To microblade or not to microblade?

I'm looking for any advice on what to do with my eyebrows. They're quite sparse, not terrible but I have to fill them in with a pencil most days and I'm not the best at doing it. I like the look of my brows when they've been laminated (after a day or two) but I find that even after I've had this done I still need to make time to brush them and fill in any gaps with a pencil every day. I also don't like the way the process can almost perm some of my eyebrow hairs. Ideally I'd like something where I don't have to touch my brows day to day but I'm not sure if this exists!

I was looking at microblading and have found a practitioner that looks really good, but I'm worried about the long term implications - I've heard that they might fade a different colour and can look progressively worse with each touch up. Is this an experience anyone else has had?

If you've had microblading done - what was your experience? Is it worth it or should I just commit to getting mine tinted and shaped every month and investing in a brow serum? Do any of them actually work?! Thanks if you've got this far!

Don't do it. In a few years sparse eyebrows may very well be in fashion.

I vaguely remember that in medieval times there was fashion for shaving off your eyebrows 🙄.
I'm a senior with now very sparse very pale brows, I would love proper brows again. I hate seeing pencilled in eyebrows.

hobbledyhoy · 12/01/2026 20:48

I’ve not had it done out of fear of a bad outcome and that once there I wouldn’t be able to remove it.

I’ve been using 5% minoxidil solution (regaine) in the morning and rapidbrow in the evening and is definitely helping with growth and density.

onemoretimefromthetop · 12/01/2026 20:48

I say do it. I've had mine done and it was the best decision for me - it's really helped frame my (quite round and pale) face.

You're right that it does fade over time, so the first time you get it done is going to be the best they'll look. But even though it doesnt look as precise after a touchup i still much prefer the way they look now V before!!

You need to find someone good - those block colour eyebrows are horrifying! By good, i mean the girl i went to spent about 2 hours just on the design of my brows before she even began the tattoo.

My girl also offers tattoo removal so assume some people are choosing to have removal and then get them redone? But I don't feel that's necessary for me.

OneBlueDreamer · 12/01/2026 21:12

I had mine done 3-4 years ago and the normal top-up after. I was a little shocked at first as they appeared quite dark (and my natural ones were very sparse) but once healed they were great, and still are.

It's an odd sensation when they are being done, I wouldn't say painful as such and at certain points kept making me sneeze!

I have no regrets, and like others have said, make sure you find someone good.

KatharinaRosalie · 12/01/2026 21:17

Mine are not microbladed but semi-permanent tattoo. I had them done I think 10 or so years ago, have had some top ups since then and I love them so much! Best thing ever. Second best is the tattoo eyeliner. I am blonde so even if I had thicker eyebrows, I would have to constantly dye them, so tattoo saves me so much time.

TricNorthCarolina · 12/01/2026 21:39

I had mine done in 2021 & had a top up just before Christmas. I have nothing bad to say about them.

I have ombre/borderless brows & they look natural. Rhe first appt was 90 minuyes & she spemt a long time mapping my eyebrows & checking I was happy with the shape, style & colour before she actually tattooed it. The top up was necessary as they had faded & when they were topped up, she added some warmth so they didn't go grey.

They are honestly the best money I've spent on my face!

I dont have any tattoos & I haven't had an issue with my brows at all, absolutely no horror stories.

I went with someone who had been doing it a long time & was recommended to me by several people who had had their eyebrows done by her too. She is very good & also teaches others to do it.

I know around 20 people who have had their eyebrows microbladwd (friends & people I work with), and they've not all used who I did & not a single one of them has had any issues at all.

Make sure you use someone who has been doing it a long time, has fantastic reviews (hopefully from people you know) & you feel comfortable with.

TheChicDreamer · 12/01/2026 21:46

I had mine done after seeing how amazing my friend’s looked. Not cheap, but well worth it. She used numbing cream and I even fell asleep during the appt!

I must book a top up in soon.

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 12/01/2026 21:47

After 2 upper blephs my eyebrows were a bit wonky. It done my head in doing them every day and wondering what had rubbed off etc. 8 weeks before my wedding after months of research I went to a local lady with amazing reviews. Its now 16 months later. I am due a top up in september. And I have been ecstatic with them. I have hair there and I am a natural dark blonde. All of the gaps were filled and the tail of one extended out. And they were evened out. Colour has stayed also. Because they were a real sticking point for me after surgery and really bugged me every day in the mirror, the new ones have really changed my life and I am much happier with them.

modernminimalist · 12/01/2026 21:51

I had micro pigmentation (single needle) done in 2017
they've faded but still there, no top ups
I can find pics if you like

Are you going back to the same person again? Can you see anything now on your brows or has it faded to nothing?

