Help choosing ‘proper’ diamond earrings please!

I keep thinking I would love to treat myself to a pair of proper diamond earrings. I currently wear ‘diamond’ studs from Pandora which were around £50 but I’ve been thinking I’d love to treat myself to a real proper pair of diamond studs. I’ve had a look in some jewellers and if I’m honest a £100 pair looks the same to me as a £1000 pair! What should I be looking for and why do they range so much in price??

I’d love some that are really sparkly, studs but not too tiny or too big. Any advice where to look and what to ask for? Thank you

I bought some for my DD Christmas 2024 , she loves them ( 9ct gold 10 points of diamond )
TBH , I cannot tell the difference .
I have some Moissanite in silver ( I like white metal , DD likes yellow )
Mine are screw back so they stay in.

Personally earrings are not something I'd spend loads in , if I pull a jumper off and lose one I'd be gutted (which is why I like the screw backs )

And it's everyone else that can see the earrings , I can only see them in the mirror !

DD is very careful with jewellery , as she likes gold , it is more £ . She's got some gold plated on silver which I'd be less sad if she lost .

DH and I went to a Diamond Store in Amsterdam and it was interesting , the stones were amazing , the colours and reflection/refraction.
But £47,000 for a stone of less than 40 points ? Nooooooo. Not for me .

Ilikeyoursleeves · 24/01/2026 20:51

What do points of diamonds mean? And I had no idea you could screw in earrings, that’s genius

Half a carat is 50 points .
DD earrings are petite ( 5 points a piece ) but beautifully set so they really show the stones off . She has some gold hoops set with CZ , huggie ones that are 9ct gold and less than a centimetre . I wouldn't buy diamonds for them, they are beautifully set too but the £ is the gold .

I love the screw backs but I know others don't ,
I don't like big earrings myself ( I have 3 lobe +3 cartilage so they'd look overdone )

0.36ctw Round Brilliant Cut Diamond Earrings, 14ct White ...

I'd buy these if I wanted diamond earrings - I've letched over the jewellery stand in our local Costco and they do look nice .

I don't know if these are good price for this item but I've bought loads of branded products and electricals from here and been 100% happy .

The Moissanite I bought came with a certificate they are not diamond but behave pretty much the same - more light refraction if anything .

Following as I'd like to treat myself too. Not sure whether to go screw back or possibly a small hoop with a diamond.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/01/2026 21:30

Oh I just checked on my order , DD earrings were 20 points so 10 points per ear !

She definitely better not lose them Grin

Trouble with screw backs is if they catch then your ear is more at risk of damage .
And they take a while to put in / take out .

My ears are small and not fleshy so I sometimes have an excess of post !

Chocdown · 24/01/2026 21:34

I chose lab diamonds, which are cheaper. They don’t hold value well, if that’s a factor for you. But you can get a bigger stone with better specs without spending the earth.

What screwback earrings do you wear? I wear them but struggle to find nice ones

Ilikeyoursleeves · 24/01/2026 21:45

I’m not too bothered about holding value, it’s more to treat myself to something special and sparkly which I can wear every day. I got some extra money recently and instead of it just going into household stuff I thought I could treat myself to these as I’ve been thinking about getting some for years but never felt I could before!

https://www.abelini.com/product/platinum-and-yellow-white-gold-diamond-stud-earrings-ern00020 these are mine but in yellow gold - I wear them everyday so well worth the price. Very comfortable and sparkly. Loads of options in terms of shape, cut, lab grown, mined, carat etc.

My diamond studs are off at earring hospital having the posts and backs changed because the jeweller no longer does screw backs. This makes me wonder if that’s because people were getting ear injuries 🤨

I bought them online , cannot remember the brand but they had a certificate .

I was a bit eeurgh about the post at first as it isn't smooth like a regular post but it is fine . My first lobes were pierced 45 years ago .
They are a faff to thread the back on, these are the ones I put on standing over a white towel in case I drop the back as I don't have another that fits .
I've got some silver amethyst screw backs but different back

I have diamond studs that are just over 1 ctw.

