Do you think shopping in charity shops has become a hobby?

As well as looking for a bargain, I feel it’s become a bit of a leisure activity too.

Well, yes, of course, much like shopping is mostly a hobby too.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 24/01/2026 15:32

I've certainly known people who toured charity shops as a hobby and never bought anything. I went round someone who did this once. I'd rather watch paint drying, myself!

BauhausOfEliott · 24/01/2026 15:32

It’s always been a hobby. Shopping in general has always been a leisure activity.

Stuckstuckstuckfuck · 24/01/2026 15:34

It's just shopping. Some people think shopping is a hobby.

Uhghg · 24/01/2026 15:34

I hate shopping so I try and do as little as possible so it’s definitely not a hobby for me.

But I know many women who have searching for bargains in charity shops as their actual hobby or shopping in general.

ItsStillWork · 24/01/2026 15:37

A lot of my family members are very into charity shops.

they buy stuff they weren’t actually looking for, because it’s cheap and they think it would come in useful. I personally hate them, I would rather watch paint dry than trail round charity shops.

WritingTheBook · 24/01/2026 15:44

A relative of mine became quite mean with herself and would never buy anything new. Her charity shopping got ridiculous to the point where she was spending a lot of money on stuff she didn’t actually want just because it was a bargain and she couldn’t leave it. She was ‘gifting’ it to us and other family. I told her that we didn’t want it after she gifted us random crap a few times but she still tries it. It’s like an addiction. If she sees something that she thinks is a bargain, she can’t leave it for someone else, even if she doesn’t want it. If you suggest meeting up for a meal or a walk, she’ll try to take you charity shopping instead. It’s definitely a hobby for her, but it’s out of hand imo. 😬

Absolutely!! Im a huge chazzer fan and my town has a plentiful supply. One of them has a 50p rail, I bought a blouse for 50p, did some research on the label and sold it for a fiver 😀

ThirdStorm · 24/01/2026 16:23

I really enjoy a charity shop. I have two I go to weekly, so well run and lots of lovely things. Often just to browse. Occasionally I’ll make a morning of it like last Saturday I went in 5!

Which you then donated to charity?

ProfYaffle · 24/01/2026 16:39

Sort of. I enjoy it when I'm in the mood. I don't look for clothes, more unusual books, vintage kitchenware etc Picked up some embroidery threads for 20p a skein today.

Floisme · 24/01/2026 16:39

It's clothes that are the hobby for me. But I can't afford to buy the clothes I like new so charity shops are one way of hunting them down. I do enjoy the hunt too though, far more than I do scrolling Vinted or Ebay. And because I can see and try on before buying, I'm less likely (although not guaranteed) to end up with a dud.

Allseeingallknowing · 24/01/2026 16:35

No of course I didnt. Once it leaves their premises its no longer their property. They have huge amounts of clothing to shift and welcome resellers. They dont have time to research every single item before putting it on sale. So this time they snoozed and lost 🤣

Wickedlittledancer · 24/01/2026 16:42

Not for me, no, I really dislike the jumble, the smell. Nothing against second hand clothes, I use vinted, but I don’t enjoy charity shops at all.

Needmorelego · 24/01/2026 16:45

For me yes it's definitely a hobby (car boot sales too) but I don't buy clothes.
I go for books, comics and toys/collectables.
I bought 3 books today for my various collections.

Zoesmumma · 24/01/2026 16:46

I buy almost all my clothes from the chazza. It absolutely is a hobby and my kids love it too.
I started going in the 90s when I was at sixth form and I’ve never stopped, we always visit the local ones when on holiday too.

ThatsPlentyIsa · 24/01/2026 16:53

Yup, I’ll put my hand up to that. I drop into my favourites every time I’m in town, as stock moves so quickly. It’s like a lucky dip. I love vintage glass, mid century tableware, costume jewellery - all given an appreciative new home with me.

cartagenagina · 24/01/2026 16:55

No, but Vinted is definitely my hobby!

Marble10 · 24/01/2026 17:07

I fear I am addicted to charity shopping. I also seem to be spending more as I think it’s a bargain and benefitting a good cause - but I wouldn’t usually shop multiple times a week.

purpledagger · 24/01/2026 20:58

Not for me.

i can’t be bothered with rummaging, but i love shopping.

AgentPidge · 24/01/2026 22:01

Yes, I think so. I now pop into town once a fortnight or so and go round the charity shops. I have a bit more money these days and so will buy a jumper for £6 or whatever without feeling guilty that I'm buying something I don't really need. Sometimes it works and I get a bargain; sometimes I get home and decide against it and I donate it again.

I know someone who is wealthy but buys her clothes in charity shops and enjoys finding a bargain.

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 22:02

I doubt it, they tend to smell a bit fusty.

stickydough · 24/01/2026 22:03

It always was, what do you mean become?

FrodoBiggins · 24/01/2026 22:05

RedRiverShore6 · 24/01/2026 22:02

You can wash them before you wear them you know 😂
I agree it's a hobby for some but it's nothing new. Aged 16 I spent many happy free afternoon in the chazzers. Aged 40 I still spend my (less frequent) free time doing the same - or more often on Vinted where there are also bargains galore

MCR24 · 24/01/2026 22:14

I mainly use them for jigsaws as I get through so many of them.
