Please help me do my DD’s hair!

My DD is 20 months and she’s already had her hair trimmed 4 times. It’s past her shoulders and she’s got a little fringe. The texture is very straight and fine and silky but she has a lot of it.

Unfortunately I’ve got all the dexterity of a T rex when it comes to doing her hair and so have always shoved my hair up in a bun. I can do a ponytail or sometimes pigtails for her but it always looks bumpy and uneven. Her childminder redoes it when I drop her off and it always looks beautiful. Sometimes she does a plait or even a French plait.

Does anybody have any tips on how I can get to grips with her hair? I’d love to make it pretty for her at Christmas.

Thanks and Merry Christmas.

I got one of my DD’s dolls and sat with YouTube tutorials until I got better at it - it’s just practice.

DD’s hair is like this although she would pull out all hair accessories so I cut it in a bob until she was 4! I’ve now had to learn proper styles. Some thoughts:

Are you brushing the whole head back from the hair line, over and over again? And gathering it into your hand as you brush round her head. This is the only way to get it smooth. When DH started doing DD’s hair he would just sort of pull it back from the temples and put the hair tie in and it wouldn’t stay.

The game-changer for us has been a tiny bit of product - Wella Deluxe Supreme Definition oil infused creme gel. Tiny amount on fingers smooth through hair. Gives it a bit of grip. Makes me feel a bit daft using something so fancy looking on a little child but really helps.

A “Wet Brush” has been the best tool - brushes out knots without pulling and can be used on dry or wet hair. Also very handy as a first step in the bath when you need to nit-comb. (Shudder)

Youtube is your friend, and practice. Pop her in front of the tv while you do it. A lot of it is muscle memory.

YouTube is your friend here. It taught me how to do all kinds of styles on both my daughter’s hair when they were small. I wasn’t very good at doing hairstyles before either, very basic ponytails and pigtails.

Just wanted to say thanks for all these suggestions. I’m trawling YouTube as we speak and I might try a smidge of product for special occasions.
