Does anyone else love Poetry’s style of clothing?

And if so, where else do you shop?
Please tell me your favourite outfits, fabrics and colours, Poetry, mix and match, or otherwise.

I’m after inspiration as my peri body seems to very much prefer their lovely natural fabrics, subtle colours and muted styles.

I do love the look of Poetry's clothes, but anything I order never looks right on me, it must be my body shape. I do wear a lot of Toast clothing and marks and Spencer and the odd piece from Max Mara. Toast I mostly buy dresses and tops/jumpers, Marks and Spencer nighties, underwear, jeans and jumpers. Max Mara coats, bags.

Leftsidefacing · 16/12/2025 18:11

I get the Poetry catalogue but find it a bit bland and have never ordered anything.

Having said that I suppose I do dress in that style as its easy on all levels.

There’s very little in my wardrobe that’s not Toast, Marks and Spencer or House of Bruar (I’ll qualify that by saying I live in Scotland and can go to the physical store).

GrannyTeapot · 16/12/2025 18:23

Love House of Bruar.

DelinquentSnails · 16/12/2025 18:29

Interesting. I struggle with Toast. I love their cropped side button jeans but nothing else fits me. Poetry clothes fit well. Their tops aren’t too long on me which is rare.

I wonder if you guys are tall and elegant? I’m built like a Hobbit. Maybe Poetry has cornered the perimenopausal, affluent lady Hobbit market?

Love House of Bruar.

Me too. I dismissed it at first as perhaps being a little too ‘Sunday Supplement’ but its all lovely, really. And the prices are good compared with a lot of similar stuff from more ‘fashionable’ places that I used to wear.

Ha! No!

I’m 54, a size 14 and 5’ tall on a good day.

I wear the Annie side button jeans more than anything else but strangely don’t find the tops or dresses too long, but then I really love a long dress.

Day to day I usually wear wide leg trousers and a toast plain long sleeve top or linen shirt layered with a wide cropped jumper over the top.

glendabrownlow · 17/12/2025 09:26

I am also neither tall nor elegant. I find Toast dresses extremely 'forgiving' for my size 14/16 flat-chested pot bellied frame. I'm also 5'4 but I like long dresses. Strangely enough I don't get on at all with their trousers: I find the waists often too tight but the backside absolutely massive to the point where the material is ballooning out.

Another brand I like but can't get on with is LK Bennet - I really think you have to be tall with an hourglass figure to suit their clothing and, as above, I am neither.

DelinquentSnails · 17/12/2025 15:37

Thanks all. I’ll definitely look at Toast dresses again. They look really comfortable but with some figure definition and I know the fabrics are lovely. At the moment, it’s just the Annie jeans I wear. Any other Toast items might fit my Hobbity physique?

I’ll also look at House of Bruar. That one is completely new for me.

Has anyone had any luck with Me and Em? I have a couple of their blouses which are absolutely gorgeous, but I fear their skirts would trail three feet behind me.

I bought a lovely dress from Me and Em, beautiful quality fabric but really really long - too long to be successfully taken up. So it got sent back. And that was the end of my sojourn to Me and Em.

If you want to look at House of Bruar I recommend signing up for the print catalogue, Its lovely and has exclusive items and usually a 10% discount code.

They have nice shirts, trousers and dresses that won’t scare the horses and their footwear very high quality, practical and well priced. I might be showing my age there!

I think Poetry clothing looks more ‘flattering’ than toast. I’ve never ordered poetry as although the colours and fabrics are similar I think I’d find them a bit ‘mean’ fabric wise - I’m someone who is very happy in a massive smock dress even though it makes me look like a Weeble, because I love it, and I’m not really interested in flattering my figure.

Sorry OP! Not much help. What pieces have you got your eye on at Poetry? Toast is full of Christmas stuff at the moment so its a bit difficult to compare their offerings.

This post really tickled me op! I'm quite tall, but if I'm elegant, I fear it's more in my hopeful mind's eye, than in reality!

