Funeral help please

I haven't been to a funeral in 10 years and now I have to go to three this month.

I don't know what to wear. Can anyone recommend a cheap outfit? Also my husband doesn't have a black suit, would navy (with a black tie and shoes) be ok? I've had a quick look at basic black suits and they are so expensive.

I don't have any black shoes apart from DMs and I don't like buying cheap clothes but at the same time I can't afford to spend my monthly budget on one outfit! Any advice gratefully received.

The last funeral I went to someone wore a Hawaiian shirt and someone else jeans. I didn't think that was very respectful but people do seem to be a lot more casual now.

I went to one a couple of summers back and the only smart shoes I had were sandals which felt wrong so I wore plain black trainers. I felt bad but honestly nobody noticed - the rest of me was smart.

I think as long as you look as though you have made an effort you will be fine. I hope it all goes as well as it can for you and your DH.

@Stylequestionquick I would definitely go for a coat over a blazer in January/Feb. There is always hanging around. I think blazers look a bit corporate too - like you’re just fitting in a funeral during your busy work day. I’m a fan of coats for most of the temperate year.

Also ask friends if there is anything you can borrow. In my group of friends we have a smart coat we all borrow for funerals.

I went to a neighbour’s funeral, and they were all wearing brightly coloured clothes, including Hawaiian shirts. I found out later that it was the deceased’s wish, but no one informed me us!
wearing black isn’t a rule these days anyway.

@Allseeingallknowing yes I've been to ones where that's been specified but this wasn't!
