Before I get flamed, it’s literally my only time out as I wfh. It’s a 45min walk home. Just curious what people wear? I wear trainers and a duffel coat but I’d like to revamp my style a bit

Oh, and I have to wear trainers so no movement there!

Mine is only a 5 minute walk so I usually wear boots or trainers, jeans, sweatshirt and an appropriate coat - rain or winter. I can’t say I’ve ever put much thought into it.

ZenNudist · 02/01/2026 09:38

Just don't wear Pyjamas or a Onesie or evening attire or ski gear. Any normal outfit will do.

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 09:41

Whatever I’m wearing for the day, I wouldn’t change for it. On my days off I walk so in December it’s been joggers of some sort, knit jumper or sweater, trainers, puffa coat, hat etc.

Purlant · 02/01/2026 09:43

Depends on the weather. 45mins is a decent walk, so at this time of year a warm coat would be vital. Do you tend to walk briskly? Leggings or other workout gear could be a comfortable option, you could even combine with a jog?!

LeftoversAgain · 02/01/2026 09:47

Sorry, I should add that ideally I dont want to change when home as I wfh but often do calls.

Just wear want you want, it's the school run why waste energy overthinking such a non-event?

Iloveshihtzus · 02/01/2026 10:47

OP,

I get it - you would like to look a little more out together - so you posted in Style and Beauty. But the usual ‘no one cares’ have stepped in to make you feel bad. Here is my advice:

Have options for different weather. I had 3 options for rain; dry: icy cold.

In rain I wore nice jeans, turned up; short thick soled wellies (very comfy to walk in); and a ‘Rains’ raincoat. Many mums asked me where I bought my coat and wellies.

Get a more stylish coat ; upgrade it; you still need practical but look at Instagram or around you to see more stylish options.

I wore a very stylish puffer coat with jeans (coat and jeans both dark navy) and coloured trainers (orange) and a cashmere scarf (either a bright colour or grey or blue) in cold weather.

Do Not Wear Black - it always look as if you have no idea what to wear. Try to get your colours done and then invest in your coat and jackets in those colours - are you autumnal that suits brown/green; are you spring that suits charcoal grey?

Hope these ideas help.

I just wear whatever I need to wear after with a big coat over the top and flat boots. If I'm working from home that's often leggings and a knitted jumper with layers underneath. I pay no attention to what anyone wears on the school run. I did drop off on the way to court recently (work) so was in a suit and got a few comments from the mums I know, but largely along the lines of are you interviewing or firing today! Even on office days I'm more likely to be in a dress and boots than a suit.

One of my friends does this, drops off then does a run the long way home before starting work

@Iloveshihtzus, I’m very interested in your stylish puffer coat and would love a link to the wellies you mention, please? 🙏🏻

Same here!

Iloveshihtzus · 02/01/2026 11:58

@MadameSapphire thank you.

The puffer is from Superdry - the reason it is stylish is because it fits me perfectly - I’m petite so not easy to find a long puffer that actually fits my height and arm length.

The wellies are a real find. I’m not sure that you can get these in the UK although they have an online store. They are from Dunnes Stores - Irish chain store. And they were €15!!!!

However, I have googled and you can get very similar in George at Asda for £15. Just Google thick soled Chelsea boot wellies.

Mine are black.

By turning up straight leg jeans to reveal the wellies, you protect your jeans from rain and make your outfit more stylish. Look at Jonathan Anderson at Loewe last season jeans to get the idea.

Can you wear a knit for calls? Presumably you mean video calls?

carpetfluffs · 02/01/2026 12:08

One of the best investments is in your coat wardrobe. We are in them so much & it’s often the main part of one’s “outfit” on show. I think a lot of people see outerwear as an afterthought.

@Iloveshihtzus thank you so much for your advice - fab advice. I would also like a better looking puffer jacket. I have a very puffy warm one but its not exactly stylish. I have chelsea boots but of course use these for going out out!

And ive made the mistake with just black and thats excellent advice

I have a long barbour jacket that is extremely warm, but I don’t have to look like a football manager in one of those black puffers.

Also UGG boots do ankle boots that don’t look like UGG boots, but have sheepskin lining & are our exceptionally comfortable and warm.

I work from home too, and I’ve tried various brands of jeggings so they tuck into the boots, but came to the conclusion it’s just gonna have to be rolled up jeans, because there’s something a bit naff about jeggings when you’re trying to look smart.

OhMaria2 · 02/01/2026 18:55

@Iloveshihtzus where did you get your colours done? I'd love to do this.

Iloveshihtzus · 02/01/2026 23:58

@OhMaria2
I got my colours done many many years ago!!! In Dublin. But apparently it is really popular again now so if you Google you should find some place. It is so worth it - not to be 100% devoted to, but I will never spend a lot of money on something that is not one of my colours. It saves expensive mistakes. Of course your color palette also contains loads of colours you might hate (I hate half of mine) but I only wear the ones I love and that suit my lifestyle -loads of charcoal grey; ice grey; navy and pale blue. Then I add little pops of the colours that I can only take in small doses.

OhMaria2 · 03/01/2026 01:24

Thank you for your reply @Iloveshihtzus, I definitely think its something I will end up doing. I'm so tired of thinking ill look nice in something only to look washed out

BlackCat14 · 03/01/2026 09:19

I’m a fast walker and often don’t wear a big coat when I go out for a walk, unless it’s absolutely freezing! I’m currently on mat leave and do a two-ish hour walk a day with the pram, and my uniform is a nice stylish matching hat and scarf, a thick chunky knit and leggings.

LeftoversAgain · 21/01/2026 02:59

What sort of bags would work?

Still trying to find a nice coat but also not wanting to wear my lovely car coats on the school run!

OP posts:
Twilightstarbright · 21/01/2026 06:07

I think I get you- you want to look nice day to day but your current lifestyle means the main thing taking you outside is the school run?

I completely agree with PP on coats, I’ve invested in them and it’s paid off. I have a big north face coat but it’s in a red shade that’s one of my colours so it looks more interesting and flattering than if it were black. It’s still practical as ultimately I’m standing pitch side in all weathers but it makes a difference to how I look and feel.

Brushed hair and groomed eyebrows make a big difference too. I don’t always wear make up when wfh but I make sure these are covered.

noramoo · 22/01/2026 15:17

I agree with everyone saying a nice coat. Something a bit more elevated than a standard back puffer. Another suggestion - a bright scarf/bandana can really lift an outfit. I got a pink cashmere Kujten scarf for Xmas and its sooo cozy and (I think) cool!

LeftoversAgain · 23/01/2026 22:56

Hi, I went for a Didrikson parka, is that very uncool? I dont really want to wear my nice, wool coats. I also have some denim longer styles, think Baukjen but im heavier set. The only thing is my jacket seems to fly open as I walk so I have to button it up. Looking at uniqlo bags for a casual look
