Long hair- should I care?

Looked round a class of ladies the other day, we are all late 50’s-60’s, about 40 of us. I am the only one with long hair, it is bra strap length. I started to wonder if i’m too old for long hair?? It’s in good condition, red with very little grey and trimmed regularly. Do you think long hair ia aging?

I think Jane Seymour might be able to give you an answer...

Petrine · 21/01/2026 20:13

I think it depends on the person and their overall style. I have long hair and I’m 70. I’ve never considered cutting it because of my age. It suits me and I’ve no plans of changing it in the future unless I feel it no longer flattering.

HopingForTheBest25 · 21/01/2026 20:36

I think this is about the quality of the hair and the cut. I've just had mine cut into a blunt bob because it was looking raggedy AF and I kept scraping it back into a claw clip. If I'd been blessed with beautiful, thick, glossy hair too right I'd have kept it long. I'm 52 and work with lots of women in their 40s/50s who have long (lovely hair).
We all suit different things and should style ourselves accordingly - there's no such thing as should/shouldn't when it comes to age and what is 'appropriate'

I'm early 60s and have shoulder length hair- wear it whatever way you like - tho I personally dislike mega long hair - gives me
the ick

Ginmonkeyagain · 22/01/2026 08:19

I don't think it is about long hair itself being ageing so much as the quality of hair being ageing as others have said.

I'm late forties and last year decided to grow my hair long again after a decade or so of having a short layered bob. It got to bra strap length but it was increasingly hard to keep neat and in good condition. It now seems to be drier, more prone to frizz and unruly waves than the last time I wore it this long in my early 30s. I am also greying slightlly and growing my hair longer makes the greys much more noticeable somehow.

Last week I got it thinned out and chopped back to a blunt chin length cut, and it looks a lot healthier and neater.

I'm 61 and have a shoulder length bob, natural colour which is grey blonde white depending on the light. If I try and grow it longer it goes straggly. I think as long as it looks ok, then have it how you like just as you would have in your 30's. I think remaining objective about how your whole appearance really looks is key here, no point having long hair because you always have, which is dyed an unflattering colour for your older skin tone because that's how it's been for decades if that makes you look older than you are and does absolutely nothing for you

I'm a hairdresser !!!
Wear your hair how u want !!! If u suit it and love it there's your answer !
The reason alot of ladies keep it shorter could be due to quiet a few factors
Health of hair thinning ect menopause thyroid
Mobility as in not been able to dry or style due to pain
Sometimes over processed hair needs obviously more haircuts
And sometimes it just suits to have it shorter
I have always had a sharp bob but the last year I realise I need a bit more length so I really baby my hair and it's just on shoulders now and I'm going to keep growing it til I have long hair 😘I'm gonna be 50 this year and it's the first time I fancy having long hair I love it on older lady's x

Noshadelamp · 22/01/2026 09:18

There's no such thing as too long for long hair unless you are unable to wash and dry it.

It's such a misogynistic attitude that society has internalised.

It makes no sense, why should age determine how long your hair is??

I'm mid 50s with long hair and it's my superpower!

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/01/2026 09:18

I’m 54 and have long hair. It was way down my back but my hairdresser cut an inch or two off and maybe shaped it more. I preferred the length to be honest. It’s now still just below bra strap length though. And highlighted but natural tones with blonde framing highlights.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 22/01/2026 09:23

The reason many people women keep their hair shorter as they age is that is thins with menopause. Is your hair still thick? If so then wear it in whatever style you like.

BauhausOfEliott · 22/01/2026 09:23

It’s not 1950. Women can have long hair at any age.

Christmaseree · 22/01/2026 09:27

Wear it however you want. I’m nearly 57 and my hair is just above bra strap length. I get it cut every 7 weeks, it’s shiny and healthy looking.
I may switch to a bob in about five years for a change as that also suits me.
I don’t wear my hair up unless I’m exercising, when I was mid 30’s I got into the habit of always putting it up. So I said to myself if I’m going to do it I may as well have in cut into a shorter style. This works for me as I wear it down and then style it nicely.

Bimmering · 22/01/2026 09:28

It depends on the person - some women look great with long hair as they get older

But I think - being totally honest - I do see a lot of older women with long hair who would look better with it shorter. I clung to my long hair for a long time but it looks a lot healthier shorter and it somehow suits my features more

I don't think it's ageist or sexist to acknowledge that different things do suit older people more than younger people and vice versa. We don't expect the same skincare and makeup to be right for us as we get older, same is true for hair

Iocanepowder · 22/01/2026 09:28

Keep it op! I’ve never been able to grow my hair long and am so jealous!

dicentra365 · 22/01/2026 09:32

Im a little younger than you and about to go for a bob, my hair just isn’t the same quality as it was when I was younger so I would rather cut it off. However if it still looks great, why not? I imagine your friends are being pragmatic because of the condition of their hair rather than deciding that they must have short hair because they are older.

FondOfOwls · 22/01/2026 09:38

If it's nice and healthy it won't age you, OP. Do you like it? I am 'only' 38 and went back to a bob again, but my hair's always been fine and to be perfectly honest, pretty crap even when I was 20! I will grow it out again, probably, decide it looks flat/scraggly, cut it again... 😅

LaddersAndLadders · 22/01/2026 10:09

There is no such thing as too old for long hair. Just like short hair it can look fab at any age.
I think some people as they get older might decide to go shorter due to hair thinning or growing our dyed hair or even difficulty or couldn't be bothered using a (possibly heavy) hairdryer etc.

henlake7 · 22/01/2026 11:56

I think the majority of the time its just because often your hair just gets shit as you age. I used to have long thick hair, now I cant really grow it below bob length and its thin, dry and horrible looking.
If I had lovely thick hair still I would be keeping it long til Im 90 and beyond!

SemmaLina · 22/01/2026 12:00

I’m 65 and have shoulder length hair , still a brunette , but with some silver streaks now
It does take more time and effort ( and products !) now to keep it looking good , but I’m retired so I have time
I don’t like me with short hair , doesn’t suit me

Livpool · 22/01/2026 12:25

My mum is 78 and has long hair - she suits it. I think it is very old fashioned for women to cut hair when they get to a ‘certain’ age
