Teeth whitening but not expensive?

Just wondering if anybody has had any success with this with something cheap? (not dentist or lasers) I'm not expecting miracles just a bit of an improvement.

How regularly are people using the crest strips?

I use them once a year, I’ve been using them for years, I started them when I lived in the US, they’re great.

A train ticket in the mouth will at least give the impression..

Someone please explain why people don’t value their teeth and the dental profession enough to pay?
Yet they’ll happily pay out for hair dressers, face creams, nails (they coast a fortune!), Botox etc…..
You can get sushi at your local petrol station…… but I’m not sure I’d recommend that either
You only get one set of teeth…. Look after them

I always think we should get a whole new set at 40
go to bed and wake up with new teeth

Unfortunately that’s never going to happen.
Look after the ones you have

I got good results with Wisdom whitening strips. I think they were about £4 in the Range but Amazon do them. There's no peroxide in them.

My dentist sells the Phillips zoom 10% for overnight use in a retainer, but I buy it a lot cheaper online.

It is not legal to sell any whitening gels or strips that contain more than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide in the U.K. , EU or many other countries , there you have no guarantee these are safe , not counterfeit and are what they say they are.

Anyone selling them has no legitimate way of obtaining them and is knowingly breaking the law . https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/why-you-need-to-be-wary-of-home-tooth-whitening-kits-aTig20L4lJpb

There’s a reason why illegally supplied gels are cheaper than buying top ups from your dentist.

Why you need to be wary of home tooth whitening kits - Which?

Home tooth whitening is big business, but legally these kits can contain only a tiny amount of active ingredient, while some dodgy ones sold online contain far more than is allowed

If it's cheap it could be fake.
Surely paying £20-ish for the real thing from a dentist is better than wrecking your teeth?

the active ingredient is baking powder- bicarbonate of soda. You can buy toothpaste with that in or buy it in the supermarket in the baking aisle!

I started using Sensodyne Clinical Whitener ( Sensodyne Clinical ) and have had good results. I drink coffee and red wine so I think my yellowing may have been just staining, but it's worth a go as a cheaper option to see if that's the problem. After a few weeks of using it my sister asked if I had done something to my teeth as they seemed whiter... I use an electric toothbrush on the whitening setting and Sensodyne anyway as I have sensitive teeth and it was on offer, which I see it still is in Sainsbury's, so I stock up when it is. Might be worth a go!

I pay £56 online or £80 in the dentist. It’s the same stuff, just with the upsell and having to collect it from the dentist vs having it sent to my house.

AngelinaFibres · 01/02/2026 09:56

Lollygaggle · 29/01/2026 16:29

No you can’t legally as they contain too high a percentage of hydrogen peroxide to be sold legally in the U.K. or EU.

In which case are you happy to put something inside your body that is sold by criminals, knowingly breaking the law, and have no guarantee what you are buying is genuine or safe as there is no legitimate way of supplying them to the U.K?

There is no toothpaste or anything else you can buy over the counter that will whiten teeth. Whitening toothpastes just remove external stain , they do not whiten. They remove stain by either using acid or abrasives or both and what removes stain will also remove enamel .

Edited

All of this. If you want whiter teeth you have to go to a dentist and have it done properly. None of the things sold in the UK will do anything at all. The US things will give you huge problems in the future

No it’s not the upsell , most sell it pretty close to cost.

It’s that the dentist supplied are obtained legitimately from licensed sellers , in a legal manner , with the gels stored correctly , in date and legally obtained

the consumer bought ones are supplied illegally , from criminals, there is no guarantee they are not counterfeit and have been stored properly (refrigerated) and there is no legitimate way for the sellers to buy or import these products.

Here is a statement from SDI who manufacture pola night a gel which is often counterfeited and sold illegally https://sdidental.co.uk/the-dangers-of-illegal-tooth-whitening/

Lollygaggle · 01/02/2026 10:20

Here is a statement made by SDI against illegal suppliers

Happy Smile UK and Polanight.co.uk are businesses claiming to be distributors of SDI Pola whitening products .

I am the founder and managing director of SDI Ltd which is the manufacturer of all Pola products- please refe to https://www.sdi.com.au

Happy Smiles/Polanight.co obtain our products via dubious means. Pola products are manufactured in very strictly controlled enviroments, low temperatures and are transported to our legal distributors in temperature controlled conditions- hydrogen peroxide ( carbamide peroxide) is susceptable to warm temperature. Therefore I fear that what Happy Smiles/Polanight.co are offering an unsuspecting public is inferior, poorly controlled, out of date and ineffective product. This will result in a poor whitening effect at least and serious oral damage at the worst.

DO NOT purchase Pola products from Happy Smiles/Polanight.co- it may be cheaper but it WILL be be faulty and maybe dangerous. The only way to purchase these materials is to visit your dentist who will prescribe the correct product and will guarantee that it works-

And a message for Happy Smiles/Polanight.co. Cease and Desist this illegal trade or face the full legal consequenses from SDI and the UK Authorities who monitor such business- continue and our legal team is coming to get you!

Home Teeth Whitening are great for Phillips Zoom gel etc. I've never had a problem with them. I will say that the other makes such as Polar are super strong and I wouldn't recommend at all.
I had a proper mould made at the dentist but it did start having gaps when I cleaned it in water that was slightly warmer. Its too expensive for a replacement at the moment.
I tried to purchase the crest strips from Amazon US but it continually directed me back to the UK site 🤔

Me too, once a year is enough and then I use purple toothpaste inbetween.

Thanks for all the comments on here. What I was really looking for was something to make my teeth a bit whiter but without the cost of dentists, trays and all that. Like a toothpaste and there have been a couple of recommendations on here. I've no intention of messing up my teeth of course.

You cannot buy any whitening products off the shelf in the UK that have enough hydrogen peroxide in them to make a difference, it’s illegal. ‘Whitening’ toothpastes won’t make a difference. If you’re wanting a cheaper option, like PPs have said crest white strips are really good. I’ve used for years and never had a problem.

If your teeth are stained from coffee and wine then a toothpaste will help remove those stains.

If your teeth are naturally more yellow or have become darker with age, you need proper whitening at the dentists. many do payment plans. You're looking at around £350 for the at home trays, but it should last a couple of years before you need to do any top ups.

@blankcanvas3 Crest strips cannot be bought legally in shops in the UK , only online - that should tell you all you need to know.

Crest strips cannot be legally sold online either , it’s illegal to supply anything with a hydrogen peroxide content over 0.1% in the U.K., Europe , Australia etc

You cannot legally import them into the U.K. to sell.

I looked online before posting and I can't see any info on the Crest site on the % of HP.

6.5% to 14% hydrogen peroxide , in general , however I have seen strips sold with even higher percentage so none can be legally sold in the U.K.
