How to look “polished”

Turdissimo · 05/01/2026 21:24

Some folk seem to look good all the time. Why is this? Do you think they always feel good too or would they look good even on a bad day?

Do you have to be thin (or at least not v overweight) for the look (whatever the look is) to work?

Can you wear cheap clothes / accessories if they are classic styles etc?

Can you be casual and polished at the same time?

PS would add I have tried to copy styling gurus etc on YouTube and just ended up buying items which didn’t suit me or feel like me.

Bemused. I want to look more put together..

I think a big reason why people tend not to look as polished when overweight is because of the way you feel about yourself. I’m still carrying a bit extra but I’ve been a lot bigger and I just don’t feel like making the effort on myself when I hate the way I look. When I’m feeling good in my clothes, I tend to make more effort with my overall appearance but at times when I’ve been really overweight it’s like I don’t see the point or don’t think im worth it. I think this is fairly common.

I blow dry my hair, always wear make up, always have ironed clothes, but still usually feel like a right clip compared to proper ladies 😅 I work in a factory environment so am always in a fleece and black jeans, but have still managed to attract the attention of a couple of men I work with, which is a bit mystifying

I'm overweight and disagree. I often feel like a size 8 and amazing in my head and then look in the mirror and can't believe it's the same person. Clothes usually sit much better on a 'rectangle' tall slim person than an apple or pear. If you are short and fat it's even worse.

CherryCookies · 11/01/2026 22:46

Gosh I hope nobody fat and short is reading this thread, brutally negative comments. You could've easily stopped at 'it helps to be tall and slim'.
Anyway, I always thought Poirot looked polished and he's short and portly (aware it was a padded suit but still mon ami)

I'm short and fat, and yes, it is brutal. Another poster said the same. Are we not allowed to have an opinion? If someone is going to be impacted so badly by online comments, they should avoid reading the internet.

Regardless of shape or size, fit matters and really matters.

When I was a little girl (60 years ago) grandma and mother tried on item after item, found what they liked and there was always a fitter on hand with pins on the back of her hand who made a garment flattter and fit perfectly, a dart here or there, a seam taken in. Nothing was ever tight, everything hung perfectly.

And this is why I rarely buy clothes online. I shop for clothes in real shops. I take several sizes of clothes into changing rooms and try them all on. It's much less of a faff than ordering online and returning, especially for footwear and jeans.

I genuinely don't know what 'polished ' is and I wish @Turdissimo would come back to reply to the hundreds of posts !

I think polished it the opposite to scruffy.
If she means 'stylish' that is different and doesn't simply mean wearing high fashion.

I see lots of women I'd consider 'scruffy' mainly because of unkempt hair.
Black roots, looks like it's never been cut for months, poor condition.
So even in a designer outfit they'd look scruffy.

Polished is not wearing fashion- it means everything is squeaky clean, neat, fits, subtle make up, clean nails , hair is washed and well cut, sometimes a bit of subtle jewellery.

@normanagfriendsthats great for you that you feel amazing in your head but I dont think most overweight people feel that way. If anything, I think we think we look a lot ‘worse’ for want of a better word than what we do. People are normally their own harshest critics and much more hung up on the way they look and their perceived imperfections than other people

AnonymousBleep · 12/01/2026 09:30

Apparently I look ‘put together’ although I don’t feel like it most of the time!

I’d say it’s knowing what suits you in terms of style and colour, making sure your roots are done, having good skin and wearing enough makeup to brighten your face. I don’t spend loads on clothes but lots of my stuff are good brands I’ve got off Vinted! Not sure whether weight matters. I’m also not a fan of garish nails and think pointy acrylics make people look less put together. Ditto lots of obvious cosmetic tweakments as I find myself looking at those rather than the person! Just my opinion.

unpcplod · 12/01/2026 09:33

And I completely agree that Mollie Campsie is a bigger girl who always looks fantastic. She takes pride in her appearance- always hair blow dried, make up, tailored clothes.

Eyebrows, I always find having my eyebrows threaded makes me instantly more put together

Older women need to put their eyebrows back! I spend £££ on Rapidbrow, applying it 2 x a day to get mine to grow.

I just keep on top of mine by plucking them regularly.

Speaking as an older woman; it depends!

I have to beat my eyebrows back with a hedge trimmer nowadays in case they create join up with the hair sprouting out of my top lip and chin!

Having said that, I do think you need to be very careful with brows that they match your hair colour. I don’t know why hair salons don’t offer to do both?

Dare I say I think Trinny’s brows for example are a bit too dark atm.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/01/2026 16:10

Yeah you can’t be short AND fat. I did not look polished like that. Every pound showed, even when I was a size 10-12 it was so hard to look good. My bmi was 25-26 at a size 10.

Now I’m short and a size 6 (bmi 21) I can look polished so much more easily as I’m basically a short clothes hanger. Literally I can look at a hanger in a shop and know immediately how it will look.
