Not happy with new veneers

Devondame5 · 12/12/2025 18:34

I’m in my 50s and have had veneers for around 25 years as my natural teeth were quite awful. I was lucky that they lasted around 25 years, but a few had been breaking over the last few years so it was time to replace them. I had temporaries fitted and loved the shape/colour. Met with lab tech on my dentist’s suggestion and he said the final veneers are often brighter than the temps. This worried me as the temps were as light as I wanted to go and I didn’t want them to look fake. So I decided to go for a shade down. When the finals were placed on my teeth before bonding I could see they looked slighter darker but put it down to lack of natural light in the dentists room and they were cemented on. I’ve had them a week now and think they look slightly yellow and are darker than my previous ones 🤦‍♀️ I don’t hate them but don’t love them either. I’m hoping these ones will last 20 odd years and obviously theyre expensive so want them to be right. I have a review appointment with my dentist next week to see how I’m getting on. Wondering whether to bring this up, I know he won’t be happy at the thought of a possible refit but I relied on the technician’s advice and now wish I hadn’t. Also one side is quite painful when biting down and flossing is painful, which I obviously will mention. Just don’t know what to do and whether I want to go through it again even if they did agree to redo them 😬

I think they look yellowish 😬

No they look pearly. I love them.

feliciabirthgiver · 12/12/2025 21:37

The perfect colour not at all yellow and they will age much better that the temporary ones.

@Devondame5

I think the celebrity turkey-teeth look like dentures and skew our perception of what teeth are actually meant to look like.

Do you want people to think you have beautiful natural teeth or do you want them to be dazzled by their brightness?

It's like a perfectly beautiful woman can be called 'the fat one' in a girl band, because the others are so, so slender.

Personally I wouldn't want people being transfixed by my teeth and unable to look anywhere else. Same goes for my boobs, my nails, my eyelashes and anything else I could get overhauled if I wanted to.

You have actually said what i was thinking. If we all looked the same with teeth, boobs, bums and botox then im sure it would get boring. What happened to being natural? Wasn't Marilyn monroe a natural beautiful size 16?

minipie · 12/12/2025 22:23

They look more natural than the temporary ones IMO. They look like teeth. The temporary ones look like veneers.

Ihatemondays1962 · 12/12/2025 22:45

I prefer the permanent ones to the temporary ones.

Daytimenighttime · 12/12/2025 22:49

I think they look really nice and 100% better than turkey teeth.
But I do think they are not what I call " natural" because i don't think many peoples teeth are naturally as even, certainly not as a person gets older.

Neveranynamesleft · 12/12/2025 22:51

Absolutely fine. The over white teeth that are popular these days look ridiculous.

ultracynic · 12/12/2025 22:55

Devondame5 · 12/12/2025 19:37

We did agree a shade but the tech then told me they’d be brighter than the temps so based on that I dropped down a shade

Are these pics both of the final veneers or a before and after?

Exceptionalice · 12/12/2025 23:01

Devondame5 · 12/12/2025 21:24

These were the temps which were a shade lighter which I loved but didn’t want them any whiter

These look too ‘solid’ in colour. Natural teeth have some transparency to the ‘enamel’ , especially near the biting edge, then you’re see a slightly ‘yellowed’ centre to mimic dentine. Which is exactly what you’re seeing on your permanent veneers, and probably why the change from the temps can feel a bit like you might be disappointed. You essentially go from solid, faker looking teeth to very natural.. they look so nice! Any whiter or solid they wouldn’t look like your teeth, they’d look like dentures or turkey teeth.

JanetareyouokareyouokJanet · 12/12/2025 23:09

I think they look great. But it’s a big investment so make sure you bring it up that you felt the advise given may have made you pick the wrong shade.

Both pics are of final veneers

My dentist thought I should have gone for the lighter shade and was a bit surprised that I’d changed my mind. He said it’s the most popular shade for veneers - the lightest shade in the ‘natural’ shade chart.

The temporaries are made from a different material and don’t have the natural translucency that the final porcelain ones would have.

I think they look great, better than your temporary ones that imo looked too white to be real.
But its a personal choice and its clearly a change so it may take a while to get used to.
Im not keen on the dazzling white teeth look.
From the photo you posted they dont look yellow at all and i think are at the upper limit of "natural" white, especially for your age.
Im similar age and my 100% natural teeth are defintely yellowing ....
But if you arent happy then its worth mentioning. Can veneers be recoloured?/whitened??
Can you ask a partner, friend or better still a teenage daughter (!) for their honest opinion?
But Iagree with PP here from the photo younposted they look great.
If your dentist commented its probably because they are more used to doing those really bright white obviously fake teeth

CandyCaneKisses · 12/12/2025 23:48

You should speak up if you aren’t happy. You have to live with them so best to mention it

They really don't!

That’s my point and why your veneers look so nice ☺️

ClaireEclair · 13/12/2025 07:39

They look great! I don’t think they would make yellowish veneers would they?

Devondame5 · 13/12/2025 13:15

Thanks for your comments, I appreciate them. Will have a chat with the dentist on Monday, but I’m inclined to leave them as they are or at least live with them for a while and see how I feel in a few months. It doesn’t seem worth going through all that again just to have them half a shade lighter.

I think most people do go whiter. No veneers can’t be lightened at all once cemented. Friends, hubby, children all think they’re fine … tho I do think some of them would tell me what they think I want to hear!

SirChenjins · 13/12/2025 13:22

They don't look yellow at all - they look very natural, like you've got really nice natural teeth. The temps are quite white so I can understand why you didn't want to go whiter. Do you think it might be that you were used to the whiteness of tge temp ones you're just taking a while to adjust to the more natural white of your new ones? Also - do you wear lipstick? If so, could the shade be clashing with your new ones?

MiniCoopers · 13/12/2025 21:51

This obsession with bright white teeth really is difficult because my teeth are 52 years old. They aren’t that bad but they are a bit discoloured: until all the bright white teeth came out I was ok, now I feel awful about them 😮

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 13/12/2025 21:57

Have a chat bit these are not yellow (and look great)

I'd be inclined to live with them for a few months.

viques · 16/12/2025 23:26

I saw a photo of Dick van Dyke celebrating his 100 th birthday, he looks great, apart from the awful “perfect” teeth he has been given, which look as though he has mugged a thirty year old and taken their teeth! Natural looking teeth over picture perfect gnashers every time.

sesquipedalian · 16/12/2025 23:31

OP, I think your teeth look great, and you really don’t want bright white veneers that just look totally false. I think you’re better off with a fractionally darker shade - and it is only fractionally darker. Enjoy your new veneers - nothing not to like about them.
