my teeth used to touch when closed) and a tooth at the bottom that’s a funny shape from where it used to rub against another teeth.

Benefits for me vs veneers is that it’s not permanent (because your teeth have to be slightly filed down for veneers - although my dentist said this should be very minimal if done properly, not like ‘Turkey teeth’). Downside is that composites don’t last as long as veneers.

Dentist has promised me they will look better but still natural! I am going to do whitening first (included with the Invisalign).

if it’s just whitening of your own teeth you want then have you looked at Enlighten? They guarantee to get your teeth to a specific level of whitening. It’s on offer at my dentist which is how I know about it but I’ve never used and I don’t work for them I promise! I’d just be tempted if I had more money and the standard whitening wasn’t included with the Invisalign I’ve already paid for.

Blessedbethefruitloopss · 30/01/2026 18:20

They chip quite easily. After the first year 3/6 I had done were chopped. I’m just saying be prepared to have them done again.

Starlightwarrior · 30/01/2026 18:21

The Boutique whitening has been impressive but I don't want to have to keep using it regularly. Everything I've read so far has persuaded me to go ahead. I appreciate all input though :)

My upper front teeth were done after I had Invisalign 5 years ago. No visible difference to my other teeth and they don’t feel different. Not had any chips or damage to them either.

TheChicDreamer · 30/01/2026 20:37

I have a mix of veneers and composites. I would have all composites if only I hadn’t had veneers back in the day when they were the only choice; I had to have them replaced with new and better veneers recently.

Mind you, it’s my front top four that are veneered and they look very natural indeed. My composites are on my bottom front four and a couple of the top back, so not as prominent in position.

Anyway, they all look great and I’d definitely recommend you go for it.

Littlethatchedcottage · 30/01/2026 20:42

I’m looking into composite, I don’t want to have my teeth whitened as they are so sensitive so it’s good so many have had positive experiences.

ThatNaiceMember · 30/01/2026 22:19

I have composite bonding on my two front teeth because they got chipped. Just had it replaced after 13 years and honestly really pleased. It may look weird to you for a few days because it will be different so I suggest before and after photos so you can see it's definitely an improvement but yes go for it!

FredaMountfitchet · 30/01/2026 22:25

Had this .
Initially teeth felt ‘thicker’
Wore off after maybe a week or two .
Perfect colour match .
I’m old so it was done just to thicken wear up a bit .
Delighted with it
Dentist explained no removal of actual teeth or filing so if bonds fall off you are no worse off .
Husband had it too - he has a very different bit probably bites more with front teeth - his wore off very quickly within a couple of years .

SlothSpiritAnimal · 30/01/2026 22:32

My dentist said to be a bit cautious with this (I want it done!), because if you only have a few teeth done, it can cause different pressure in your bite and you risk snapping it chipping them unless you have them all done.
I’d like them done though because the bottom of my teeth looks bit more transparent than the rest due to enamel erosion.
