Medik8 0.2% cream for £42 vs The Ordinary £7.40?!

Is there a reason the Medik8 retinal cream is £35 more than the Ordinary one? Surely the active ingredient is the same and will work the same?

Following as I'd love to know also!

Well the ordinary one has 8 ingredients and medik8 has about 30. But 30 isn’t necessarily better. I’d say give the ordinary one a go

GIow · 31/12/2025 09:40

The Medik8 one contains a moisturiser which appeals as it saves time. But not £35 of time?!

Watching with interest.
I would like to try one of the Medik8 retinol eye creams but it is eye wateringly expensive. It would need to work for that price. It’s the Crystal Retinal Ceramide one. Anyone used it ?

So retinAL is slightly more effective than retinOL, in that it takes one less conversion for your skin to utilise it. So technically they are not exactly the same thing.

However, you can find cheaper retinal products (geek and gorgeous for example), and actually tretinoin is much stronger than either retinol or retinal so you might want to try that - but it’s usually only available on prescription.

Like alot of beauty products, most of the price difference is paying for the brand name, fancy packaging etc.

Try to look for the active ingredient - and then find it in something cheaper.

There are loads of cheaper brands now doing great products - the ordinary, inkey list, geek and gorgeous to name a few.

One of the biggest cons in the beauty industry is ‘more expensive = better quality’, this is just not true.

I use The Ordinary one but it’s a serum so I use moisturiser & vitamin E serums/peptides etc alongside.

The Medik8 one is an all in one. It’s an excellent product & one I’m considering once I’ve built a tolerance as often I can’t be bothered with lots of different products. I think it’s fairly affordable especially when you compare it to products like Estée Lauder or Clarins which quite frankly don’t do much.

lindyloo57 · 31/12/2025 16:12

I started on the ordinary retinol, when the the ordinary hadn't been around for long, if you are new to it, be careful and only use 2 to3 times a week at first, I didn't , I put it on every night and ended up burning my chest, had to by some cream to repair my skin, so it definitely works, just go slowly.

blankcanvas3 · 31/12/2025 16:28

Medik8 is retinol vs renital. And also, I think Medik8 generally do the best skincare products on the market. Nothing makes as much difference to my face than Medik8 does, particularly the retinol products and the Vitamin C serum. The latter genuinely being life changing for me

Snowonground · 31/12/2025 19:00

Medik8 is great. But if you are going to spend £42 you may as well go for prescription tret which is the only thing that really works. I use Renew + Me (skin + me for peri menopause so has more moisturiser in) and I think that costs £28/month. So cheaper and can be better.

GIow · 31/12/2025 19:52

Thanks all. I was able to check them both out today in store. The Medik8 once certainly feels luxurious and the fact it’s simplifying the steps does appeal. I am tempted to treat myself after all!

I have the Medik8 Crystal Retinal and have used it for a couple of years. Got some more in the Black Friday sale. It makes my skin wonderfully soft and smooth and at 54 I have very few lines and no blemishes or rosacea etc at all. One tube lasts for ages used three or four times a week.
