Hair colouring - going lighter

I have very dark hair naturally. Every time I've tried some version of highlights/lighter foils, it goes too warm for my skin tone. I'm unfortunately of an age where greys are popping through with alarming regularity.

I've been getting foils in a dark ashy brown to match my natural tone to hide the greys. Last time I talked to a hairdresser about getting some lighter colour put through, they said that to maintain the ashy colour I need, I'd have to have regular toners done or it will always go too warm for me.

Is this the case? How often would I need to get a toner done to keep a lighter colour ashy? Are there any other solutions to my problem?

I’ve done this . It does go warm to be honest and I use blue shampoo to try and counteract it but I find after about 4-6 weeks I’m not happy and roots are looking dark too by then. I can probably get away with just toner once a month and parting done every 8 weeks just about but need to get more organised about booking .

I’m admittedly not dark but my hair does go extremely warm when bleached and I use ’John frieda salon blonde colour corrector’ in champagne blonde instead of my usual conditioner every 3 or so washes. Works really well, no need for any salon toners.

Purple conditioner or a pale semi perminant at home purple dye are your friends. Something like directions wisteria. Or the John fried a intense purple conditioner

Provoke do a “go ashy” shampoo which works well for me. It’s pretty cheap as well but I’m not fussed on the smell of it, I put up with it for the price though.

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't realise there were shampoos that might help too.

I've made an appointment for after Christmas so will have a chat to the hairdresser then.
