Is Orla Kiely 'done'?

Looking at bags for DW's birthday, but they're wincingly expensive for an old tightwad like me, particularly if they're now too commonplace/boring.

Any opinions, oh style gurus?

was only teasing re Test

has she specified orla keily - in any kind of oblique way? or is the hint "bag"?

what's the rest of her personal style like?

oh, heavens jsut buy it already but keep the receipt and if she comes on here saying its not quite what she had in mind, we'll tell her its ok to change it

DaDaDa · 10/06/2008 18:09

That's too beige Betty (and over £100 more, natch!)

The hint was "I like bags". She likes Marc Jacobs, Orla Kiely, Cath K, Ethel Austin....

Is there anything in thelast season pile she likes

bettybeetroot · 10/06/2008 18:23

if you go with the one you linked it is slightly cheaper (£230) at felixandoscar.co.uk

On Sunday, the Sunday Times Style section had a feature on a range of bags from Chloe, called See by Chloe (like a diffusion line). I am in love with all of them! The ones they featured ranged in price but there were several under £100. They are apparently stocked in HoF (but not the one near me!) and I can't remember which other department store. According to me, that is v-trendy and also affordable - not something you can usually say about Chloe!

PatsyCline · 10/06/2008 20:36

Buy reasonably priced but still lovely bag (eg: www.boden.co.uk/col.asp?segname=Women&styid=AM057&segid=6&gpname=Bags&desname=Leather+Tote&gpid=2&ge n=1#img0 and then ring all of her friends/colleagues/family and demand any info they can give you about her heart's desire. She will recently have commented on some wonderful item they wear or place they are going. Act upon their advice and hide within bag a fabulous prize item such as an eternity ring/trip to Venice.

Next year, record every conversation you have and spend your lunch hours listening back to them! Simple but effective.

agree re: paperchase/ kiely comparison
If you are going to buy a bag, make it mulberry or chloe. I would say a Hermes Birkin, but let's not be silly. But I reckon that if you are going to spend more than £100 on a bag, it may as well be an investment buy. Orla Kiely is not. Chloe & Mulberry are

how about this

Stargazing · 10/06/2008 21:12

ooh, just noticed that you said she likes Marc Jacobs

this is hot

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 21:19

If she likes Orla Keily, though, then who is to say that she's 'done'?

mazzystar · 10/06/2008 21:25

please don't buy her a boden bag
even with something else inside it

PrincessPeaHead · 10/06/2008 21:27

that is a NYLON bag for £415 Stargazing. Are you nuts? Do you like being taken for a complete idiot by bag manufacturers? Mumsnetters will know that I don't baulk at spending cash on a nice bit of leather from Fendi, but anyone who spends 400 sheets on a bit of badly designed nylon and leather from Marc Jacobs FGS needs their head examining.

If she likes Orla Kiely, buy the bag. She will love that you went out and made the choice, and that you bought her something quirky and interesting and not something dull and sensible (or a purple nylon shopper)

Stargazing · 10/06/2008 21:34

good lord peahead - no need to get personal. Just giving the man some suggestions!

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 21:36

Star, hun, I feel you need your eyes examined not because of the price of the bag or its materials, but because it is a fugly bag .

Stargazing · 10/06/2008 21:37

each to their own, eh, luvvy?

pootleflump · 10/06/2008 21:40

Orla Kiely bags are not boring! I have 3 that I've had a long time and still adore - I never bore of them.

I absolutely despise 'designer' bags and honestly find 99% of them disgusting. I never really think of Orla Kiely's as being 'designer' (except the leather ones which I'm not so keen on).

Mine are all oilcloth and I don't agree about the stem print having had it's day. It depends where you live whether they're common or not.

Go for it DaDaDa, buy her a nice oilcloth one and save yourself some money, she'll love it.

PrincessPeaHead · 10/06/2008 22:41

sorry stargazing, I'm just offended by the idea of spending that much on a bag that cost about £30 to make. I agree my reaction was a little OTT

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 22:42

My eyes are offended, PPH, by that fug Marc Jacobs bag.

And I wear Mary Jane style Crocs with Jibbitz in public .

Stargazing · 10/06/2008 23:30

sigh ... your words can't wound me, expat .. I am in a blissful style bubble caused my Louboutins purchase last week .. no doubt you would hate them too, but c'est la vie, tra la la, 'tis a bitter life up north and all that jazz

Anyway, none of this snipiness is helping poor old DaDaDa, who sounds to me like a lovely husband a prize catch. Hurrah for you, fella.

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 23:30

i'll bet they are not as comfy as my Crocs, Star.

Stargazing · 10/06/2008 23:36

they're so not!!! walking ... ugh. And at the wedding I went to on Sat? the reception ...on grass? Literally rooted to the spot at one point because the heels had sunk 3 inches in!!! Ridiculous!

expatinscotland · 10/06/2008 23:40

i'd have worn something more sensible - some Clarks, for example .
