Capsule Wardrobe - the 'dressy' items

We moved house just over a year ago and it gave me the kick I needed to well and truly sort out my wardrobe. I now have a pretty good 333 type capsule wardrobe that is working well, but it's just for day to day outfits as that is what I mostly wear.

I rarely go anywhere very fancy, but maybe once every few months I might want a smarter outfit than my normal very casual, and this is what I'd like to get right for my wardrobe. I often end up panic buying something on the day which doesn't work quite right so inevitably ends up in the charity shop after not very long. I'd rather just have a go-to outfit for this kind of thing - I don't mind being seen in the same thing!

I'd like just a few statement pieces - maybe one dress for the warmer months and then maybe a tailored trousers and shirt outfit for winter? Open to ideas though.

I'm pear shaped but fairly petite and like neutral colours and blues. Shoes wise I have tan block heeled ankle boots, tan wedge sandals or nude slingbacks which would hopefully work with whatever smarter outfits I'd end up with!

I'm also wondering about getting some tweed country green trousers - we are farmers so most things we attend in the evenings are farmy! But they could look good with a silk shirt but also be useable in the day time too with a chunky knit or a plain t-shirt...

You may have to ban me from this thread as I am most definitely breaking all capsule wardrobe rules. I’ve bought 2 silk shirts since I first posted about them on here. 😂In my defence, I paid £5 each for them (Vinted) and I know the quality as already have the same 2 shirts in my wardrobe (in fact I wore one of them with the aforementioned velvet trousers to a dinner party only a few days again) before the brand was discontinued, Not very capsule I know but a bargain is a bargain. 😜 (If you’re curious, one is black and one is sage green).

I love The Fold for unusual but classic clothing.

handsdownthebest · 11/01/2026 17:31

I would look at Me&EM and Sezane. Lots of nice trousers and shirts.

I love my tweedy trousers, although they're from Toast so more like an urban dwelling artisan cheesemaker's idea of what country clothing is like. But they're very versatile and dress up and down really well. I agree it can be hard to escape that officey feel with both black and navy trousers.

Sounds like a great bargain Hundred!

I haven't heard of The Fold, going to have a look now!

I love Sezane. Me+Em I find out of budget a lot of the time but I do like their things, maybe for the odd staple here and there it could be worth saving up for

TBF I also find them a bit pricey but they have some good sales and there some good bits to be had on Vinted.

@waitandwonder I love that Sezanne blouse and have wanted to buy it forever. I think that it would be a great addition to a wardrobe.

Before xmas I bought this pair of dark brown matt satin trousers from Cos, https://www.cos.com/en-gb/women/womenswear/trousers/wideleg/product/satin-wide-leg-trousers-dark-brown-1283722002

They're v flattering and easy to wear.

I love it in navy too, I would maybe work up to having both colours one day! I think I could get a lot of wear out of both

Thank you for that link, they have some really nice trousers and jackets on there!
