Strange itchy/puffy under-eye skin condition

Something weird is going on and I don't know if anyone on here has experienced similar?

Three weeks ago, out of the blue, overnight the skin under my eyes became terribly itchy. In the morning, the skin was puffy and swollen under both eyes, slightly extending down to the top of my cheek and ever so slightly on the eyelids. It was also red. The itchiness subsided but the puffiness took about 3-4 days to go away. I just assumed it was a strange allergic reaction to something although that's completely unheard of for me - never reacted to anything before. No changes to skincare or laundry products.

About a week later, the same thing happened. Same pattern. And then a few days after that (earlier this week), it happened again. Each time, it starts with itching and then the skin is swollen. I don't feel ill, my eyes are absolutely fine, it's only the skin that's affected.

I haven't been to the GP yet. I have taken antihistamines which don't seem to have had any effect. I'm at a loss. I know people will say to go to the GP which I will as soon as I can get an appointment and time off work for something which isn't urgent.

For full disclosure, I'm on HRT (have been without any side effects for two years) and I also had tear trough fillers one year ago.

Would appreciate any thoughts as I'm starting to get concerned - and the fragile skin under my eyes is showing some damage from the swelling.

My friend had something that sounds similar but ended up with patches all over her neck to, all like round circles, so itchy and uncomfortable but they ended up doing bloods which showed a vitamin d deficiency. Shes taken fexofenadine and vit D which has helped but the bad weather did make it worse.

I had this and it turned out I’m allergic to nail varnish but just the sensitive skin around my eyes

Are you using any older makeup near your eyes? I had something like this with a Touche Eclat that I was using for 6 months.

TeenagersAngst · 18/12/2025 13:24

No, not using old makeup, I’ve hardly worn makeup in the last few weeks since the first flare up. Don’t wear nail varnish either.

I had this and it turned out to be my Kiehl’s eye cream. It turned out that it didn’t age well and so after months of using it without any issues it suddenly started burning the skin around my eyes. It took me ages to work out what it was as it seemed to happen out of the blue. I only happened to see reviews for the product that all complained about the same thing.

Hi all, just to come back with an update. At the moment, it’s looking like it was a delayed onset reaction to the fillers I’d had over a year ago!

This happened to me and has completely stopped now I'm on HRT - completely gamechanger! It was particularly triggered by drinking alcohol, especially champagne as I think I became really sensitive to histamines.

Be very careful if you’re considering having it dissolved - get ultrasound guided and micro doses.

I had it dissolved a week ago at a different clinic by a nurse. She was critical of the type of product used and the placement but I don’t know if either of those things led to the reaction I had.

Her care was excellent and I have had no side effects other than the initial redness and puffiness from the hyaluronidase which calmed down after a few hours.
