Clothes (and other tips) for coping with broken arm

Nyeaccident · 02/01/2026 18:50

I have broken my dominant arm. Likely to be in plaster at least 2 months.
I can WFH but will need to look vaguely presentable
Would welcome tips on clothes and coping.
Sorry for minimal msg, typing is tiring!

Good luck I was 2 months in a sling non dominant arm. You will need help dressing, eating etc. just be kind to yourself with dress. There are other things which are going to be so much harder

Thanks yeah I guess I figure if I can get some easy clothes to wear that's a start at least

Clothes thst you can step into are good so for example oversize vest top that you can shimmy up. Wrap dress with wide sleeve openings.

For looking presentable I got a couple of shaped shawls, like ponchos but open in front which looked nice on teams if you need a sling use a lightweight pashmina or scarf. Red lipstick always makes me look put together on teams.

Trousers with an elasticated waist.
Slip-on footwear.

My daughter broke her wrist and had half her arm up to her elbow in a cast but didn’t have to have it in a sling which helped. Due to the type of fracture she could only minimally move her thumb but I was astounded at her resiliance and how good she got using her left hand! To the extent she now does things with her left hand she never used to do! She had to type rather than write of course. How much if you arm is in a cast?

I relative broke her dominant arm fairly recently. She mentioned going to the loo being tricky. I ordered some joggers immediately with next day delivery.

Am in PJ's today as in a lot of pain and yes I think joggers make sense

Something not too tight and with stretch. (Sorry if mentioning the loo was TMI but we go several times in a day.)

RosesAndHellebores · 02/01/2026 20:14

I ordered a plain poncho which was a godsend.
Bralets I could step into and pull up
It was summer so easier but i imagine in winter, rugby shirt styles and blouses where you can open the cuff for the bad arm.
I still have my school cape which would have been a godsend had it been winter, so vinted cape?
Leggings which are easy to pull up and no buttons.

Get well soon x

Bougainsillier · 02/01/2026 20:19

Shirts and blouses. Cardigans. Plastered arm in first and out last.
A poncho or two would be handy.

drspouse · 02/01/2026 20:21

Front fastening bras.
Button front tops.
Elastic waist trousers.
BTDT got the t-shirt!
Edit actually not the t-shirt, the blouse!

user2207 · 02/01/2026 20:28

Yes to elasticated waste trousers.
Depending on how arm should be immobilised - i had my arm in a sling - either vests which are easy to put on because they stretch well or something with buttons in front
Warm poncho style cover with the front button was essential when it was cold.
Also stretchy bra or front fastening bra.
One of the uniqlo cardigans was so comfortable too - wide, with wide sleeves and two large buttons in front.

Watto1 · 02/01/2026 20:47

Bad arm ‘in’ first. It will seem odd if that’s not the usual arm you put in first but it makes things easier. You will have to do your bra up at the front and move it around. Cardigans are easier than jumpers and the looser, the better.

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 02/01/2026 21:03

If it’s not the elbow, you’ll be surprised how ‘fine’ things feel after the first two weeks. The cast gives it so much support once the first pain has gone that I could do pretty much everything (fingers were mostly out of cast)
really it was only finding wide arm holes. I’d try and get to a charity shop with someone to maybe find a larger coat temporarily in this cold weather.

SliceofTosst · 02/01/2026 21:41

Poncho.
