When did it become common to wear evening dress for weddings?

Looking at the pics of Gordon Ramsay’s daughter’s wedding and there seems to be much less traditional wedding wear and more evening dress/black tie. I didn’t think that was usually a thing for daytime weddings - is it common among real people or just celebs?

I’ve got 2 weddings next year and while I’m not a pastel coat dress/pashmina/fasinator type of person I wouldn’t pull off a slinky satin number either!

Do you mean common as in usual, or common as in trashy?

Adam’s mum is that you?

Absolutely loved the red bridesmaid dresses, just gorgeous. ❤️

I thought they were lovely.

A wedding I went to just before Christmas was black tie but it was actually the men who looked smarter than the women. I love evening dresses and think a wedding is the perfect reason to really dress up, especially this time of year. I think a spring/summer wedding, you can afford to go a little bit less glam.

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/12/2025 09:14

I hate black tie generally, not just when worn at the wrong time. It looks so tacky.

Personally I love to go as glam as I can for a wedding I don't look like I'm going into town on a night out but I am very much wearing glam dresses perhaps heels and glam hair as I don't get the opportunity very often.

I’m so intrigued by all the different weddings people have gone to! For example I have never been to a wedding where there is: a gap for people to get changed, black tie (or white tie!), a free bar. There are probably lots of other things as well!

WhitegreeNcandle · 30/12/2025 12:55

I was always brought up with not wearing bare shoulders in church so that would rule out a lot of evening wear for me.

Been to Greek, Jewish, Irish & Scottish weddings which are all pretty dressy. I think England is the outlier in that people go fairly casual.

I don't think black tie for weddings is a new thing in certain circles. Am Jewish and I recall my parents wearing black tie to weddings 30-40 years ago. (The weddings were usually on a Sunday, late afternoon/early evening).

A frightfully posh, very English ex of mine always wear morning suit. He was rather shocked to attend a wedding where few of the men were similarly attired. (It was not a black tie wedding). Indeed, he could not get his head around the fact many did not own a morning suit

@LeafyMcLeafFace have you never been to a non English wedding then?

Just Indian and Australian, obviously Indian wedding had its own dress code! Australian wedding was exactly like the English ones in terms of dress codes

Grapewrath · 30/12/2025 18:58

I loved the outfits! Traditions rightfully move on- I live next to a wedding venue and people are increasingly dressing up in formal or black tie. Pastels and fascinators look quite frumpy and old fashioned in comparison imo.

Grapewrath · 30/12/2025 19:03

Also I’m English and bridesmaids have gone first at the majority of wedddings I’ve attended- in all different venues

Yes, because the non-traditional way has taken over the traditional. Which I think is a shame personally.

You won't ever see a royal wedding where the bridesmaids precede the bride.

Looks absolutely fine when worn at the dinner table where its meant to be.

Or if you're a nightclub bouncer.

Hmm - I think they look better in tight black t shirts and jeans....
