Jacket for teenage girl

Dontgochasingrainbows · 24/12/2025 12:27

I was wondering if you can help.

DD is 14 and is small for her age ie Zara 11-12.

She understandably doesn’t want to wear Zara or Boden anymore. I can buy women’s size 6 or 8 but the sleeves are swimming on her.
Luckily she likes oversized but iI am really struggling to find a winter jacket. I can buy a cropped style jacket but the sleeves are way too long on everything.
I think she’d like Superdry/Abercrombie/Hollister style or if anyone has other more up to date suggestions.
I’m a loss after returning the latest one I bought from H&M.
Please help!

Look for any women's ranges labelled "petite" as they are shorter in the arm and leg. E.g. Next and H&M etc do a women's "petite" range, then get a size 6 or similar. Ordering online may help you find the right sizes.

Buy her something that is actually her size then, she's a child- buy her child sizes and then they will fit?

VanillaIceIceBaby · 24/12/2025 15:33

You will, have to get a child’s one if the adults ones are too big. Maybe try Pull and Bear.

The point is she’s 14. 14 years olds are style concious and growing up. Age 11 clothes often won’t be the same as the older ages as it’s more of a kid age range. Often kids clothes stop at 12 I think?

I don’t think it’s as simple as buying age 11 in the clothes her mates are wearing as they’ll often be in different sections - is my guess.

I remember having this issue about the same age with trousers/jeans as I was so dinky in the waist and not even 5 foot.

I now wish my waist was dinky and argue I’m 5 foot 1!

OP - try a petite range. You will get most places in petite online rather than the shops.

DD is this size. She’s 13 but fits 11-12 generally.

She’s got a iets frans (from Urban Outfitters) black puffer jacket which she loves. The smallest size (XXS I think) is generous but not ridiculous on her. She also has some iets frans Harri joggers, smallest size.

New Look, H&M and Zara are our other go tos. Generally she fits one age below her actual age in Zara/H&M and New Look could be either one below or her actual age. Abercrombie Kids works but comes up large, she needs to go down at least one age if not two.

She fits the smaller styles in Brandy Melville and the smallest size in Subdued - both very in with her crowd.

Hollister doesn’t go small enough

That’s exactly it Thank you.

I panic bought an Adidas puffer jacket which she’d have loved a couple of years ago. I showed it to her and she said it’s only worn by kids who ride around on electric scooters causing trouble. Is this true? I can’t keep up.

Brandy Melville is her style but does it run large and are the trousers very long? She’s short. The sizes are XS/S?

The Brandy Melville trousers aren’t ridiculously long. I’m 5’3 and their joggers and maxi skirts were an ok length on me - near floor length but not trailing. But I have hips and bum so would be longer on someone very slim. Mind you I reckon they would shrink a little after washing.

Size wise I am a 6/8 on top (I’m petite but I’m 45 so have some heft!) and their tops fit me but are a bit tighter than I’d like, they are a little loose on DD, but she can wear some styles fine.

Do have a look at New Look teen range - it does a good line in small fitting T shirts and is generally pretty good I think. DD has a maxi skirt she loves and some trousers from there and she likes the T shirts even if it’s not the most fashionable brand 🙄. She didn’t have to size down much so I would say it runs small.

The brands… honestly it seems to vary from school to school / group to group… you’ll have to ask your DD!

True about Adidas? Absolutely. You only have to look at the models on the Adidas website to know who its core audience is.

Brandy Melville doesn’t run large.

MojoMoon · 24/12/2025 23:42

You can get sleeves shortened easily on many jackets. Ask at your local tailor/dry cleaners

If you find a jacket she like and it works apart from the sleeves then it's not too expensive to get it shortened

(I guess I have short arms as I've had a few sleeves shortened or perhaps just unwilling to have really grubby cuffs)

Another return then I suppose.
I thought it looked ok, it had the usual three stripes on the arms. She wore sports brands up until last year and did a wardrobe clear out and put them all in the charity shop bag saying they were too small for her. I’m now thinking they were not too small. I can’t keep up and don’t have the budget for fast changing trends!

She needs to be more involved in choosing her own clothes then.

It is true about adidas. My dd is an athlete and wears adidas for that but she wouldn’t wear it out of sport because it’s what ‘road men’ wear.

awrbc81 · 25/12/2025 11:08

Any ladies petite range in a size 6/8
have a look on asos/pretty little thing.
Next are also good for a selection of brands to order online (my teen wouldn’t be seen dead in Next petite though)

Otherwise maybe super dry or similar older kids range? As long as it’s not not bright pink etc should be acceptable?

My DD has an adults super dry size 8, she is petite (about 5’2”) but would be bigger than a kids 11-12, so I would think it would be big on your DD.
