Hair thinning in women

Catbrations · 01/01/2026 09:58

I have issues with my hair. I was trying to grow my hair long but i can't. My hair can get to approx bra strap but it is so thin at the ends. I look after my hair a lot and I am careful with my hair. I don't know if it's breakage. Maybe there could be some breakage more than likely not.

I have halo of short hairs. I thought it was new growth but I am coming to realise that it's likely hair that's not growing longer.

My hair is wispy and looks frizzy. This is despite hair care.

I was watching some videos online and I am coming to realise that this is likely something called hair miniaturization. It's where the follicle reduces the hair.

I became depressed about 2 years ago for different reasons. So this is likely depression, age and sickness and stress related.

Anyways rogaine or minidoxol was recommended.

But reading about this and it's for long term use. Once you stop it, the hair stops growing again. I really don't want this option.

Is there anything else that can help stop the thinning and reverse this?

My GP says I am too young for hrt. I am early 40s.

I still do have hair but I need to prevent any more of this continuing.

Any help or advice. I am just after starting on a peptide. I don't know if it will help.

While browsing online I found something called laser diodes and I am considering spending a small fortune on a hat device. It would be regular LEDs but medical grade. I am looking at something that is about 1300 which is a lot of money.

This was in response to trotula

I know! It’s impossible isn’t it but wanted to point out there may be a reason your levels are low even if you are taking supplements. I had no idea and used to take the supplement with a cuppa in the morning. Maybe take at night before you go to bed that might meet the 2 hours after eating bit??
just a thought!

I am going to search online for an easy or fast absorbable iron supplement and see if I can get away with an half an hour window before breakfast and take with vitamin c.

Do you have MYCARE in your area? It’s an NHS website where you can access all your hospital appointments, letters and test results, including those taken by the GP. It’s quite simple to register (if available) and you can look at all the blood test results. The format is easy to use and can be seen in graph or table format and also shows norms so easy to see where your results are relative to expectations.

I'm in Ireland unfortunately so I don't have that service or function unfortunately.

I have this issue. I have been taking iron supplements for a few weeks now and I think - think- the amount shedding is reducing . I have no idea if I am low on iron and I know that my nhs says that why are deemed acceptable levels are still too low swearing wise to maintain hair health . Plus I don’t think my go would authorise a test because of my hair. I might order a private test.

I feel the same way that a go likely won't authorise a test for hair. If you go to your GP with some other issue they may order blood tests.

I had a flare up of my condition before the Christmas and my GP asked me to go back bloods and 24 hour monitor. I never got a chance to do that but hopefully I will get that done in January at some stage. It will be later January for me because I am flat out busy. Most people even have today off. I am still in work.

I take Nutrition Geeks daily iron supplement, it’s more potent than the liquid irons but not as potent as prescription strength.

Regarding your hair length, my understanding is that is genetically determined and there’s nothing you can do there. Also Biotin only works for hair if you have an actual deficiency, Nutrition Geeks do a supplement so may be worth trying that.

There’s a really good dermatologist on Instagram who specialises in hair called something like dermatologist_adel so you might get some
good tips there.

Make sure there is at least two hours before your last tea/coffee and going to bed.

Then take your iron supplement just before you go to bed.

BigButtons · 01/01/2026 13:56

I take my iron at least 2 hours after my final caffeine/ tea if the day and day of with a pinch of sodium ascorbate.

Just ask the GP to do a full blood panel - they really shouldn't be guarding them especially if you are loosing hair. Most women need more iron because of periods but Dr's are weirdly averse to admitting this and happily put us on prozac etc instead. If they can see you do do that you might as well check nothing else is out of whack.

Nothing topical really gives lasting results but 5% minoxidil does work while you’re applying it nightly. The 2% version did little for me.

MissNixs · 02/01/2026 13:55

I have just ordered a 4 month supply of minoxidil foam 5%.

Have been faffing around for the last year with various so called miracle potions, nothing has helped meno hair shedding and thinning. Fingers crossed for the minoxidil.

Ferritin levels need to be above 70 before your hair starts to grow back

Catbrations · 02/01/2026 18:10

I'm following an account on tiktok that's says if your hair looks like this, this or this and gives examples it's androgenic alopecia. I meet two of them - thin wispy ends that look frizzy and a parting that's widening.

It doesn't look bad now and still have hair. The ends are bad though. I will be cutting my hair to shoulders in the hope of getting a blunt cut and some thickeness.

She said the only thing that will grow hair is minidoxol. I read up about that and I am apprehensive in that when you stop, the hair growth stops.

The person I am following explains it's hair miniaturization.

I am coming to terms with that.

Anyways, I was ill in December and my GP asked me to go book in for a blood pressure monitor and bloods but I never got a chance to do that. It looks like it might be the end of January by the time I will be able to organise that. The iron will likely be low.

I will seek anither iron supplement for now and I will talk with my GP about the low iron levels and ask for IV iron. I am tired a lot so that will help me. I will lie and say I find it constipating and I have a bowel condition where I can't get constipation. So I will boost up iron and ferritin through IV this spring I reckon.

Before you spend out on numerous gadgets go and see a tricologist - they are hair experts and when I went they were really helpful.
