I am going to my nephews wedding in London at the end of March. They are a stylish artsy couple. It a town hall type wedding with food afterwards. My usual wedding attire won't do. I am used to Scottish barn/ceilidh type weddings.

I am 63, 5'6", size 16/18, apple shaped. I would like something with long or 3/4 length sleeves, longish (but not maxi), no floral prints. I like natural fabrics. Will need dress and shoes. I can't wear high heels due to a hip issue.

I prefer to go to actual shops and i can get in to Edinburgh easily. Where should i be looking?

Dr Google tells me there's a John Lewis in Edinburgh. I had a very positive experience with a prebooked fashion stylist appointment in the Leeds branch.
Very helpful and not pushy.
I'm a similar age and this was for my daughter's wedding

End of March is a difficult period temperature wise. You will need a coat. Budget?

I have coats that would be fine. Budget maybe £250ish for the dress. Nice shoes i imagine in the region of £150.

Relaunched bombshell. Any good?
I keep shoes simple nowadays. Gabor works for me. Last year I bought a pair of pointy toed t bar slingbacks for 90ish for a special occasion and they were so comfy I wore them quite a lot.

On the whole London isn't very smart at all so don't be overwhelmed by that.

Those dresses have very defined waists.I like a dress to come from under my bust then skim. I like Gabor shoes and can buy them locally.

True. Perhaps go to JL when there's a bit more stock in and try on lots. Baukjen always looks far better off than on. Seasalt have a couple of very forgiving under the bust styles, but probably not smart enough and usually floral!

Not a fan of Seasalt. I have one in my local town and don't buy much from it. Too floral/patterned/frumpy. Baukjen is more appealing. Where can I try on that?

I really want to give stylish vibes!

JL stock Baukjen. Would you consider silk trousers and something tuniccy? Ralph Lauren, Marella? Cos sometimes have things that are a bit different - again, better on than off.

I would prefer a dress. Trousers are tricky unless they are elasticated. I have no waist!

I find the materials in Cos tricky as they are often thick and unyielding. I am better with flowy materials.

Thank you @Missohnoyoubetterdont. Those dresses define exactly the type of thing I don't want in terms of pattern. I would call them traditional wedding attire. The shapes are good though. I'm looking for block colours maybe.

A great trouser suit for someone else! Not for me even slightly. It would look fab on my 28yo, size 10, 5'9" DD though.

Fair point. There's an absolute tonne of dresses and outfits on Wallis and they have a great sale on. Have a looksee. So many different styles, fabrics, cuts, and prices.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/01/2026 07:40

The green one and the blue one are lovely but i fear satin is not for me. I'm too sweaty and crumply to pull off satin. The red is beautiful but not for me. I will need sleeves of some sort.

I despair of myself as i am so fussy!

ApolloandDaphne · 21/01/2026 07:42

The navy Wallis one is lovely but it is petite and I am certainly not petite!

I really like those Wallis dresses. And what a bargain.

Brown with bronze or gold shoes and accessories would look great I think.