We purchased them from a US website called Whiteflash, they ship all over the world.

You can choose a matched pair of diamonds that suit your criteria (4 c’s) and they’ll mount them in your choice of backing.

All their diamonds are GIA certified.

Mine weren’t cheap, but they were good value.

They have diamonds at all sizes and price points.

doublec · 04/02/2026 04:45

What a lovely idea. As you may know, diamonds are priced by the 4 Cs - Carat (weight), Colour (lack of yellow/brown with the closest to white being D), Clarity (flawlessness), Cut (proportions and light reflection). Diamonds hold their value well, so it's a good investment, if purchased with care. It's silly not thinking about them holding value. If you really don't care, buy some costume jewellery or lab grown diamonds. But I think that's rather defeating the object. Diamonds are affordable, it is just a question of finding a pair that is priced correctly for you.

In terms of pricing, you are mostly paying for a brand name if you purchase from say Mappin & Webb, Tiffany, De Beers etc. Your best bet is to go to either Hatton Garden if you're in London, or else a local jeweller who specialises in gemstones. You will definitely get more for your money if you take your time to find the right person to guide you. Knowledge is everything, not only theirs, but yours. By this I mean not just looking at the stones, but trying them on and working out what colour/cut you like on your ear lobes, but how you feel in them. Some prefer tiny chips, others like a larger stone. Some a classic round brilliant cut, others emerald cut, ad infinitum. There are lots of shapes available. The only way to decide what is best for you to go and try them on. And, once you start looking in person, your eye will adjust and begin to tell the difference in quality, particularly in terms of colour. I say this as someone who has always been interested in gemstones, and during a sabbatical of sorts, gained a certificate in diamond grading from Gem-A.

On my part, I have a pair of diamonds studs set in platinum, each around a carat each. One is slightly over, one slightly under. The colour is F, and a well-matched pair. Very few inclusions, one is a VS1, the other VVS1. The stones were purchased by my mother in Amsterdam in the early 1980s, and set by a jeweller in London. She wore them every day for almost twenty years, and I have worn them pretty much every day since she died. They make me feel dressed (and v. special). They're not ostentatious, in fact, I sometimes wish they were a larger carat!! Unless someone knows what they're looking at, you might not even think they're real. Have worn them everywhere and never once felt unsafe in them. Since I started wearing them, I rarely wear anything else in my ears. I love them and are thankful to have them as there is no way I could have afforded to buy them (or something remotely equivalent) myself.

PS. They are regular butterfly backs and have never had lost one. But then I do wear a small plastic back as well as the platinum butterfly back.

Get LOX brand backs from Amazon - they are extra secure backs, worth the £10 they cost!

that seems a very reasonable price to me! im tempted

Mithral · 04/02/2026 18:08

I'd go lab grown - there is 100% zero chance of being able to tell the difference between mined and grown. Even with large diamonds you need specialist equipment to tell. For sparkly studs it seems an absolute no brainer to me to go with grown. You also avoid any worry about the ethics of mined diamonds.

Anonmousse · 04/02/2026 18:22

Im a jeweller, difference in price can be down to size (weight) of diamond, colour, clarity and most critically if they are lab grown or natural.
To buy in the trade lab grown are maybe 1/10th price depending on size. Although metal prices are high at the moment

Lab grown diamonds are exactly the same chemical structure as natural mined diamonds - so have the same qualities - unlike cubic zirconia , or mossanite.

I would go against the grain and not recommend screw fittings, they are fiddly to put in and easy to mis -thread, or break. I deal with an insurance company and honestly majority of the earrings we replace - because they are lost or broken - are screw fittings.

Depending on how much you want to spend, I would advise getting lab grown diamonds, in gold or platinum. Apart from being cheaper to buy in the first instance, there isnt the same ongoing cost of insuring them.

1 pair regular piercings plus a 2nd piercing in one ear
Daith , tragus, forward helix cartilage piercings
Grin

I have a paid of screw-back diamond studs and hate them as the screw posts are wider than on normal earrings and they are really uncomfortable to wear!
