Do your colours change as you age?

A few of those find your true colours ads have been popping up on social media so I decided to try one.

I’m pretty sure I am now a ‘soft Autumn’ as opposed to the ‘warm Autumn’ I thought I was. The colours in my wardrobe lately would bear this out too.

No nothing can change your season.

KiddyMcKiddly · 17/01/2026 15:43

I think the colours within the season that best suit you do change as you age. Now I'm older I am more towards the "autumn jewel" than "autumn leaf" that a was initially.

user2848502016 · 17/01/2026 15:48

No, if you’ve found your proper colour season it never changes.

TreesAtSea · 17/01/2026 16:00

In my experience your underlying season of colours won't change, if that's the system you're referring to. However, skin tone can change as you age, often meaning that you may suit softer versions of "your" colours when older.

It's also often said that hair colour won't affect which colours/tones suit, but I disagree. I was originally brunette but grew out my grey hair a few years ago, after which barely any colours at all looked right. Now that I've gone back to brown hair, all my previous colours suddenly suit me again.

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/01/2026 16:05

DM who is in her 80s has almost white hair and looks lovely in lilac and mint. Those colours never used to suit her at all. She used to wear Autumn colours like mustard yellow, chocolate brown, green, orange.

deeahgwitch · 17/01/2026 16:07

I agree with @TreesAtSeare hair colour.
”They”, the Colour Analysis people that it doesn’t affect what colours suit you.
I believe it does .
How can it not ?
I think your skin tone changes too.
I was Warm Spring but as I have got blonder and older I am now Light Spring and some Light Summer colours also suit me.

MightyGoldBear · 17/01/2026 16:09

Oh I would love to have my colours done. Does this have to be done in person or is there suitable apps/websites that do this?

Currently growing out my silver hair so feel my colours are changing. Previously blonde and strong greens/blues has always suited me but I feel maybe lighter shades might suit me more now with the silver.

Floisme · 17/01/2026 16:22

I don’t follow colour analysis too closely but my skin tone has definitely changed as I’ve aged e.g. the foundation I used to swear by now looks weird on me.

willowstar · 17/01/2026 16:33

I don't know what it is, but I lost a lot of weight and now I can wear black whereas I really couldn't when. I was bigger. It could be to do with being a bit older too, I don't know. I am 51.

Also I now have really quite red cheeks a lot of the time and don't suit red as much as I used to.

TreesAtSea · 17/01/2026 16:35

@MightyGoldBear I imagine an in-person consultation would be more thorough, though opinions of different consultants could vary.
Some MNers on another thread recently have used ChatGPT, though they say with sometimes surprising results.
There are apps. I used the free version of Show My Colors; the paid version gives more options. I already knew I was likely to be an autumn, but it was interesting to see the colour palettes it suggested.
There are also books, probably the most well-known being the Colour Me Beautiful ones which first came out decades ago. I think they're still in print, but I picked up one in a charity shop recently which has been good to look through.

MayaPinion · 17/01/2026 16:56

They definitely do. When I was young I really suited candy colours - turquoise, pink, orange, sunshine yellow, etc. Now in my 50s I look like Sue Pollard on acid if I wear them, but I look great in sage, cornflower blue, brick red, and weirdly, mustard.

outerspacepotato · 17/01/2026 16:58

Yes, my skin tone changed over decades from a warmer olive to a neutral to cool olive. I could wear warmer colours well where now cooler tones work better.

Mlk8 · 17/01/2026 17:01

Im not an expert on seasons but I can tell you I go from deep winter to deep autumn depending on if I tanned or if I dyed my hair jetblack and now I'm older my complexion and hair are getting duller and paler or sallower, we do lose pigment as we age so I can believe we lose the higher contrast unless of course you're dying your hair and eyebrows jet black or something.

Yes exactly - I used to love a bright red but now it looks totally wrong on me but a softer hue looks much more flattering.

I was analysed by Style Me Happy. She said I was a light spring. Currently I have blonde hair, blue eyes, light skin. However, my natural hair colour is medium brown. I asked her if I went back to medium brown would I still be a light spring and she said that it would be likely I could pull off the brighter colours of bright spring then. So still a spring, but a change within the season.

My skin has definitely lost pigmentation as have my lips.

There’s quite a few apps you can try, I used one called Dressika which is free for a basic set of colours. You can add make up and change hair colour too (I don’t suit blue hair as it turns out 🤣).

When I was analysed I was told that I was on the cusp between warm autumn and soft autumn and would need to adapt my colours as I got older. I think it depends on individual colouring rather than a hard and fast rule.

CarminaBiryani · 17/01/2026 17:17

You won't change season but you can change subtype.

I went with House of Colour, not cheap but really comprehensive, have a fan booklet I can take shopping and I know exactly what my top 10 colours are - shocking pink, aquamarine, bright navy, leaf green etc., which is quite specific but really useful.

It must actually save you lots of money knowing what suits you and avoiding those impulsive purchases!

Good old Sue!

My colours haven't changed but my jewellery colour has. My colours have always been winter and I looked my best in silver but as my skin tone has changed in my 60s I now look much better in gold.

Yes, same here! Very much to my surprise 😳

Darklane · 17/01/2026 20:50

I did House of Colour years ago & am a Blue Spring. As I’ve got older my skin has gone much paler & my hair is completely white. So the colours that suit me within the palette have changed. I can’t wear any of the yellows, corals at all. Far better in the blues, greens, purples & turquoises but surprisingly it is the dark shades of them that look best on me now. The lighter ones completely wash me out
