Sick of my hair, anyone else?

It’s medium thickness. Naturally mousey with a reddish undertone, so although I’ve had blonde highlights since I was 16 they go brassy quite quickly. Hair is straight at the top with a slight wave at the bottom and kinky underneath, so the drying highlights make it quite frizzy and puffy at the bottom. The roots get greasy very quickly. My hairline isn’t neat and has a couple of what I can only describe as ‘gaps’, with fluffy bits at the temples. If I wear it up, letting it down means a huge kink that takes until the next day to go.

It’s a nightmare, ponytails look like shit as there’s not much weight to it and the ends are so puffy. Not enough hair to do a nice messy bun without looking like Miss Trunchbull. Hate it down as it has no real shape, hairdressers seem reluctant to do anything but cut straight across with fine layers that you can’t see.

Right now I was it every 2 days, add some heat defence cream blow dry but it just never looks good. I use OBX collagen and keratin shampoo and conditioner.

Anyone else with this hair type and some kind of magic trick please?

My hair is similar. It’s grown really long and has no shape. If I have shape cut in it’s only nice fresh from the salon, I can’t recreate it at home. I have bought so many products thinking each new one will be a miracle!
Has to be blow dried and straightened every time I wash or it’s just hideous. I’m considering ditching the highlights and going back to my natural brown. Might be less dry and straw like. Sorry I’m zero help but i know how you feel. I’d love to have great hair.

HoneyParsnipSoup · 10/12/2025 21:19

Same here - looks nice at the salon, totally different by the time I get home. I’ve actually started growing it out as I figured even if the colour is dull, at least it’ll be silky and I think less frizzy with no roots, the re growth is about 15cm now so I’m halfway there.

I feel like I need a master hairdresser who isn’t afraid to properly cut into it and use a colour that tones with the red shine, but every time I get the same boring cut and yellow highlights. Argh!

My hairdresser is a friend and I don’t know how to ditch her. Nicely. Shes so old school. Yellow highlights. 🫣

My hair is similar in some ways...I do have highlights and it makes it knot and tangle underneath
I find a good oil works wonders
I am out to wet hair after washing... But also every night before I go to sleep I brush the under layers and add a teeny bit of oil

RegularNameSwitcher · 10/12/2025 21:29

Ugh, I had exactly the same thing! I got sick of constantly experimenting with products to deal with brassy tones and dry frizz and grew my hair out. It took me a year and a half and I nearly cracked and went back to colour, but I finally chopped off the last of my highlighted hair last week!
The colour is a bit boring, but my hair looks healthy, thick and shiny, and it dries beautifully with no effort. So glad to be free of the highlights, it’s made my hair look dreadful for years!

I think I have the solution to this: a chouchou. My hair is very thin. I have always had extensions but decided to give them up for a while and embrace French Girl Chic. I have bought a chouchou from here and am expecting it to arrive tomorrow.

£35 for a scrunchie?!

You’re alright thanks

livelovelough24 · 10/12/2025 22:06

I have similar problem and have been thinking to get a pixie cut. I had it when I was younger and loved it, not sure why I am hesitating now, but that is my only option.

There’s no way on earth that can be a legit website! Have you seen the photographs?

The weird clothing? Little girl in boots etc?

Boobyslims · 12/12/2025 08:11

Sick of my hair too and know a really good hairdresser could do something, but living out in the sticks where the hairdresser told me she “doesn’t like layers”. I get a trim that literally goes round the end like I do to my daughter.

I’ve medium length hair and am growing in my grey - two sections at the front, the rest is still brown.

but I’m multi tone due to hairdresser putting in semis to mask grey for thr last couple of years. My brown hair is brassy and blonde now. My regrowth is rich brown and grey. It’s a state. And it’s too long. I feel so messy and untidy and I get those fuzzy patches in the corners of forehead! Also can’t make a pony tail look smart!!! Was lamenting this only yesterday! On Teams calls I look really messy, worse than in reality. If I tied hair back very smoothly, I look bald. Something to do with the shape of my head. I look two dimensional.

I plan a trip into the city back to my old hairdressser for a decent review and chop of whatever the hell she recommends.

Yes. Very odd.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 12/12/2025 08:17

OK looks like I’m wrong, it does seem a legit site. I was suspicious because of the pricing, then the odd photo.

SpicyMargarita1 · 12/12/2025 10:52

They’re French, lol.

I've had to recently find a new hairdresser (mine has been unable to work for some months), and yesterday saw someone who dismissed my quest for a trim and suggested a restyle. I love it. My hair is different texture to yours, so no point telling you what he did, but I was so impressed. He also showed me how to replicate the style at home, ways of changing it up, and when I suggested a trim in 6-8 weks, he told me not to be silly - it'll last at least 10 weeks. On the basis of this, I'd recommend going to a Creative Director and paying the extra for some experience and insight.

If you're in or near London I can give you a recommendation. My hairdresser is amazing and he's been cutting my hair for over 20 years!

You’re so right. This is what I’m going to do over the Xmas hols. It’s definitely worth it. Glad you got sorted!

Hi OP, thought I'd put my two pence in as I'm currently on my own hair journey! My hair type sounds fairly similar to yours but mines very thick!

After years and years of bleaching mine became so damaged and frizzy, like many have said I never felt happy with hairdressing results so I gave up. Tried all the hair masks and oils but nothing could tame it, I decided to give up on the bleach and go back natural. Used a standard box dye to match my roots and committed myself to growing it all out and researched the hell out of my hair type and how to work it.

Like yours it was wavy in some places and had kinks in others, after reading up I learnt that I actually had pretty wavy hair but all the chemicals damage the waves and make it frizz! I changed my shampoo and conditioner after learning that the sulphates and silicones actually strip all the natural oils from the hair causing the frizz, now I only use sulphate free with natural ingredients. I've stopped towel drying my hair as again, it increases the frizz, just ring it out and pop it up in a towel and then let it dry without any heat. Then don't touch the hair until it's completely dry (unless I add mouse to enhance waves) and honestly now I love my natural hair! Removing sulphates means it gets worse before it gets better as your hair and scalp adapts to it but it's worth the wait!!

Also to add, I haven't been to a hairdresser since so the process was cost free! Hope this helps!