I love Poetry. Like you, I love their muted colours and beautiful natural fabrics. I tend to lean towards quite a Boho look. My favourite is maxi/midi skirts or wide legged trousers with a fitted t-shirt or jumper, or with a more relaxed, drapey top tucked in. I love autumnal colours, but also black and purple and dusky colours. I also love cord dresses, trousers, miniskirts.

Have you tried Wrap? I think they are a sister company to Poetry. I buy most of my clothes in charity shops, or on ebay, but I always buy natural fabrics and the brands I know I love. I adore Free People, but I'm not sure how this brand would work on someone small, as their dresses and trousers are very long. I'm 5'8", and some are almost too long for me.

Just2again · 17/12/2025 17:23

I’m another 5’4 size 16 Toast lover, I get on quite well with their clothes and treat myself to a dress most years, as well as other items. I’m lucky enough to live about 5 minutes from a store.

A new Me+Em store opened in my town last week so I went for a look. It was a beautiful shop with just one of every item on the racks. Unfortunately I didn’t see anything above a size 10 on display although I see online they do go up to a size 16/18. It really put me off, who wants to take a size 6 item to the assistant ask for it in a size 16, or even a size 10? It just put me off. Maybe that’s just me, I had a similar issue in Jigsaw a couple of years ago and actually asked why they only display the smallest sizes. They were quite defensive, excuses about capacity. However the next time I went in there was a greater range of sizes out.

Leftsidefacing · 17/12/2025 17:38

Well done, as someone who’s a solid 14 and will choose a 16 or 18 if I like the fit I would have done the same. I saw this happening in Mango a long time ago and have never been in there since.

Why are high street brands taking the stance of some couture level designers and making it clear that they don’t want ‘larger’ women wearing their clothes?

WideOpenBeaches · 17/12/2025 17:46

I’ve had a couple of nice things from Wrap. Having had my colours done and wearing a lot of blue as a result, I like their colour palettes.

Toast has always been a tad voluminous for me but maybe I’ve not tried on the right things?

I often look at Plumo but again, a bit voluminous and on the pricey side. Their stuff is beautiful though.

DelinquentSnails · 17/12/2025 21:58

It’s so depressing that some brands stock such limited range of sizes. Not least because the average Me and Em shopper is as likely to be a 14 as a 10. Surely it can’t be good for business.

Someone mentioned Wrap earlier. I bought a lovely green cord shirt dress from
there last month and have had several compliments (even when work with a Santa hat and festive flamingo earrings.) It is definitely a brand I’ll go back to.

This was my Poetry but of the season. I wear it with their denim culottes, which are very soft and feel elegant to wear. www.poetryfashion.co.uk/product-RH25/colour-g-soft-berry/cashmere-crewneck-sweater.htm?_gl=1yv1em9_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=Cj0KCQiAxonKBhC1ARIsAIHq_ltkA61YVTewuLrLC8WlXo8ZKThnPmMETZDMZCtiCvA8plUSgCruucMaAkbrEALw_wcB&gbraid=0AAAAAD_X_JzpnzMUqopnOltc7wKtOJ3s4

And I’ve been yearning for this for months. I have nowhere to go in it, we are in a very hot place all Christmas. Surely it’s not excessive for Sainsbury’s in January?

I buy from both Wrap and Poetry

UxmalFan · 17/12/2025 22:13

I love the look but nothing suits me. Sahara and Oska are my favourites.

UpMyself · 17/12/2025 22:48

I like it too. The styling does look 'Sunday Supplement' but I love woollens and tartan.

Have you looked at Sahara, @DelinquentSnails .
You might like Plumo and Rundholtz.

UpMyself · 17/12/2025 22:51

You have the budget, but for those who don't, Seasalt and Tu at Sainsbury's have some decent stuff.

UpMyself · 17/12/2025 22:53

OP, have you tried Margaret Howell? There's another company I've seen on here but I can't remember the name. Floisme would know.
