Dyson airwrap - help - what am I doing wrong?

Springisintheairohyeah · 06/01/2026 13:24

I treated myself to a Dyson airwrap thinking it would help me look more "put together" quickly, but I'm clearly just not getting it. Does anyone have any airwrap tips - techniques, products, anything to help me feel like I might at least get a return on investment, as it's the most I've ever spent on hair stuff!

The blow dry attachment doesn't seem to work any better than my normal hair dryer, the curly/wrap around attachment seems to need really small sections (so takes ages), the heated round brush leaves my fair frizzy, and none of it seems to hold. I was hoping for a Kate Middleton-esque blow dried mane, but I'm just ending up looking like I've done nothing. My hair is long, layered and wavy (but not especially fine or thick), with long ish curtain bangs. The only thing I can usually manage is to rough dry it then run my straighteners through it - so that's the level of competence we're starting with!

Me: very fine flat peri-meno hair, the only thing that works with the Dyson on me, is rough dry, then the hot brush in sections and immediately Velcro rollers in for quite a few hours - looks fab but it's a long process. I use Color Wow products.

Daughter: gorgeous thick long hair, she rough dries then uses the large barrel wand thing and she looks like she has stepped out of the salon - I'm not jealous at all Grin

Velcro rollers sounds like it would work but just don't have the patience (or fine motor skills!). I'm also peri meno - maybe need to accept defeat and that I'm never again going to have the luscious locks of a 25 year old :-(

I’m going to squat on your thread OP, because I’m in the same position of having one and not having a clue how to use it

There are a lot of videos on youtube showing how to use the airwrap on various lengths of hair that you might find very helpful.

I had one on trial and sent it back, as one of the main things I learned was to manage my expectations - the hairdryer attachment isn’t meant to be as ‘good’ as a normal hairdryer, its really just like a cheap travel dryer, the hot air brush is the same as any other and the wands, as you found, only really worked on small sections and didn’t work as well as a traditional hot rod although if its true they don’t damage the hair as much it might be worth the switch.

If you can return it I would, I see the price has come down recently but its still too much for what it is. It might be worth it if you travel a lot and need a multi styler every day but for home, nah.

It dried my hair out so much I had to stop using it.

This is what I feel - I'd read that they are meant to reduce heat damage but I feel like the overall condition of my hair has got worse and I'm seeing more frizz since I've been using it frequently

How long is your hair? Mine is quite long and thick and I love my airwrap

I rough dry it to about 90%. ( using my usual hairdryer as the airwrap itself does take a while to rough dry) I then use the 20mm barrels to curl it ( I purchased the 20mm barrels separately and I find they work better than the larger ones)

I use quite small sections and it does take about 45 mins from wet to dry, once it is dry I run a small amount of oil through to break up the curls and I’m done.

The most important thing is to make sure you use the cool shot feature before you release the curl.

The curls last about 5 days with very very minimal maintenance in between.

For me it is worth the 45 minute effort to have curls for 5 days.

I think it does very much depend on your hair type though and if your hair doesn’t hold a curl with other methods you may find your struggle.

My very very lovely hairdresser says I walk into the salon with my hair looking the way most peoples hair look when they leave ( I’m sure she is just being very kind) however she has hair of a similar length and can’t get the results I can.

My hair has always held a curl well though even when I was young.

I use a leave in conditioner.

It can take several attempts to work out the best way to use it but I would recommend the smaller barrels if you don’t already have them.

Good luck

Can recommend the Dyson Airstraight if you want straight or slightly flicked styles.
I can manage that but lacked the skills to manage any sort of style with the Airwrap.
And it dries very quickly.

I have chin length hair, no motor skills and it takes me about 15 minutes to get amazing hair with my Airwrap - people are always complimenting me (I was quoted about this on a MN Swears By email). It's been lifechanging.

But my attempts at a Kate Middleton flick at the end haven't been successful so if that's what you want I can't help

Off the top of my head - ideally air dry to 80 %, the airwrap dryer is useless so I use another dryer if need to dry quicker
After this add some styling product, I tend to use Ouai curl creme (but I want curls)
Quickly but making sure hair - doesn't entirely dry - run through the hot hard brush, not the round one to smooth hair
Section a chunk at the top of your head then start on the layers below, use a smaller rod (you can buy them on ebay or vinted if you don't already have some).
Hold hot for 10 seconds, then switch to cold for 10 seconds
Once you've done the lower layer, take out the section clip and do the top layer
Once you're done loosely brush out curls, that should get rid of frizz
Finish with hairspray

It does take several goes to master it, I probably needed three months to be a complete pro but it's worth it!
