Over Bleached Hair 2026 Rescue

I am sixty and my real hair colour is dark brown with loads of grey coming through.

I used to spend £££ getting it highlighted but stopped that as a cost of living economy drive, and have been using a blonde box dye on it for about two years now. It’s Nice n Easy Baby Blonde.

I feel like the colour is far too harsh now, and the condition of my hair isn’t great. I am lucky to have very thick wavy/curly hair which is shoulder length.

What do I do wise and stylish mumsnetters? Do I ask hairdresser to do something? What? I can’t afford anything that requires regular expensive upkeep. I would like to see if using a brown box dye improves things, but I don’t dare try to go from current “polar bear” look to “grizzly bear” without support.

Do I need a brown colour done at hairdressers? Any alternative ideas?

I am deathly pale with blue eyes.

I would get a dark brown box dye and do it myself. As it’s bleached you may have to do it 2/3 times for it to ‘take’ and for the bleach not to gradually lighten it over the weeks.

Thanks @Playingvideogames. I’m just terrified it will go green!!

No, there's nowt worse than box brown on a mature head of hair. It can look cheap and yes, often muddy green. You'll also be stuck dying it endlessly as the greys come through, which will also do your hair's condition no favours. When will it end then? 70, 80, 90 with muddy hair? Eventually you'll have to submit back to a fairer colour anyway as the greys start to win. Salon blonde or start to go natural I say.

catpigeon · 01/01/2026 07:50

Haven't read the thread, but why don't you go grey?

k1233 · 01/01/2026 08:10

I've got my grey transition planned. If you have a lot of greys then google grey hair styles, find some you like and see your hairdresser.

cuddlebear · 01/01/2026 08:26

Honestly I am not ready to be grey…

You could start by doing regular hair treatments? Most cost effective would be be to wash your hair and then leave a thick layer of conditioner all over and wrap cling film over your head and leave for an hour + Do it a few times a week.
Then find a nice sandy/beige colour toner and use that to tone the blonde and slowly let it grow out.
The brown hair dye is a bit risky. I’m pretty sure it’ll go green. You would need to add red pigment to avoid that and it’s not something you should attempt at home really.

Fedupwithneighbours · 01/01/2026 08:56

Yes brown over bleach blonde will go green! My hairdresser put the red back in, then brown on top when I wanted lowlights to break up the bleach to grow it out. Can you go and get a consultation to see what a hairdresser suggests?

gerispringer · 01/01/2026 08:59

Yes go to the professionals. Do grey blending which won’t show as it grows. Use a toner at home to reduce the yellow tones. Aim for a soft ash blonde .

Richandbeautiful · 01/01/2026 09:01

I would let the professionals sort out the colour, they can work something where you could stretch appointments between colouring longer. Your hair is too fragile now and too important for your overall appearance to risk a home job.
As for the condition of the hair, salon can also advise you. I ended up cutting my hair very short after a bad bleach as it left my hair tangly and damaged however I did see improvement with k18 product where I couldn't cut the hair shorter (the damage was close to my scalp and and I didn't eant to shave my head off) I found k18 better than keratin and olaplex and it's really easy to use. Maybe your hair needs toning and low lights, I'm not sure ..but the hairdresser can suggest at consultation and you can go away and make a decision to book if you feel happy about the plan and cost.

Go to a professional and tell them you want a low maintenance hair colour. They will do colour correction. Balayage would be good

catpigeon · 01/01/2026 10:35

I think you're old enough to pay someone to dye your hair

Newyearsameme26 · 01/01/2026 11:01

I don't think dark is an option for you.

catpigeon · 01/01/2026 11:05

I agree, I have dark brown hair and I've gone lighter and lighter as I get greyer to avoid a big badger stripe

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/01/2026 15:51

I've ordered some of the K18 mask ( mainly for DD ) I'll give it a try and see how it does .have natural mid/dark brown hair going grey . I use a semi-permanent dye but I mix two colours so it isn't too dark .
I did try going grey over Lockdown but went back to dyeing it .

CookingFatCat · 01/01/2026 16:33

Regular Intensive conditioning and a Demi permanent in medium blonde.
