Foamy bar soap 🧼

I love bar soap (rather than shower gel) and used to use Original Source Lavender and Rosemary which really foamed up well, felt lovely on my skin and smelt lovely! But now it’s been discontinued Confused

Can anyone recommend a bar of soap that is really foamy and smells nice?

Yes. I was responding about foam. I buy bars not gels. My interest is ingredients and proper cleaning. Foam from oils also varies on how the bar has been made and how hard/soft water is where it is used.

And I was responding to your simply incorrect statement that Foam is created through additives and it uses lots of water and your soap bar the won’t last very long. It may be satisfying for you to use but it’s not healthy or environmentally friendly.

Foam in a true soap is not "created through additives".

The bit about 'lots of water' is neither correct nor does it make any sense.

The bit about "it’s not healthy or environmentally friendly" is absolutely incorrect and untrue.

I use baby soap.

Many thanks for all replies and recommendations.

There has been a lot of debate about foaming, additives etc. and I’m really just looking for a bar (not shower gel) soap, that smells nice (essential oils are my fave) lathers up well and makes my skin (which is dry and sensitive) feel good! So thank you for suggestions . Keep ‘em coming!

I’m lucky that I live in a soft water area and I usually use the white Imperial Leather soap, but when I tried the Original Source soap, it was so much more creamy and felt nice that I wanted to find something similar- I’m trying to work out which ingredient made it feel so nice 🤔

@Haffiana@Tortephantyou seem to have ingredients knowledge! What’s the magic ingredient that made this Original source one feel so foamy and creamy?

If what they say about coconut oil is true, it's the sodium cocoate.

Haffiana · 27/01/2026 12:54

Yes, it is the saponified coconut oil, sodium cocoate. The clay might make the bar feel smoother!

Im a soap maker, cold pressed soap made with 33% of each coconut oil, shea butter and a liquid oil like sweet almond is my go to recipe for a really nice lather. But for a harder bar that lasts longer get one that is sodium lactate of beeswax in the ingredients.

Cold process soap with natural oils instead of fragrance oils seem to make the body smell much nicer in my opinion, when I make my soaps my friends and family prefer a sweet orange oil or bergamot or lavender scent to the artificial scents.

If you’re a sweaty soul a charcoal soap is great for body odour. You can really shift the sweaty smell with that stuff.

I’d love to have my own business making soap for people because it is so lovely for the skin and so much more ethical than shower gels but it’s expensive to make and people tend to not have cash in this climate, maybe one day 🧼

@BrendaThePoodlethats really interesting and I wish I had a soap making friend like you!

Interesting to hear about charcoal and body odour- I’m not particularly sweaty but do you think this would work on a sweaty teen? Can you recommend any charcoal soaps?

I got a bar of penhaligons soap in tk maxx it's amazing , smells incredible, creamy and plenty of lather. Not sure I'd stretch to £25 full price though!

BrendaThePoodle · 27/01/2026 20:28

@rachll definitely for a sweaty teen! I make my sweaty teen a charcoal and tea tree soap, I can’t recommend any particular ones but you should be able to pick them up from Amazon easy enough :)

Do you know of any bar soaps that can be bought with those ingredients, or would they have to be home made?

The Almond and Fig Nesti Dante bar soap is the nicest I have found-it has a good lather.

This seems the most similar to my recipe, the price of soap has gone up quite a bit, Ive noticed the ingredients have gone up in price last few years but hasn’t everything! I can’t personally recommend these bars I’ve never used these ones but it’s not too far off from what I put in mine. I haven’t tried the soap you have mentioned but I have seen it discussed on here a few times. Mumsnet is a tough crowd so I will definitely treat myself one day!
One of my kiddos has sensitive skin and even aveeno and child’s farm are hit and miss so I made my first batch of soap with olive oil and it was lovely but took almost 6 months to cure but it was great on her skin. I think for a nice lather coconut oil is a great ingredient and most homemade soaps have it in, it’s cheaper than most oil and more ethical than palm oil so you should find some great products with that in.