Yeah, same person again. It’s all faded to nothing now except for one tiny bit on the arch of one brow. There’s no hair there (she had microbladed there to even out my brows) so if you’re looking for it you can see it very very faintly if I’m not wearing makeup. But I pencil my brows in daily anyway so it’s not noticeable to anyone else.

AgathaX · 12/01/2026 21:55

I use a home eyebrow dye around once a month. Makes a big difference to them.

CookingFatCat · 12/01/2026 21:58

I use beard dye on my brows and have been using a home made serum of rosemary oil, caffeine from the ordinary and castor oil. Definite improvements in density of my brows.

Okiedokie123 · 12/01/2026 21:58

My advice fwiw is to resist the temptation. Honestly the only eyebrows I ever notice....... are ones that people have "done" something to.
Natural eyebrows...... are a naturally beautiful feature of your face. :)

searchforthesun · 12/01/2026 22:03

You can get microblading lasered off when it goes into a block colour or if you want them redone.
You can have machine stroke brows (Nano) which is semi permanent. It fades more quickly and more naturally. It is generally recommended for oily or older skin.
ive had microblading and was very happy. When they needed redoing I had them lasered off and now have nano brows. I’ve had them 18 months and they haven’t gone ‘blocky’ and don’t seem to need a top up yet.
Look at MK brow academy on Instagram. I think there is a six month wait.

Mottledgrey · 12/01/2026 22:07

I have mine microbladed but I had to have mine done because I have alopecia and all my eyebrows fell out. It has saved me so no regrets but I would kill for my old eyebrows back instead of these not so natural tattooed ones.

Dont do it, natural is best and you will still find you pencil over them anyway!

CortieTat · 12/01/2026 22:41

I think the fact that someone has amazing reviews matters very little, from my experience most of them have and I have also mine done by a reputable professional and a certified trainer at that. She still has solid reviews and her work is very good. I still regret putting a permanent tattoo on my face.

What is more important IMO to consider is the body chemistry and how your body metabolises tattooed dyes. If you have an old tattoo OP you can more or less get a picture of how your tattooed brows are going to fade.

Astra53 · 12/01/2026 22:52

I had my eyebrows ombré shaded. It's a gentler process using micro dots. My brows are still looking good over two years later. It was expensive but worth every penny.

I think this is so true. Lots of their reviews will be from family, friends, people who are influenced by all the reviews....The reviews will be immediately after the process, not after 2 years when they've not weathered well.

Another really good point! I don't have any tattoos so don't have anything to compare it to... I think I'm going to leave microblading for now and maybe commit to getting mine tinted and shaped more regularly in the meantime. Thanks to everyone who replied!

I had mine done and tbh they looked great to start off with but the fade was rapid and I found this really disappointing.
Am now back to filling them in which I hate doing as I think they never match which was the point of the micro blading in the first place.

Turkeytwiz · 13/01/2026 21:40

I had mine done 4 years ago, they still look great and so glad I did. It was painful and annoying that I couldn't get them wet for 2 weeks but I had a fantastic practitioner. However, a friend had a really bad experience and hers have faded.

StasisMom · 13/01/2026 21:43

I’ve had it a few times and would not recommend - they kind of blurred into solid boxes and I hated them so much, I had them removed by a tattoo remover. I’ve been left with scar tissue and I have to draw them on but honestly, they look better!

I’ve been reading about these and they do have lots of good
reviews for being more subtle and natural looking.

Kisskiss · 14/01/2026 01:49

I have microbladed mine 4 years in a row now and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. My real brows are ok in thickness but unfortunate very short tailed..
the first woman who did my brows used an ink that when it started fading was turning from brown to red ..
the lady I go to now, uses organic dyes and they fade lighter rather than change colour.
it honestly saves me sooo much time every morning .. they look natural! My extremely blunt friend told me she thought my brows were natural!

Kisskiss · 14/01/2026 01:50

I slightly prefer nano or microblading to the ombre as I think the hair strokes look more natural.. and the ombre dots is a more made up look
