What to wear for lunch at Michelin starred restaurant?

CariahMary · 16/12/2025 09:36

I'm out for a taster menu lunch next week at a Michelin starred restaurant. It doesn't look too stuffy or formal. But it's clearly not MaccyDs 🤣

What does a person wear to this kind of place? I've paid a deposit so hope they won't turn me away for looking a scruff.

My wardrobe is very very casual 🫠

I have also been to Roots and concur that it is lovely. Beautiful location and warm, welcoming atmosphere. It was years ago so I don't remember what I wore but it was almost certainly trousers and a smart top as that is my go to for all evenings out. But I honestly don't think it mattered as it wasn't stuffy or formal at all.

Newgirls · 16/12/2025 16:21

You can get some bargain ankle boots at the moment - under £30. That might elevate a dress or jeans (as you did ask).

Lathemistress · 16/12/2025 16:22

I have eaten at quite a few Michelin starred restaurants, Roots being one of the and it is up there as one of my favourites. It has a very relaxed vibe and is definitely all about the food. We were there for the evening tasting menu at Easter weekend and there were people in both shorts and trainers. I wore trousers and a nice top and my partner wore decent jeans and a casual shirt.
You will love it, the staff are amazing and will treat you like royalty, the go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy the experience and the food is heavenly and definitely worth it's star. Enjoy!

BellaVita · 16/12/2025 16:22

Those trainers will be fine.

I have been to Roots albeit when it first opened. Have been to the other restaurants under this umbrella and honestly you get a mix of different clothes.

Enjoy your lunch.

Another2356 · 16/12/2025 16:27

I’m a jeans and sweatshirt gal. I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks, I dress how I want and still go to the fine dining restaurants, no one has turned me away, they all accept my money and are grateful for the tip. 😀. Ps I dress like this for every occasion (with the exception of weddings and large ‘special occasion’ parties), but funerals birthdays, etc jeans/teeshirt/sweatshirt weather depending. I dress to please me.

BarnacleBeasley · 16/12/2025 16:34

I'm quite jealous - this review makes it sound amazing, and the accompanying photograph looks like people are wearing pretty normal clothes, including trainers.

It doesn't matter. Too dressy and you may look out of place. I would go smart casual.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 16/12/2025 16:41

We go to Michelin star restaurants semi regularly and have been to roots, although it’s not one of my personal favourites I’m sure you’ll have a lovely time.

I wouldn’t wear trainers no, jeans, a nice top and boots are fine. I seriously doubt you’ll be turned away but it’s a bit naff to wear trainers in a posh restaurant, even if roots is one of the more casual Michelin star places.

ETA it’s TASTING menu not taster menu.

potatocarbcoma · 16/12/2025 16:44

I’m lucky enough to have eaten in a few Michelin places, it’s all about the experience and as a pp has said, they will treat you like a rockstar whatever you wear.
My first experience I really dressed up as it was for me a special occasion to be going to such a place, I felt overdressed when I arrived, it’s very obvious that those who don’t eat in these places often get very dressed up, those that do eat regularly (foodies and rich people) dress pretty casually. There is nothing wrong in getting dressed up either, why not if it’s a special occasion?!
I now go for a smart casual vibe. Trainers are very casual, but no one will bat an eye lid. Especially at lunch time. If possible just balance it with a smarter top. Do you have a suit jacket you could wear over a plain t-shirt? That type of thing.
Don’t Overthink it, you’re going to have a wonderful time! Enjoy!

Fauchon · 16/12/2025 16:48

Don't worry at all about what you wear OP. We have been to Roots (lovely) and many other Michelin starred restaurants and have never had a stuffy experience. It's all about the food. Hope you enjoy.

I would dress up a bit - it's not every day you go out for tasting menu - maybe it's me but don't go out often so when I do I like to dress up a bit. I would wear a nice wool skirt knee high boots and a nice wool jumper with nice jewellery hair done and make up. all in my wardrobe buts that's me. I like to dress up a bit when go out it makes me feel good. but what I wear is comfortable and warm for me too

This gives me Princess Anne vibes 😅

That isn't what PP said though. Her comment suggests that people from Yorkshire don't get out much so would 'dress up'. Quite patronising really. And also that people down south consider a dress from FatFace very smart which is, ahem, not the case.

That's how you took it but it's not what I wrote.

Other posters were clearly able to see what was meant so I don't think the issue was with my post.

Janejanejaneagain · 16/12/2025 17:00

I think it would actually be more uncomfortable to look like you’ve “made an effort” for lunch.

These threads ALWAYS go the same way with people saying they go out for a special dinner wearing ancient jeans and a T-shirt with holes in… and anyone who makes an effort is too sad .

My advice is a nice top - the others at the table are only seeing your top half! and a roomy pair of trousers. Tasting menus can be very filling - not all are tiny portions. I just went to a dead posh restaurant in London and contrary to MNetters insisting that no one makes any effort - people were dressed very festively. I wore black (semi-elasticated!) trousers and a satin blouse.

Went over the weekend, absolutely not.my.cup of tea but was gifted it by someone who clearly doesn't know us as well as they think.
Its mostly jeans and a nice top / blouse for women with heeled shoes or heeled boots.
Men smart but not suit trousers, a shirt bit no tie or long sleeve black polo buttoned up and smart shoes.

I wore baggy jeans but a mesh top and heels
Husband wore trousers that are kind of.jeans but soft, smart boots but like rubber sole ones, white shirt took a jacket as did I. Friends turned up and dh pretty similar the wife had baggy jeans, flat boots, cashmere jumper and sat through it with her leather jacket and scarf on. Nobody was overly dressed

Terrytheweasel · 16/12/2025 17:24

I go to lots of Michelin restaurants and jeans and trainers etc is absolutely fine. I see people wearing everything from mega glitzy to looking like they’ve just been for a hike. I normally wear something nice but I don’t go overboard.

CariahMary · 16/12/2025 18:21

I don't own anything very smart, I've not been to that restaurant but we live near a different michelin star restaurant also in North Yorkshire, that I like to visit on special occasions. I tend to wear a white stuff/fat face stretchy dress over leggings, with a pair of ballet flats.

"Her comment suggests that people from Yorkshire don't get out much" - what??!

Her comment doesn't suggest anything like that. What a weird thing to read into it.

Minnowsmouse · 16/12/2025 19:11

When we went to Le Gavroche a two starred Michelin restaurant, we were staying just out of London in a campervan. I’d done some Christmas shopping, so as well as a bit scruffy, I was slightly dishevelled and looked like the bag lady.

We were treated like royalty. Don’t worry.

sashh · 17/12/2025 08:04

So jealous of the people for whom this is a regular event not a once in 10 years event.

ethelredonagoodday · 17/12/2025 21:07

Another person who’s been to roots a couple of times (we live nearby), and various other similar places. Like to go reasonably smart, but as many others have said, trainers and jeans absolutely are ok, Roots is very relaxed and has a lovely informal atmosphere, despite the high end food! Enjoy OP!

gogomomo2 · 17/12/2025 21:11

smart casual is fine, by that I mean decent jeans (dark, no holes) with a blouse perhaps, knitted jersey dress and tights or wool skirt with fitted jumper would be my thoughts.
