Should I leave a review about this? Unprofessional hairdresser

I think it was unprofessional, anyway. I've attached a pic but it might take a while to upload so I'll explain it quickly. If the image looks a little funky it's because I had to splice the texts together.

I booked a new client appointment on the 27th December and my appointment was for late January. It was booked through Vagaro, an online booking system separate to the salon itself. The hairdresser texted me today to say prices had increased and I'd be paying more, despite my booking being accepted in late December. She mentions she'll see what she can do if it's out of my budget. I push back saying I think the original price should be honoured and that I can't currently afford the new price. I am told everyone will be subjected to the new pricing system. She offers a refund, I accept.

I thought it was unprofessional and it left me feeling put out. The principle of it doesn't sit right with me and I don't think it was good customer service. I know a lot of you might tell me to forget about it and move on!

I would normally leave a review but they've just rebranded/opened a new business in the same building (the previous owner moved). I suppose it feels a bit mean to leave a bad review since it's technically a new business.

Keen to hear opinions, I've not done anything yet. If I did leave a review it'd be after getting my deposit back.

For what it's worth, it's a curl friendly salon so not as easy to find.

The price you booked at should definitely be honoured. Yes she sounds polite, but to increase prices for pre-booked treatments is chaotic. I wouldn’t write a review, but I wouldn’t use her again.

PluckyChancer · 04/01/2026 11:39

It’s a tricky one as you’d already paid money to her via the booking system, so effectively you have a contract with her and therefore, I think she should have honoured the agreed price.

However, she’s refunded you without any bother and you need to think about why you want to leave a negative review when most people looking at salon reviews are only interested in reviews mentioning the quality of the work?

Totally agree. You can be unfailingly polite but totally unreasonable at the same time.

BreakfastClubBlues · 04/01/2026 11:59

I think it's reasonable to leave a negative review.

As a potential customer, I would want to know that when booking with this hairdresser there is a possibility that they may crank the price up after booking and paying a deposit.

As a matter of law, no, they couldn't raise their prices from the one they originally agreed to charge.

Really? It's best practice to inform customers of price increases - as was done.

If there was a contract or agreement set out with the service user regarding the price at time of booking, then yes. Otherwise it's perfectly reasonable for a business to increase their prices at any given time.

Winederlust · 04/01/2026 12:06

I get why you're annoyed but I don't think what she's done is unprofessional, in fact it's pretty standard practice and she's been polite in her responses to you.
When someone puts their prices up there has to be a cut off point somewhere and with hairdressing people often book appointments weeks in advance. She can't be expected to honour all bookings no matter how far ahead they're booked.

I think what's also bothering me is that she said she'd see what she could do if it was out of my budget! Only for there to be no compromise at all. Should I have suggested a compromise? I'm not the business so I don't think so.

Just venting, still taking in the comments :)

I read the 'I'll see what I can do' as she'd be happy to refund you the deposit, which I would assume is usually non-refundable?

JahanaraBegum · 04/01/2026 12:21

She should have honoured the price. It is annoying but she was polite in the messages and gave the refund though so I wouldnt leave a bad review. She has done herselfout of a probable repeat customer!

The deposit absolutely secures the cost. How would you feel if you had, say, agreed a price for a piece of work at your home and paid a deposit, and they suddenly told you the price had doubled? Why should hairdressers be any different?

For context I pay a £1 deposit for my appointment (online) which gets deducted when I pay - that is the same for whatever stylist i go to. Some are £45, others £70, top guys are £90. I can change my choice of stylist, the price reflects that.

Tradesmen and services do this all the time - you are lucky if you have not had to deal with this.

Also the price went up 15%, rather than double, under new management. Really not a huge amount.

Arlanymor · 05/01/2026 10:19

People equating this to ordering a new kitchen (!) and being 'inconvenienced just before they return to work and want their hair done' (appointment is for three weeks' time at least!)

She was polite, she wanted to try and meet you in the middle, you said no you wanted your money back and she gave it to you.

Non event isn't it? I hate when I see reviews online that start: "Well I never actually used their service but ONE star because... blah..."
