Where are you buying your basics?

I've realised that the basics in my wardrobe (single coloured t-shirts, vest tops, long sleeved bodysuits etc) are all either crap quality, badly fitting, or so old they have tiny holes in the sleeves, so I need to replace them, which is fine. BUT I'm struggling to find somewhere I can a bulk order of quality, well fitting basics in a variety of colours.

M & S seem to do decent vest tops, to be fair, I bought a couple in the summer so may go there to replace my other knackered vest tops, but v neck tshirts and bodysuits, where is good for those?

M&S, H&M and Zara are my go to for plain basics, but I pay attention to the material and only buy the natural fibres (sometimes they have sneaky blends or polyester!). They’ve lasted well for me, no complaints.

WonderingAboutBabies · 02/01/2026 11:43

Uniqlo!

tarheelbaby · 02/01/2026 11:58

I buy from H&M, Gap, Lands End and Boden (can be pricey but there are sales and often they do a t with a nice trim which adds some extra polish to an every day outfit.

If I'm not in work clothes, I wear a cotton t-shirt, usually V necked. I mainly buy natural fibres: cotton or linen and try to avoid blends with polyester or rayon.

Next for the very basic stuff, Uniqlo for better but still basic

Odd bit from H&M too

I just discovered Skims via the young people in my work. Whatever you think about Kim Kardashian, the materials and cut of her basics are immpecable and very flattering. Almost every item has thousands of 5 star reviews.

Next.
They have a range called the set which is great for plain basics. If you look in their clearance online, they often have them in.

Thank you everyone for suggestions, I knew I could rely on this forum to know the answer here! Off to do some shopping!

Community clothing quality is superb

suburburban · 02/01/2026 17:41

Seasalt cotton tops are reasonable

CoastOfXmasPast · 02/01/2026 17:52

Cos for v neck t shirts. Ribbed vest - Next Premium, John Lewis or H&M.

Cantonet · 02/01/2026 20:46

Muji warm cotton ( 100% cotton) long sleeve scoop neck t shirts for layering underneath knitwear. I have the thinner ones & I've just ordered a couple of the thicker variety.
M&S Autograph & Jaeger have pure cotton v neck t shirts on the M&S website.
I'm still looking for deep scoop neck t shirts in cotton like my ancient J Crew ones. No one seems to do ones without elastane or synthetic mixes any more.

following a thread on here, I got stuff from Uniqlo and I'm so pleased with it! Very reasonably priced too.

HM2024 · 02/01/2026 21:13

I've bought a few things from Yes Friends are the quality is fantastic, they're reasonably priced and they are ethical and transparent (which is very hard to find!).

They have loads of lovely basics in a variety of colours...

Thank you so much for this recommendation! I’m due back at work from Mat leave in Feb and desperately needed new clothes at a reasonable price! 🙏🏼

Skims, uniglo, cos and Arket are my favourite for basic pieces.

Goldbar31 · 04/01/2026 16:36

Uniqlo, Massimo Dutti (sale), h&m, and Next for basics like 100 cotton tops, jeans, and merino wool roll necks/jumpers.

TK Maxx is really good for suede boots, leather bags & shoes, and cashmere.

Goldbar31 · 04/01/2026 16:37

Oh, also, New Look actually do lovely tops and 100% cotton bodysuits.
