OMG my hair is so wavy since perimenopause. Should I embrace it? How?

I have a short bob type cut. It tends to go a bit ratty beyond a certain length as I do colour it.

Over the past few years it has become really wavy. I can use a leave in conditioner and get quite a decent curl on it. Alternatively I dry it straight and it curls up at the ends.

Opinions please, should I let it grow and stop colouring the grey to blonde and go for the curly look? It tends to get messy through the day if the wind catches it if I run my fingers through it but I wonder if it might be ok if it was considerably longer. The last two photos are what it’s like by the end of the day. A mess.

What should I do? I’m mid 50’s and I don’t want to look like a scruffy old woman.

Mine has started to get dry and ratty past my shoulders - I am naturally wavy so I am going to embrace the perm and go all out with it. I colour mine too and I am not about to stop. My hair is fine so to be honest it's only something chemical that will give me proper structure - plus as those old adverts used to say: "I just want to wash... and go!" I don't want to be fiddling about with styling. I am currently thinking Virginia Madsen in Candyman but slightly longer...

My hair has gone the same and I’ve decided to embrace it. I’m 60 and been colouring, blow drying and straightening for decades so feel it’s time to let it just be. It’s been in much better condition since I stopped blow drying it.

When it goes a bit ratty at the ends I spray on some water, scrunch it and it curls again. (Hairdresser gave me that tip!)

IHeartKingThistle · 30/12/2025 22:24

Mine’s done the same this year. I’ve had it layered a bit and use a curl cream and gel to get a better wave but I’m still learning! I think yours looks lovely! I’m keeping mine about the same length as yours - I think if mine is long it will be too heavy for the waves to look nice. Good luck!

Perrylobster · 30/12/2025 22:32

The waves are good. If you can grow it a little longer, I would. I'd definitely keep the blonde as it suits your skin tone. I think tied back in a low pony would look nice too with the loose waves around the front of your face left out.

chunkyBoo · 30/12/2025 22:46

Mine went frizzy so I now get keratin treatment which has been fab - expensive but at least I feel ok about myself again!

That's a really good call. I might look into that for my birthday.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 30/12/2025 23:15

I’ve embraced the waves. I’ve gone vintage and when I wash it I towel dry then add texturising cream ( bed head) then pin it up with Bobby pins. I have a lengthy commute so it dries in the car, unpin and run fingers through.

missthearrival · 31/12/2025 07:58

Thanks for all your replies! Keratin treatment sounds interesting - does it straighten? Or just make the hair better condition?

I will hold on for a while then, I won’t cut it. I can dry it straight if I need to I guess. Just need to persevere with the growing out a bit longer.

chunkyBoo · 31/12/2025 08:45

Keratin makes my hair straight but just more manageable. You need to avoid SLS shampoo so you’ll need to buy special hair washing products, and if you treat it well it can last 3-4 months. I still straighten mine but it’s far easier to deal with

ChristmasHug · 31/12/2025 08:49

You may find if you grow it further your waves lessen with the additional weight. I'd do it and see if you like it.

It looks lovely now.

youarebeingsoextrarightnow · 31/12/2025 09:40

Hair down my back, waist length, have been dying it blonde from Auburn to colour the greys for about 10 years, but no more dying for me. I put curl serum on and it does go curly now but if I just leave it it goes wavy, can't be bothered to straighten it anymore. Contemplating getting it cut to collar bone length, it's normally tied up the day after I wash it or it goes 'big mess' hair

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 31/12/2025 09:43

I use Merwave products and have a curly bob! I use a diffuser to dry my hair. I love it.

Climbingrosexx · 01/01/2026 10:28

I can't advise on how to manage wavy hair but I am sure there are lots of products and advice from your hairdresser will have you feeling better about the changes to your hair. In answer to your question should you embrace it? Definitely! I would love wavy hair so would be making the most of it if it was me.

Janefx40 · 01/01/2026 10:33

Oh it’s gorgeous! I love it. But also I found getting a water filter on my shower restored my hair to normal - a combo of aging and hard water had really changed my hair…so depending where you live that could also be worth doing!

SaveloyDip · 01/01/2026 10:33

I found changing to the Wow series of curly products has really hydrated my menopausal, suddenly mega curly, hair. More expensive then anything I have previously used but very light weight and there is often a 30% offer on.

Embracing the curls while it lasts and will miss the curls if/when they decide to leave.

That's interesting - I live in London and I'm sure the hard water makes my frizzy dry hair worse (not to mention my skin) and I'd wondered if a filter might help. Did you just buy a shower head attachment and how often do you have to change the filter?

Tenofcups · 01/01/2026 10:57

I grew mine longer and it turned into ringlets! Starting to look a bit ratty now as lost a lot of hair this year. Embrace the waves!

missthearrival · 01/01/2026 17:48

Thank you, I’m interested in which WOW product you used? I have a supposed curly hair product in a silver spray bottle from them and it does nothing at all. Like spraying water in my hair.

OP posts:
SaveloyDip · 01/01/2026 18:55

I also use the silver bottle (dreamcoat) but my hair is so fine I find this set is much better.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 01/01/2026 19:40

Mine has gone curly the past few years. Used sls free shampoo anyway so just wash and condition as normal and then put in a leave in conditioner whilst it is soaking wet and scrunch with a microfibre towel. Scrunch in some light gel or jelly if I want it to hold a little longer and job done. Next day I dampen with a mist bottle and re scrunch. I don't ever brush my hair. That was the biggest thing, at first I was trying to use stuff for Chris bus was still brushing the next day because it would be a mess. Then I learned to dampen and comb through with fingers if I needed to and it works.

Janefx40 · 02/01/2026 08:03

@FrostyMorn so yes I just put it on the shower attachment. It looks like it might fall off but it doesn’t. So interestingly the first one I bought I couldn’t then find again online so I didn’t replace the filter - I was also using a hard water shampoo and that showed me the shampoo wasn’t working at all as when the filter stopped working (I removed it eventually), my hair went all frizzy again. So I have now bought another which is quite new and from a site that I can get filters from. Not yet had to replace but it says 3-4 months.

Mine is thick and wavy naturally. I don't straighten it as much anymore because I can't be bothered lol My hair is long too. I've tried it shorter but it doesn't sit right. I love just curling the ends when I wear it down 😊
