I was brought up to think that caring about your appearance was nothing more than vanity. So I never really paid attention, and have always struggled to just 'get' what other people seem to get about how to dress, present yourself etc. I'm 52 now and just want to go from scruffy dumpy to chic elegant older woman. I am successfully overhauling my diet so that's a start, and I religiously have ironed matching clothes (A little boring to be fair as I stick to neutral colours to be on the safe side).

So- what is your single top tip? My resolution for 2026 is to regularly get my eyebrows attended to and professionally shaped (they are big and bushY). What other things can I add? I love a list!!

Thank you in advance!

Wear a slip under skirts/dresses.

Guavafish1 · 20/12/2025 08:08

There lots of instagram video… I like to watch them as it’s almost try before you buy

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 20/12/2025 08:11

I always wear at least a tinted moisturiser. Days i go to the office i wear foundation, but all other days tinted moisturiser.

soccermum10 · 20/12/2025 08:18

I wear suncream everyday under moisturiser and make up. I don't like foundation as they're too heavy, so stick with a bit of BB cream. As for clothes I like to try new things to express myself. But like to feel comfortable as well. Being comfortable in your clothes is a must.

OvernightBloats · 20/12/2025 08:25

Don't put pressure on yourself to be someone you aren't. Don't try to copy. Be true to yourself. Do what you are comfortable with.

Personally, I always feel ready to face the world when I have makeup on. Love how makeup transforms how I look, love buying makeup and applying it. You may be different. Go with your own style. 🙂

staringatthesun · 20/12/2025 08:26

Find your style! Try looking on Pinterest and build a board of looos you like. You can always then look on Vinted for similar items. Think about accessories such as bags, earrings, necklaces etc - they are all part of your outfit! Have your hair trimmed regularly. Use SPF every day. Finally, have fun with your style and enjoy the process!

ChristmasHug · 20/12/2025 08:32

I think you are right on the eyebrows, mine are unfortunately barely there so I have to draw them on every day.

For daily life I need some make up, I'm very pale and look ill without and notice a huge difference in the way people speak to me if I'm not wearing it, I get asked if I'm OK a lot too.

For my personal style it's hair. Mine is curly and looks lovely when it's done. It really only takes an additional 15 minutes but I find it hard to motivate myself sometimes.

Namechangesecretsignature · 20/12/2025 08:38

Hair is very important. Keep it healthy and styled. Rollers or heattless curlers of a night. if your hair is done you look put together no matter what. Same with nails.

Highlighta · 20/12/2025 08:42

For me it's feeling comfortable and confident. And by doing that I dress in a style that suits me, and not necessarily fashionably. Things are are 'must haves' according to some, are definitely not for all.

Have a look at your posture. Do you walk tall? Or do you slump about a bit. A simple top is going to look so much nicer on someone who stands up straight that someone who slouches.

I like neutral colours too, but not every neutral looks good with my skin tone. So that is also something I pay attention to.

I gave away everything that is black on my top half as it just sucks the life out of me.

And ironing. Yes this is a huge one. I know people say they don't iron and no one can notice as they give things a good shake, but really I can tell.

This is a brilliant tip and one I have forgotten.

I'm Australian and of course had it drummed into me to wear sunscreen, But TBH i did not take the European sun very seriously when I came here and was lazy with it.

Spending a few weeks with my family in Oz this year- you can most certainly tell the difference in skin between people who wear it and those who don't.

I like this. I don't really know what 'my style' is. I follow a youtuber who I love (The Daily Connosseur) and her mantra is 'look presentable always' so I tend to go with that. Matching tops and bottoms (most usually in a navy blue) and ironed. I never go out without makeup because I have roseacea. But my own actual style? Not sure. I had a brief flirtation with Dark Academia and that was terrific fun, but I am too short and round to pull it off well at the moment.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I do appreciate it. Thanks

Always buy the best quality bras, boots and bags you can afford.

Jugendstiel · 20/12/2025 09:03

Brows are a really good start. A good haircut that suits how you live. No point in getting a cut that needs to be carefully blow-dried and styled, if you are likely to towel dry it after a shower, so find a hair dresser who can cut it well for the way you will actually care for it.

My top tip is this: think about your personality and interests and then in each outfit wear something a tiny bit more edgy than you normally would, which reflects your personality. So if you are very sporty, buy really stylish trainers and joggers. If you are artier, maybe a velvet jacket or long, soft cashmere sweater. If you love history, maybe some lace-up Victorian boots or a beautiful tweed vintage coat. It sounds a bit ridiculous, but a single piece that reflects your personality with a bit of verve but isn't too out there can really lift a wardrobe out of invisible safety mode.

Nice. Love the slightly more edgy tip.

Gamechanger I think. Especially as I start to build confidence.

Thank you. Smile

get your colours done. Finding the colours that suit you is an investment you can buy clothes with confidence / it’s easier to put outfits together as the colours that suit you will all suit each other. Saves money and time as you don’t consider clothes in colours you have learnt don’t suit you

HansHolbein · 20/12/2025 09:14

Everything needs to be ironed.

Dark academia is great! If you feel it doesn't entirely suit your current shape, just add accents rather than going the whole hog. I think you probably do have a good idea of what suits you but like many of us have just got a bit lost in the trenches of family life!

momager22 · 20/12/2025 11:11

I have a few so will list them:
Clothes - but fewer good quality, natural fabric items and look after them well. No polyester or acrylic, but look after your wool - cool wash, buy a de bobbler. A good pair of comfy leather boots, keep them clean and polished.

Grooming - think minimalist and tidy, ideally you want to be able to feel confident with no make up. Brows shaped and tinted - just for men beard dye is great for this !. Lashes lifted and tinted if you can afford it.
Nails - trim cuticles, use cuticle oil daily, neutral polish.
good simple skincare routine.

I had a 'big' birthday last year and decided it was time to smarten myself up a bit and get out of my rut. So I've been trying on things I'd never consider before and realised that the fussy patterns I've been wearing for years do nothing for me. My next task is to get rid of all the unflattering stuff in my wardrobe - easier said than done. It's easier if you have a stylish and honest friend who can help you.

Britpopbaby · 20/12/2025 14:19

SPF 50 + is a must for me and like the Ultra Violette tinted one. Saves time waiting for a SPF to settle and then apply foundation.

Shavasana · 20/12/2025 14:21

Yoga every day and lots of water.

Gettingbysomehow · 20/12/2025 14:23

I have 2.

  1. Being the right weight for your weight. I hadn't realised how being fat aged me. I recently lost 5 stone over a year and I look 1000 times better.
  2. A really good night's sleep with the heating off. Heating during the night makes my face all puffed.
B0D · 20/12/2025 14:34

Not my top tip but I have found myself in wearing perfume more as I get older. I’ve always had a casual, eclectic tomboy style and in my youth I associated perfume with girly girls and wouldn’t go near it. Now it makes me feel more put together and that I chose my outfit, it wasn’t an accident!

Nifty50something · 20/12/2025 14:38

Tight line your eyes. It looks way better than the way I used to apply eyeliner and really draws attention to the eyes yet looks subtle.

fishfingerbutty · 20/12/2025 14:46

Stick to a good skincare routine, for face and body. Cerave cleansers and moisturisers are good for both if you want something simple.
