What's the vibe for jury duty

Anyone with experience can you give me and idea of what's sensible to wear - for reference I am currently small 18/16 but on MJ so potentially a bit smaller by the time it comes around but will still definitely be winter attire. Big boobs and tummy and I'm 5ft 2.

Layers.

If you take a flask of soup they can ask you to open it up.

Just simple smartish casual, no low cut tops or anything else that might distract attention. I wouldn’t wear any over-bright colours, either. (Yes, I’ve done jury service.)

I'm a similar size, have done jury service twice in a traditional courthouse and had zero problems with any of those things, literally no issue at all.

I agree with comfy, layers and nondescript, you do see defendants and witnesses outside quite often and don't really want to be noticeable to them.

Traditional or actually 18th century?

I'm a size 10 and struggled. I genuinely cannot understand how someone who is size 18 could even squeeze themselves in, let alone sit there for hours and days on end.

Comfortable and nondescript. Personally I would rather defendants don't notice me too much.

This was exactly my approach especially as you sometimes saw the defendents at lunchtime and jn the morning.

I'm thinking maybe a navy comfy co ord set that's nice and soft with some layers underneath. The court is reasonably modern I believe so hopefully not too restrictive and uncomfortable.

Thank you for the replies I do appreciate them. I am a little apprehensive about seeing people out and about from the court setting so blending in was definitely what I'm looking to do

Something comfy, there is a lot of waiting around and you may not get allocated to a trial. Bring a good book or your laptop to keep occupied. They had lockers so if you do get picked you can store your things.

I agree with bringing a book or downloading a few films but take care not to have your headphones on to loud or you may miss been called.
We didn't have lockers , we had to lug everything around with us which was a pain .
As for dress code like pp said smart casual, layers that can be removed as the temperature in each court can vary a lot.

Beautitul · 05/01/2026 15:09

It's probably obvious but I have been caught when I wore a jumper with a base layer underneath that was too embarrassing to take off the jumper and stay in so whatever you layer make sure it's appropriate and suitable for public eyes or you risk overheating. Some of my thermals are thin and become see through showing my bra underneath specially if light isn't bright when you got dressed to notice you can be caught out.
I like ponchos (the plain thin types) and scarves for easy tempreture regulation.

Dont forget your eyeglasses!

@McHotah ok gotcha. I’m still chuckling at the fact they felt the need to specify no beachwear.

I once worked for an office that said ‘no ballgowns’ in the staff dress code. Made me chuckle and wonder who wore a ballgown to the office for that specific rule to be added.

Yes when you go in you have to go through a metal detector and have to empty your pockets. They made me take everything out of my very full bag so don't do what I did and take everything with you. After the first day I went to the local shop for a meal deal. You get an hour for lunch. If you take a drink you have to sip it in front of them.
