Recommendations for inexpensive face cream for dry, over 50’s skin please?

Under £20 roughly. I’d like something that leaves me with a bit of a glow, so light reflecting maybe? I use a BB cream instead of foundation now, but my skin is still dry and flaky in places. I also have sensitive eyes and lots make my eyes water dreadfully, so it needs to be a sensitive one ( appreciate that might just be hit and miss though and difficult to predict which are ok and which not.) Many Thanks.

Aldi’s lacura rejuvenate day cream spf 50 is good, matched with an additional sunscreen face stick.

Look on Boots £10 Tuesday Boots no 7 and other brands often on offer.

I have sensitive skin and have used Simple for years with no problems at all

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/01/2026 11:17

Emollient ointment - use it for hot water cleansing with a flannel.

It's absolutely brilliant for removing makeup without causing irritation to the eyes, the flannel lightly exfoliates, it feels amazing afterwards and doesn't disrupt the skin barrier.

Other than that, a facial sunblock every day.

Once you've got those basics sorted, you can consider things such as light retinol creams, vitamin C or anything cosmetic - as keeping the skin clean and healthy comes first and could mean that you can stay with your BB cream.

Cerave advanced repair ointment has saved my dry skin. It wear it at night, it is thick but it sinks in beautifully. I really rate revolution miracle cream for daytime but wish they would do an spf version

DesparatePragmatist · 24/01/2026 11:27

If you're anything like me, it's the SPF in creams and foundations that irritate your eyes. Now i only buy them without, and get the Anthelios 'no eye stinging' factor 50 lotion to use separately. La Roche Posay do one as well. You have to really check for that no eye sting note on the packet.

Also 50s with very dry sensitive skin, and find that Olay and Cerave are good for me

ooscal · 24/01/2026 11:33

Asking for a friend 😉do you put the SPF cream on before or after (or instead of!) your normal moisturiser - if that doesn't have an SPF.

namechangenumerouno · 24/01/2026 11:34

Simple light moisturiser

Cherubneddy · 24/01/2026 11:54

Thanks everyone. I should have said, Simple isn’t moisturising enough for me.
Desperatepragmatist, I think you’re right that it’s the SPF that causes the eye issues, as sun cream is the WORST! I can’t have it anywhere near my eyes and end up with burning around there in summer. I can’t believe I haven’t clocked this before! Thank you. Difficult as nearly all creams seem to have SPF in them. I’m going to look into Antheloiis and La Roche Posay.

I love Cetaphil - the moisturising cream rather than lotion, it’s much thicker but not clogging (on my dry 50+ skin anyway). If it does suit you, the large tub is very good value.

DesparatePragmatist · 24/01/2026 17:25

After several summers of streaming eyes and no makeup, I've binned all other suncreams. It's a game changer if it is your issue, good luck!

I put it on as the last layer (before makeup, if I'm wearing it). So on top of serums and moisturisers. The 2 brands I mentioned do quite nice small bottles of lotion-style spf 50, so i keep one with my moisturiser and just whack it on daily. Another one in my handbag (I burn like a vampire)

AncoraAmarena · 24/01/2026 17:49

I absolutely love Byoma. Am using their barrier repair cream this winter. I have sensitive skin too and all the Byoma stuff is 👌

Manifesto · 24/01/2026 17:52

Weleda skin food. Fabulous stuff.

user2848502016 · 24/01/2026 17:57

cerave and welda skin food are good
DD swears by Nivea soft
I like Clinique dramatically different which is the only thing that is moisturising enough and not irritating for me in winter, will be out of your budget but I find I use less so actually it’s good value for money compared to cheaper brands

Arran2024 · 24/01/2026 18:08

Boots no 7 range - they usually do a 3 for 2 offer which brings the price down a bit.

I can't use "thin" cream like Clinique. I have tried plenty of creams from various French companies which you can find in Boots in the skin care aisle, but they aren't creamy enough and imobthey have a horrible smell.

ReadingCrimeFiction · 24/01/2026 18:20

Take a look at Neutrogena. The hydra boost range is good and some have SPF and some don't.

If your skin is 50+ and you're dry and flakey, what are you doing to prep your skin for moisterising? I've always been very good about cleaning my skin at night but as I've got older, I've found I can't rely on just a little water in the morning as otherwise my skin is too flakey/rough. So I would consider, if you're not already, upping your cleansing game in the mornings too! Somthing with Salicylic acid is a good choice. It's more expensive, but I also love all the Clarins cleansers - I rotate them in the mornings.

Cando6 · 24/01/2026 18:23

Boots No.7. Often very good offers on. V good products for the price

Bibbitybobbity70 · 24/01/2026 18:25

I've very dry & sensitive skin. I've been using Aveeno face range for past 2 yrs & it's been pretty good & inexpensive for daily use. For periods when my skin feels like it needs a bit extra (winter generally with cold winds & central heating) I use Guinot comfort range which is a bit pricier but really feels lovely on dry stressed skin.

JadeSeahorse · 24/01/2026 18:26

I'm just 70 and have been using L'Oréal 65+ day and night creams for about a year now and my skin is wonderfully moisturised. £5 a jar so a real bargain.

However, if your budget will stretch a little further I would definitely suggest Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. I also use this as a back up and my DD - in her 30's - has SLD so I have to put it on for her when I see her 4/5 times per week and it keeps her skin wonderfully for at least 48 hours after applying. (I usually buy on eBay and have had some real bargains plus you only need a tiny amount so it lasts ages.)

UpMyself · 24/01/2026 18:30

@ooscal , you put it on after serum (if you use one) and moisturiser, but before any make-up.

@Cherubneddy , using a moisturising cleanser can help. I use Johnson's baby lotion then wipe it off with a dampened wipe. Byoma is worth a try.
Boots No 7 has a good choice of moisturiser - ask on the counter, and Lacura/Cien is fab for pocket money prices.

deeahgwitch · 24/01/2026 18:50

I use The Inkey List Bakuchiol.
“It’s a plant based retinol alternative moisturiser that helps firm skin, improve elasticity and reduce fine lines “
so the blurb goes.
I like it as a moisturiser and it’s not too expensive at approximately €15.

PinterandPirandello · 24/01/2026 18:50

La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume 5+
