Clueless idiot seeks advice on foundation

I've never been good at make-up - I use eyeliner/mascara daily and that's about it. I'm in my early 50s and although my skin is still pretty reasonable I'd like to be able to tart myself up occasionally and would like some suggestions for a foundation that can be applied by simpletons please 😂My skin tends to be at the drier end of the spectrum so something that doesn't dry out(?) or highlight any drier bits after it's been on a while is important.

I used to use Benefit's Some Kind-a Gorgeous 'foundation faker' and found that really easy - I could apply it with a brush over the bits that needed it and it looked subtle and natural. Sadly they stopped making that years ago. Ideally I'd like something that but I don't know what might be best.

I don't really want a complicated 23-step process as, realistically, that's not for me. Please can you wise ladies come up with any suggestions?

I can recommend https://beautyandtheboutique.com/ as a way to find what suits you. She does videos on how to apply for mature skin and has different products she recommends. As far as I can tell, she’s independent and not getting a kickback from the brands she recommends.

I’ve worn makeup for many years but I needed to get out of my 1990s rut and freshen up my look. I cherry pick the advice she gives and use it in my routine. Someone on MN posted about Katie and I’ve followed ever since, just so I can look my best as I get older.

Thanks anon - I'll have a look at that site.

Wondered if anyone can recommend a similar style of foundation to the Benefit one I used to use? It was a sort of creamy foundation in a powder compact type container, and could be applied with a brush so didn't need a lot of skill(!)

Studio 10 (possibly online only) does a foundation compact but limited shades. My best advice is to get the shade exactly right - for me it then doesn’t matter so much about the formulation as it will always look good. I have a bobbi brown stick which is a great match and can be used as concealer or foundation or a bit here and there.

Have you thought about tinted moisturiser? For mature skin they are great-I use Laura Mercier oil free as I find the too dewy ones look as if I’m sweating. I have heard great things about the Chantacaille one but it is very expensive.

What about the Max Factor miracle touch?

I use Laura Geller , a creamy foundation in a powder form

I have combination skin and suffer with Seb Derm which leaves lots of redness and at time flakiness - whilst still being quite oily on the T zone - flakes around the nose and eyebrows/forehead . Red across the forehead, around the nose and across the cheeks

I wear a combination of two of her foundations , the double take which I use over the red, and then the balance and brighten - add a bit of blush, highlighter - Im done in two minutes using a dense kabuki brush

The one thing that makes this work for me - and I love it because I cant feel it on my skin - is the prep. I do need to moisturise and let that absorb, but that happens whilst Im drying my hair or getting dressed.

The double take covers the redness. The balance and brighten doesnt give much coverage but evens things out a bit. So I look brighter and better then without, but not made up - you can still see me

I find it very long lasting , it doesnt split , clump or settle on the dry areas - on me, nor sit in my lines which I was finding EL double wear was doing

I'm a bit obsessed with the Sculptedbyaimee Cream cushion foundation. It's really light and you brush it on (don't use the little puff that comes with it) bit it's really buildable for medium coverage.
