Clothes for Scotland in February

Sigil · 04/01/2026 12:01

I’m going to Scotland to visit family and friends for most of February and don’t know what to wear! I live in a warmer climate with a very casual vibe so I’m out of touch with winter wear.

Would love suggestions for shops/sites I can browse for inspiration or any ideas for key things to buy or take. I’ve got a few wool jumpers stashed away plus a couple of coats, but I’ve not worn jeans for about a year and boots for even longer. I don’t care about being super trendy but would prefer to look more current then dated.

Any ideas for key colours/shapes/styles please, especially bottoms and footwear?

edit to add: I’ll not need anything very fancy but will undoubtedly have some meals out/ go out for drinks. Daytime will be mostly hanging out with friends/relatives or maybe meeting friends to wander round the shops or similar.

Good advice from @GlasgowGal2014 . 👍

Slightly cropped trousers, otherwise you could end up sodden from the knees down due to hems dragging on waterlogged pavements.

Otherwise, is hard to recommend specific edinburgh style!

Mildorado · 04/01/2026 16:21

Some young men favour kilts, boots and rugby shirts, so you could always do that!

Unless you are heading up north and climbing hills you won't need thermals! Up until this cold spell I wasn't wearing a jacket to go out and about in town. Warm coat, warm jumper, jeans, boots are standard necessities. Enjoy Edinburgh, its a great city to explore by foot so prepare for plenty of walking

SirChenjins · 04/01/2026 17:08

I live in Edinburgh - it can feel cold snd damp here. Chunky pull on boots, warm wide leg trousers, thermals or fleece lined tights underneath, cropped jumpers with thermals, big wool or puffer coat, beanie or pom pom hat, big scarf. You could kit yourself out entirely from Uniqlo and would look completely in place!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 04/01/2026 17:10

Barrel leg trousers or jeans that are slightly cropped are good with boots and trainers. Avoid smooth soled boots though in case it’s icy. Jumpers layered with T-shirts or shirts perfect for this time of year. A warm coat with a hood (umbrellas can be a complete waste of time if it’s windy). Uniqlo is a good shout and there’s a large one on princes street. I live in Edinburgh and don’t need thermals day to day, but, as you’re not used to a colder climate you might benefit from them. Uniqlo heattech range is good for this (heattech socks too). Warm hat, gloves and scarf also essential. Could be wet and mild, stormy, or baltic in February.

I’m in Aberdeen where we currently have about eight inches of snow - I think thermal layers might be a lot/too warm if you are in and out of places as opposed to solidly outdoors. Today I’ve been out in barrel jeans (quite heavy denim ones admittedly, from Abercrombie) with a t-shirt under a cashmere mix jumper, DM boots, and a long down puffer coat (from Arket, not a techy outdoor one) and I was boiling in the shops! I run cold and get massively overstimulated by high necks and scarves, but did wear a scarf today, otherwise it was just my regular clothes. Our schools are closed tomorrow because of weather so it’s really, properly cold here right now.

My top tip is waterproof gloves rather than woolly ones, because cold wet hands are really utterly miserable.

I live in edinburgh.
jeans, biker style boots, trainers, T-shirts, sunglasses, jumpers, cardigans ( and a few nice tops if going out).
sunglasses, puffa coat, hat, gloves, scarf, slippers.

Sigil · 04/01/2026 21:01

Thanks everyone. Sounds like chunky/ Chelsea or biker type boots or DMs will be the go. Anyone got any links to favourite ones I can look at?

I was wondering about wide legged trousers with the rain so slightly cropped sounds better. Again, any links or images would be appreciated.

I never wore thermals when living in Scotland but I am definitely unused to the cold now so will chuck mine in my case. They’re silk so very thin and won’t take up any luggage room even if I don’t need them. Fleece-lined trousers aren’t something I’ve ever had so intrigued to look at these.

Waterproof gloves is a good call; I only have wool or leather. I take tthin gloves even in summer as I get very cold hands

Yeah I wouldn't worry about being stylish, most people in Scotland dress like they are about to head up a Munro. North Face, walking boots, uniqlo layers, etc. and you will fit right in. Warm and waterproof layers as well. Speaking as a Scot who lives in France now.

Blahblahmama1 · 05/01/2026 01:24

I live in Edinburgh. It’s thermals everyday (both long sleeved tops and leggings) everyday from September to May.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 05/01/2026 01:25

It’s very windy so wind proof things

Thanks; will be around Edinburgh. I’m expecting cold and wet - more looking for ideas of what’s a little bit stylish so I don’t look completely out of date!

Edinburgh can be much colder than you'd expect. Make sure you have a pair of warm gloves and a warm coat.

I agree with RLS:

"But Edinburgh pays cruelly for her high seat in one of the vilest climates under heaven. She is liable to be beaten upon by all the winds that blow, to be drenched with rain, to be buried in cold sea fogs out of the east, and powdered with the snow as it comes flying southward from the Highland hills. The weather is raw and boisterous in winter, shifty and ungenial in summer, and a downright meteorological purgatory in the spring."

Just adding my vote for the thermals! I wear thermal tops and bottoms under everything in the winter, in Edinburgh, so toasty. I do feel the cold though, and also wear baggy jeans that let the draft in.

Beautifully put, although now I am slightly more dreading going into Edinburgh town for work tomorrow 😂

I swear that I freeze any time I go into Edinburgh. You'd think that Princes Street wouldn't be any colder than Fife, but by Gum...
