10yo wants acrylic nails

She has been asking for them for about a year and obviously it has been a firm “no”. However, her friends in her class have been allowed to get them done! I can’t quite believe that their parents are allowing 10 year olds to get their nails done!! I have seen the nails with my own eyes so I know she’s not bluffing.

I’ve given her plenty of reasons why I am saying no, but she is constantly pestering and saying all the usual “it’s unfair”, “my friends have theirs done an their nails haven’t been ruined”, “you never let me do anything” etc.

Am I the one being unfair??

Has anyone here allowed their 10 year old to get acrylic nails??

Interested to hear others’ opinions on this.

Jesus, 10?! I would absolutely be judging any parent who let their 10 year old have acrylics/ gels, anything like that!

Sugarpopsicle · 25/01/2026 14:33

No OP, way too young.

Onefortheroad25 · 25/01/2026 16:04

What about a school? It’s not a thing in my ds’s primary but in dd17’s secondary they would be sent straight home with acrylic nails. Really strict on it.

Acrylic nails would mean she wasn't bathing / swimming, playing fun sports, allowed to hold people's babies, making jewellery or doing other intricate art and crafts, planting flowers, helping bathe her pets... ie. living.

She also wouldn't be putting in her own contact lenses, buttoning her own buttons, baking, chopping up and preparing food, opening tins of fizzy pop, washing her own hair properly...

Ew. Ugh.

What? I bathe, swim, play sports, hold babies, do intricate things, garden and bathe my pets, wash my hair, bake, cook and dress myself perfectly fine with acrylic nails... They're the same length as my natural nails underneath, a few mm longer than my nail bed.

The answer to the OP's daughter is no, but not for any of the reasons you've listed.

Shatteredallthetimelately · 25/01/2026 16:31

You are not your DD friends parent, if you were by the sounds of it they wouldn't be having acrylic nails either so that arguments not to be had.

Personally I think 10 is way to young for acrylics.

Terfarina · 25/01/2026 16:43

Are you sure the friends don't have primark stick ons?

I wouldn't let my 16 year old have them, age 10 is bonkers. Particularly lonegr porny looking ones.

Temporaryname158 · 25/01/2026 16:46

Hard no

tell her firmly to just stop asking as you are sick of hearing about it and the answer will always be no until she can pay for it herself or she is 16, whichever comes first. (And they look tacky)

FirstdatesFred · 25/01/2026 16:48

There are sellers on Etsy who do great press on ones in custom sizes so she could get press ons the right size for her nails.
crazy claws is one I've had a good experience with: they look just like acrylics.

No, acrylic nails on a primary school child!? Why on earth hasn't the school banned them?

Why the school?

Surely the parent bans them before school even needs to be involved.

Be the adult parents!

Miranda65 · 25/01/2026 17:00

You're not unfair, OP, you're a responsible parent. The answer, obviously, continues to be "no".

Ohhhh!😳

Fallen for it again. Controversial opening post and poster doesn’t return.

Clickbate and advertising revenue.

I must check the OP’s return, before engaging with a thread! What a waste of time.

How is this ad revenue? Genuine question.

What salon would do them anyway?

A dodgy one employing illegal immigrants or people are doing this at home
just no tho it’s ridiculous

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/01/2026 01:28

No

PeachBlossom1234 · 26/01/2026 01:55

My DD10 has gel polish for special occasions - birthday and Christmas as a rule. Not for any other reason though

NewGirlInTown · 26/01/2026 01:56

Keep saying NO.
Ten year olds getting acrylic nails- who ARE those parents?
Aren’t there school rules about this?

JanuaryJasmine · 26/01/2026 02:18

No way.

its bad for her nails . But more importantly shes a child, who still has very porous nail beds. They should not be putting chemicals on their nails, which will go into their bodies.

Look this up for yourself then show her.& show her images if nails ruined by acrylics ! Women who get allergies from them.

its not a 'looks tacky' issues (even though if fuss! It's a health issue. I'd no sooner let her do this than drink.smoke.weed.

Eh? I am 100% against acrylic nails for children but this is a weird post. They do not stop you doing any of those things 😂

OvernightBloats · 26/01/2026 12:16

As a compromise, could you buy her some nail varnish so she can paint her natural nails if she wants? You could go to a shop with her to help her choose her favourite colour.

She is far too young for acrylic nails - don't succumb to pester power. Just because her friends are doing it, doesn't make it right.
