Does anyone use an epilator? If so does it really hurt & which one do you have?

Daren't try - too much of a coward

cmotdibbler · 13/06/2008 20:43

I've got a Phillips one, that came with an icepack - which I never use.

Best thing to do is to get your legs waxed and then start using it everyday so that you are only getting a few hairs in an area, then once you're used to it you can leave it longer between. I do my legs every three days or so, and that means theres never any hairs longer than a millimetre or 2

Blondilocks · 13/06/2008 20:49

Is it better than shaving?

Not sure I can put up with it being long enough to get waxed. Hate being hairy.

I hurts like &!@# if you have a full leg of hair. Much better, as dibbler says, and get legs waxed to start off, and then epilate every 3-4 days. Try to avoid doing it when you've got a period too as it hurts more then. I also need to exfoliate regularly to avoid ingrown hair.

onlygirl · 13/06/2008 20:55

ouch ouch ouch

RipMacWinkle · 13/06/2008 20:56

Just bought one today. Philips ice pack one is half price just now in Boots

Tried it briefly and thought it was ok. Couldn't work out what the fuss was about. Then checked my leg and tried again a minute later. Ouch. Turned out I was holding it too close the first time. Lucky for me the charge ran out!

I'm trying it as a cheaper, time-saving alternative to waxing.

cmotdibbler · 13/06/2008 20:56

It is better than shaving, especially for me with dark hair and very pale skin where I look a bit 6 o'clock shadow if I'm not carefull. And you can go away for a few days and not worry about taking a razor. I do my armpits too, and that looks loads better.

toobusytothink · 13/06/2008 21:05

Have used one since I was about 18 yrs old and can honestly say it no more than tingles now. Have always had quite a high pain threshold though. Think the more you use it the less it hurts. I have places on my legs now where there are barely any hairs and am sure it is to do with epilator. I even epilady my bikini line !!! (That does smart a little). Think mine is babyliss or something like that

Bronze · 13/06/2008 21:07

I use one and its ok now. first time it hurt like hell. I also pluck my armpits with tweezers.

Mojomummy · 13/06/2008 21:32

I have one & I don't really notice the pain....in fact it's almost quite ..pleasurable...

Only use it from the knee down.

I used it on the back of my mum's thighs once, she claims it was so painful, the hairs were too scared to grow back

harpomarx · 13/06/2008 21:36

god, I tried one years ago and thought it was hell!! However, the inbetween waxing use sounds interesting, I think trying it on a full leg of hair is a no-no, how much are they now?

cmotdibbler · 13/06/2008 21:42

Looking at Boots.com, they've got some offers on and they're down to 30 quid or so

avenanap · 13/06/2008 21:45

I have the one with the ice pack. I've used the ice pack once and it hurt like hell. The best time to use it is when you've just got out of the bath as your pores are open, it hurts alot less. Remember to exfoliate to prevent ingrowing hairs.

okeydokeygirl · 13/06/2008 21:52

I definitely agree with cmottdibbler. Get waxed then use as an interim measure. It hurts like hell, but as with waxing gets easier over time as the hair follicles get weaker over time. If you do use it regularly, it is important to exfoliate as well otherwise you may get ingrown hairs and then raised areas like spots where the hair can't break through the skin. I have waxed for about 18 years but still find the epilator excruciatingly painful in any areas other than the lower leg. I have sometimes got it out with male and femaile friends after drinkin a lot and played dares. Even the really hard core men with loads of tattoos and piercings can't handle it!!!!

Anna8888 · 13/06/2008 21:54

Have used an epilator for 20 odd years. Current one is a Braun (but it's ancient).

Anna8888 · 13/06/2008 21:55

I hardly notice it, btw - I can epilate and MN simulateously

okeydokeygirl · 13/06/2008 21:57

It prob depends on how hairy you are. I am from Mediterranean origin and really thick black hair all over so maybe be a bit tougher to get out - or maybe i am just a wimp.

hifi · 13/06/2008 22:02

i find waxing hurts less!

Furball · 13/06/2008 22:07

I've discovered the solution! have 2 epilators going at the same time. It really confuses the brain as it doesn't know quite which one gives more ouch factor and you hardly feel a thing

okeydokeygirl · 13/06/2008 22:10

Ouch!

Blondilocks · 13/06/2008 22:55

Thanks for that! Am just worried that if I buy it it will end up not being used which will be expensive.

ChasingSquirrels · 13/06/2008 22:58

I got one for xmas, it hurt a reasonable amount the first time - but then my legs tingled for ages after. Don't really find it hurts much now. I do legs and armpits.

ChasingSquirrels · 13/06/2008 23:01

have a look at amazon, they have some reasonably priced once. think mine is likethis but without the shave head)

chocolatescoffer · 14/06/2008 01:05

bloody hurts but you do get great results! well worth the pain....honest!

uberalice · 14/06/2008 07:55

Quick, but relevant hijack question - what should you use to exfoliate your legs?
