Walking boots for ice

Hoping to kill two birds with one stone here. Having managed for more than 50 years without ever being a walking boot kind of person, I’m going to need some for a holiday at Easter. I’m hoping that whatever I buy will also give me much better grip on icy pavements than my DMs, which have been proven to be dreadful.

I’ve heard good things about Merrel and about Adudas Terrex (I think). I would prefer them to be black and a bit ‘city’ looking if possible.

Am I asking the impossible? Anyone got experience of anything in these two brands, or indeed anything else.

Thank you.

Okay. Thanks all. It doesn’t look like there’s one pair that will do everything.

Falling on my arse in my DMs is why I started this thread.

I don’t want anything that looks like snow boots.

I put on microspikes over my Blundstones.

If there's ice, boots and shoes will slip. You need something to dig into the ice.

I used to visit family in Chicago and they get ice all freaking winter.

These are walking boots with the OC system. There are other brands available but none are very “ city”.

olang are also worth a look.

I bought these last week and they are very comfortable and have a zip up the side:

ooh I quite like those, thank you.

Being black is the biggest non negotiable. I’ll try to get to see these in real life.

Edited

I have boots with the flip out spikes and actually they are completely useless on sheet ice which I discovered to my detriment this week!

Really? Mine are brilliant. I have had them for 10+ years and only use the spikes a couple of days a year but they are so worth it. Last week I did half a mile to the station (and the same back) on sheet ice without any problem.

I might get some spikes too, thanks, but I’m also hoping to get shoes/boots as described. As long as they’re black, I don’t really care what they look like.

Decathlon do black boots for walking in snow and ice. They’re great, I have some.

Yes. Stepped out onto a ice rink like carpark and nearly went flying. Could I be doing something wrong? It seemed like the spikes were not digging in to ice and were just sliding over it and making things worse 🙃 😕

I don’t think anything is going to help when the ice is like glass.

The strap on spikes I have for my boots are great - but they would just turn into ice skates on ice like that.

I have those, I have two pairs, navy and brown, very comfortable and I particularly like the zips, I went out the other day in the snow and ice and put YakTrax on them.

You can get these in black OP

I bought these from Amazon. They just hook over shoes/boots.

I had a back operations last year and I’m having to do the school runs from this term and I’ve been terrified of falling, but these have been a godsend. £7.99.

Came here to say the same. Had these for years when looking after my horses and never slipped once.

Walking on ice is about technique. Walk from.your knees and keep your feet flat rather than pushing from the balls of your feet. Works for soft sand as well.

With ordinary footwear, its all about luck.

Ice offers no grip regardless of technique.

The slip over spikes are a great idea, have a pair in the car and in the house after falling and knocking my self out a few years ago - thinking i was using the right technique!

I’ve got the Adidas Terrex ones and survived walking round our local area on Saturday, which is the same area as you Remus ;-)

This is super useful to know. I wonder if you are who I think you might be? If so, I hope you and yours are doing well. I am going to start by trying to check out the Adidas and the JS ones below. Thank you.

If you like DMs, I just got a pair of winter grip DMs and they were brilliant on our icy pavements last week.
