Quality knitwear that doesn’t age me?!

New Year, updated wardrobe - I’m trying to buy quality over quantity. I realised that there was a big gap in my wardrobe when it comes to knitwear, so purchased some knitwear from Woolovers. It’s arrived and ages me about 20 years! (I’m late 30s.)

Please could you lovely people share some ideas for stylish, good quality knitwear? Thank you!

I know what you mean re Woolovers. I've ordered a few things from them in the past and the cut has always been on the old fashioned side of classic. I ended up sending them back because of it. Necklines slight too high/narrow, jumpers too short in the body and the cut was too fitted to the body. Even sizing up wouldn't make a difference because the cut was all wrong. Even M&S have better cashmere & merino basics.

Benetton is still good. Nice colours, too.

Woolovers are very much a "classic knitwear" company, and that's their niche. Fine if you are after a basic round neck jumper, and it's good quality, but you are never going to find on-trend shapes and styles, as it's not what their demographic are looking for.

I've had a couple of excellent purchases from M&S Autograph recently. I usually swerve most High Street knitwear, as I can't bear all the polyester, but these are all merino/lambswool/cashmere, and gorgeous shape/detail.

Im 51 and im into quirky/statement knitwear of late. Hope Macauley is amazing, but also Slow Love. I just bought this jumper. It looks awesome with black jeans, or black mini with black docs. It wont be for everyone though. The Young Hearts Jumper - Black – The Slow Love

Try Finisterre.

I've looked at Woolovers and thought 'Oh, no, not for me.' and I'm in my 60s.

I think woolovers is old lady and I’m 67. My sister and I had the exact same conversation about the very fine line between frumpy and nice knits and we think it’s a lot about the fit across the top of the chest, between shoulder and armpit. Slightly wrong there and it’s a disaster. Personally I think V necks are tricky, I like them wide I think, but despite being quite busty I don’t often go there. This winter I’ve had a couple of nice cashmere sweaters from Me &Em but sent 2 back to Brora which often don’t fit me to my liking, especially the dual size ones. There used to be a fine merino one in Celtic that I liked a lot with a slightly rolled up edge at the neck and wrist, but only the plain colours. I think they still do it. Poetry sometimes, although not a great colour choice for me usually, and the oversized roll neck cashmere one in whistles is nice but long. My sister gets on well with the M&S merino crew neck in quite a neat fit.

I love Rise and Fall. A bit expensive but definitely worth it.

I have two Navygrey lambswool sweaters. They were an investment, but I wear them constantly in the winter. So warm, and thick without being bulky. I like the Easy shape, which is boxy but not oversized and suits me better than the ‘borrowed it from my boyfriend’ styles that they tend to feature in their publicity. I love the style of those but they’re too long for me. I wear each of them at least once a week

I also love Cos cashmere, and Arket do a range of simple alpaca and wool jumpers that are lovely and a much more accessible in oricecoií

i’m always looking for sweaters with very relaxed ribbing at the bottom. If that band is very tight I think it can look a bit old fashioned

Edinburgh Woollen Mill has some nice cardies and jumpers.
I love cardies ! Especially in this weather.

I think fashion is really interesting in that sometimes a piece just feels wrong but you can’t exactly say why, but yes Woollvers for example is very classic and not at all fashion and it shows….

I love boho style and Free People somehow always looks cool for boho, but is silly expensive but I buy their cashmere jumpers on Vinted. but boho is probably not exactly fashionable either now it’s just the style I like 😁

also have a cool merino knit from Wrap that works well with horseshoe or barrel jeans

Rumpledandcrumpled · 31/01/2026 07:50

Hmm, you say quality but woolovers isn’t a high price point and with knitwear you get what you pay for. It’s fine for basic everyday but it’s quite dated in many of its pieces.

for me, me and em do knitwear that’s both modern and quality, if the price point is too high, you can search on vinted too.

In your shoes I’d start with Uniqlo and go from there.

I also buy M&S men’s jumpers.

There is tons of good stuff on EBay and Vinted but you need to get your eye in and understand your preferred fit first.
